Great SciFi fan but this movie somehow just didn't deliver. The story just didn't capture me and there where a lot of plotholes and inconsistencies. Also the movie didn't age very well
One of the very best SciFi movies I've seen, and despite being 17 years old it does not look dated.
This great piece of Sci-fi movies shows us a society engulfed in the power of genetics, Everything you do must have an absolute perfection to it. This movie show that the way society achieves this bij geneticaly enhancing its members, Children born without genetic enhancements are excluded from the higher achieving ashalons of society, one of these children "Vincent Freeman",played by (ethan Hawke), however takes it to another level when he decides by taking the identity of Jerome Morow (Jude Law), a genetic altered human who rents out his identity because he has fallen from grace by a personal tragidy (accident), he suffered. Vincent is hell bent on trying to cheat the system and show its flaws. By becoming a pilot for the saturnus mission. Cheating the system however isn't as easy as it seems, The film explores humanity and its many inperfections and in Essence what it means to be human.
The movie was nominated for an Hugo award, personaly i think its realy oscar material. The great acting of (law, Hawke, Uma Thurman). makes for some enjoyable viewing, with of course some smaller roles for "old school" actors like (Ernest Borgnine, Gore Vidal,
Although The Movie did receive positive reviews it wasnt a box office succes, it also sparked some discussion of genetics and discrimination in the common day world. The film however manages to achieve cult status amongs sci-fi viewers. and is an absolute must see for Sci-fi Fans
The concept was great. It just seemed really cliche. The romance was pointless. We all knew how it was going to end. The blood draws were so frequent it was almost comical. The rivalry between him and his brother? What was that? Jude Law made the movie though; he was the best part.
20 years later and I really enjoyed it! The best movie I saw in this weak Summer! Great performances from Ethan Hawke and Jude Law. Totally recommend it.
one of the best sci fi movie...even after 23 years it doesn't look old and story is very interesting :sign_horns:
So, I assume Vincent meets Thanos in the sequel, right?
I feel this is a movie i am going to keep on coming back to for years to come. Ethan Hawke is fantastic in this film and though at small moments it feels like the story is standing still it then picks up just as quick. Listen to the recommendations it constantly gets and watch.
This was a pretty entertaining watch. I kinda disagree with some of the world logic. But the premise was interesting and the acting was pretty good all around, although Uma Thurman is a little lackluster.
The middle seems to get a little boring. While I was watching, I couldn't put my finger on it. But in this sci-fi world, the story kinda just turns into a murder mystery. Which is what would happen in the modern world. Suddenly all the social commentary is gone and the sci-fi elements become superfluous.
Minimalist sci-fi with great attention to details. The story is not too complex or out-there, but the acting makes it great. Would've liked a better ending for Irene.
One of the best movies I've seen recently, the philosophy behind the movie is very thought provoking and shows any discrimination upon presumption is toxic, absolutely recommended
This was such a relevant science fiction film that imagines a world which very well could be in the not to distant future with the human genome project and examines the ethics of such enterprises.
The characters are so likable and relatable. There are even some twists in there as well which was very enjoyable. Even some subordinate characters have really interesting things about them.
The story is very good however perhaps a couple of extra scenes could have been helpful for certain aspects of it however it was brilliant at addressing the ethical issues in question.
Overall I thought it was a great example of a film that aims to address challenges of the modern era.
Great work of sci-fi, lacks a bit of an original plottwist or story development. But maybe I am too harsh on it since it is already over 15 years old. It does show a very realistic image of a genetically enginered future, with discrimination in a new form. The hero needs to beat the odds.
Wow, must watch! Concept, details, ambience and all the things... It was a great sci-fi movie!
In the near future, humanity has mastered his own genetic code. So thorough is this knowledge, in fact, that the majority of modern conceptions are performed in a petri dish, on an embryo with the lowest number of negative hereditary traits. Against the backdrop of this fanatically eugenic-conscious future, discrimination has reached new levels, as jobs and relationships are won and lost with a simple blood sample and naturally conceived children are second-class citizens.
It seems like there's always a persistent, rebellious figure when confronted with such an oppressive system, and in Gattaca's case that role is filled by Ethan Hawke as the physically modest, daydreaming genius Vincent. The bevy of hoops Hawke jumps through to maintain the illusion that he's a top-tier genetic example make up most of the film's substance, with an ongoing murder investigation pressing the matter in a few hairy new directions. Somewhere along the way Vincent stumbles into a hollow, affection-free relationship with Uma Thurman that seems to spawn more from boredom than passion.
Quite slow and methodical in nature, it's still a bright rumination on a future that already seems within grasp. Could have used a more flavorful tone, and the cast is almost universally glazed-over and dry.
In a world dictated by genetics, the human being is still him.
Cinema Paco 2. Figure 4, tone 4. The first time I saw I liked, have liked more now. Very good of all
Not much of a sci-fi fan, but we watched this in school and I really enjoyed it! It was, for me, a very realistic portrayal of what could happen and also quite touching. Some of my friends even shed a tear or two! Definitely a movie to watch!
I'm not sure of the day I saw it but I really enjoyed the movie. The social dynamics of the world, how one man defies destiny and his place on a society by becoming something larger than expected. It's a nice movie on how dreams have such a strength that leads one to beat the odds and defy what is expected of him.
One of the great sci-fi movies of all time. An interesting glimpse at what could happen in the near future.
Must see
Enjoyable Sci fi, with great cast. Even though over 25 years old, it still looks great and has aged well. In my view, it's not an absolute classic but an enjoyable watch.
First time I have watched this movie since high school and I was surprised how well it holds up. Is it the greatest sci-fi film ever? Not necessarily, but it is damn solid and is one that is easy to recommend.
Rating: 3.5/5 - 80% - Would Recommend
The music and soundtrack is just beautiful. The almost sterile and futuristic appearance works really to keep it almost timeless.
The story is very believable and easy to follow. I wasnt bored throughout the movie and sometimes even on the edge. Very good and recommended!
Underrated masterpiece with a beautiful soundtrack and stunning cinematography.
[spoiler] I'm not too keen with this movie, to be fair I expected a little more going on. Like I get it that it's a story about him trying to go to titan when he is not genetically perfect, but I'd say if you are looking for a movie more like Interstellar or even Contact I'd avoid it. Unless you are here mainly for the story. All in all story is great, but very little action for my liking. [spoiler]
Rated a Connor 0, normal 6.4
I remembered this movie better than it is. It sets up a fascinating world with nearly endless possibilities for political and social commentary, and drops that all in favor of an extremely sloggy story of one man. This would be amazing material for a modern remake with a good director.
Ethan Hawke & Jude Law have such great chemistry, and rest of the movie is good too, which makes for an excellent watch!
watchin it right now on cctv6

Aims big. Works for a while but becomes boring, really boring, and the sci-Fi elements never really develop beyond mentioning DNA. Add social implications and you have a movie that is pure Oscar bait in Sci-Fi clothes. It dulled the imagination for me.
