I went to see an action thriller. What i ended up with in the end was a lame hallmark movie
If you’re just interested in well choreographed and edited action sequences: see it. Also, kudos to convicingly pulling off the Will Smith clone (minus his final scene), something which must’ve been extremely hard to do given that he’s constantly moving around during the action sequences. However, the story of this film feels very paint-by-numbers and uses way too much exposition on top of that. The set-up takes a lot from The Bourne Identity, minus the memory loss. That’s not inherently a bad thing, but this has none of the interesting characterization, pace or grit from a Bourne film on top of that. Stylistically, there’s a glossiness and fakeness to it all. Everything is overlit, it ocassonially looks like characters are standing in front of green screen (which I’m pretty sure they aren’t), and there’s a fluidity to the movement during the action scenes which makes it look like animation. I don’t know how much of that is a result of the special cameras they used, and how much comes from bad CGI/cinematography/lighting, but I do know that not all of the innovation here is also an improvement.

This felt and looked like a video game thanks to the higher frame rate, a few first person perspective shots, the action set pieces and sometimes bad CGI. The young Will Smith looked alright for the most part but some of the other CGI didn't look great. His performance is fine but Mary Elizabeth Winstead's character is pointless. The story is dull and predictable, the action is ok but at least it looks pretty.

I found this movie to be very underwhelming and uninspired. The interactions between the 2 Will's should have been more interesting and I think they missed an opportunity here. In fact there was too much action and not enough interaction between the 2 Will's. Also, I don't think we're quite there yet to have an entire CGI, de-aged character to be a main player. De-aging a character for a few scenes is one thing but not for an entire movie.
What a bad movie. It's a copy-and-paste sci-fi action movie. The 3D HFR experience isn't worth it either. I don't know if it was the cinema, me or the editor of this film. But the 3D was terrible and wasn't complimented by the high frame rate.
The story is trash. I can't believe this got made. The only praise I can give it is that it's underlining message is fine and the CGI on young Will Smith is incredible (except in daylight). But it's one we have seen everywhere and this cloning aspect was a bit fascinating at first. But they handled it awfully. One scene I thought was going to be great, it was set up ok and the tension was built from Will Smith's monologue earlier. Even though the script is terrible. However, this scene was too short and all that holds it together is the script. Again, it's bad, so the scene dangles on a thread when it could have been a lovely character piece. The action is eh, and unintentionally funny at times (that damn motorbike). Maybe I'm being too harsh on the action here because of the horrible configuration of the 3D I was subjected to. But even afterwards, I feel like it was too cutty.
I am baffled at how bad this turned out to be. This is so far, the worst movie of the year I've seen.

Gemini Man is a visually stunning movie. It was shot beautifully in 4k at 120 frames per second. The CG used to create the "fresh prince" Will Smith looks great, in dim to dark lit scenes. The tech used here rivals Marvels' own "de-aging" effects and maybe a bit better in close-up scenarios. For me, that's where the good things end. Bad dialogue, poor pacing, hit or miss CG and a cliche plot (you probably have seen this type plot many times before in the late 90s or early 2000s movies) makes this a not recommend for me. I would wait till it hits Netflix.

SO SMOOOOTH!
The frames are so smooth at 60fps. The film is good for casual watching. It has a touch of humanity and sentimentality. The POV angles when the character shoots are immersive indeed. Also, the small details like bullet reload and gun dismantles are pleasing to watch. HDR adds much more flavour! HDR & 60fps are like bread and butter, it should be the future, we need more movies like this!

The hand to hand combat was so weird it was like to slender men hitting each other. It was weird.. But the movie was OK to watch. Thanks Netflix.

A decent action film with great acting, good chemistry and a fair sense of humor among Will and Mary-Elizabeth. There are a couple of scenes where the action seems fake, more like a video game, especially when viewed in 3D. But overall one of the most enjoyable action films I've seen this year.

After having a good participation in the live action of Aladdin, Will Smith is still stubborn in making trash movies. It's… OK. For a shmup, at least. The "Will Smith vs. Will Smith" VFX are mostly good, at least.
Some egregiously bad CGI in this one, mostly in the form of unrealistic physics.
Will Smith is fantastic and so are the special effects but the story is bad and I just didn't like the film.
Its not a total waste of time - the action is pretty good, the special effects are okay - but the story is (ironically) a clone of other, better films. A disappointment from a great director.
I don't know, as far as action movies go this isn't so bad. Sure, it checks all the boxes and the plot is not the most interesting part. At least it has one (hello Mr. Bay). Is it realistic ? Of course not. But there are hardly any action movies today that are. At least it isn't Michael Bay-ish (sorry for again pulling the reference).
I wonder why they didn't use Jaden for the role of the clone. Seams so obvious to me. In any case, I am concerned about that de-aging technique because it opens up avenues I am not sure I want to see.
Disappointing movie. Younger Will Smith looks really unnatural for most of the film. All the fight scenes between Will Smith and his younger self look awful, the fights are really sped up (almost like someone hit x2 playback speed) and when the two Smiths interact with each other it looks outright terrible.
I was genuinely excited to watch an action movie with Will Smith, staring Will Smith too. I loved his main character and you feel that Will Smith has aged in a movie for once, but still a bad ass which I liked. I liked how it played out and they honestly got the younger Will Smith looking like a serious Fresh Prince Of Bel Air. And Clive Owens plays a great bad guy, he has that look to him which fits the bill. If you like Will Smith you will enjoy the movie, and it has some pretty bad ass action scenes, the story could have been a bit better but overall I liked and enjoyed it.

It's certainly not the best plot ever. That said, it was a greatly entertaining experience due to the number and quality of the action sequences. They're well edited, and well choreographed. It felt like a great Terminator-style action movie from the '80s/'90s bu shot with more modern technology.
From a technical perspective, the movie is outstanding and shows off the benefits of shooting a movie at a framerate higher than 23.976 fps very well. The 3D was solid too, and certainly a welcome experience (as it is for every movie that gets a 3D release), but the 3D ended up taking a backseat to the real draw of the higher framerate.
120 FPS was a great choice particularly for an action movie like this one and I'm happy to see someone in Hollywood willing to be innovative instead of just doing things for the sake of "that's how it's always been done."
From the opening train sequence to flying scenes or scenes that take place in water, it really gives everything an increased sense of speed that looks more close to how these activities would go down in real life. During the action sequences I felt like I was watching a fight taking place right in front of me instead of watching a fight that was recorded on a camera. There was a certain added level of engagement that I normally only feel when playing a modern video game. I think this high framerate technology is going to be a game changer, especially for action movies, if we can just get some of these old fogeys in Hollywood to start dying off and pass the torch on to younger directors who have grown up consuming higher framerate media.
You're certainly going to have the typical peanut gallery of boomers who grew up watching exclusively 23.976 films who have been brainwashed into thinking that a framerate considerably slower than the human eye can process is somehow more "realistic," but hopefully as we see more high framerate movies it will eventually be an adopted video improvement standard like color, widescreen, higher resolutions, surround sound, and HDR. As those older generations kick the bucket you will see less and less opposition to more realistic higher framerates in movies and eventually the majority of the population will think that slideshow framerate 23.976 movies are the ones that look "weird."
The inevitable 4K Blu-ray release with a framerate of 60 FPS is going to be the way to go for this movie, until we get some future format that can deliver the full 4K 3D 120 FPS. If you can see it in a cinema that can play it at 120 FPS, I highly recommend it, but even 60 FPS should be a considerable improvement over your typical movie's framerate.
The films advertising is all about cloning and there being a CGI young Will Smith. Half of the film though is Henry Brogen (Will Smith), an aging Hitman. Hunted by his former bosses when a colleague gives him dangerous information.
His only ally is Danny (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who was hired to spy on him. Who becomes a target along with him.
The film is mostly like Bourne in the beginning. However, since Clay Verris (Clive Owens) thinks no one can stop Brogen but someone just as skilled. He sends a younger clone after him, of course.
The charms of Will Smith and Mary Elizabeth Winstead help make Gemini Man more interesting than it has a right to be. Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) as director does also help the film be better than it deserves.
They should fire those who did the CGI on the younger version of Will Smith, that really looked terrible :joy:
As an HFR enjoyer, this was wonderful to watch in 4K60. There is a clarity that comes with high frame rate that I find captivating compared to standard. Maybe it's the novelty, but it's a shame that the format hasn't found a niche outside of this, Avatar and the Hobbit movies. The action sequences are so fluid and fun to watch, especially during the Wickian finale, that I'm (almost) able to forgive it's awful script work and paper thin plot to see a truck explode at a silky smooth 60 frames per second.
A mediocre action film; all aspects staying roughly in the middle of the good-to-bad spectrum - nothing particularly groundbreaking nor unique.
But, nonetheless, it was still enjoyable. Even if I don’t think it has any rewatch value.
Gemini Man is a good movie that delivers some memorable action scenes. The movie features a great performance by Will Smith, who plays both the older and younger versions of the protagonist. The special effects used to create the younger version of Will Smith are impressive, and the action scenes are well choreographed and entertaining. While the plot may not be groundbreaking, it's still an enjoyable movie that's worth a watch.

It could have been really good if they just made it a bit more realistic. There was so much unnecessary CGI. The motorcycle scene was ridiculously horrible.
Really enjoyed this - found myself rooting for the heroes. Amazing fights, especially the dark scenes in 3D. Might re-watch it some years later on 4k high frame rate. Shame there's no 3D high frame rate format for home.

Overall, this film is much better than I was expecting. The talent and chemistry of the cast is a major plus, with Smith's charm and abilities on full display and Winstead doing a fine job of channeling SIgourney Weaver at her badass best at times. Plotwise, the first two acts are as solid as they are derivative. The third act, however, comes with a whole lot of stupidity, but it's all saved in the end by an acceptable (if derivative once again) finale. So, really, the film's biggest sin lies in the lack of originality, but how much originality is Hollywood pumping out ANYWHERE these days?

Well worth a watch.
An interesting experiment, having one actor play two versions of themselves, but the CGI wasn't perfect. There were times it cracked. I was particularly distracted by the artificial movement of Junior's mouth. As an action movie, it had some really butt kicking sequences. Personally, I think it would have benefited by more women in the cast, although, Mary Elizabeth Winstead covered a lot of bases (combatant, friend, alternate viewpoint, and, eventually, parent). Will Smith carried a heavy load playing both parts, and I don't think the failures in the movie were due to his acting. The whole movie just felt a little off kilter. The story lacked depth or nuance. I give the film a 6 (fair) out of 10. [SciFi Action Adventure]
Average action movie that for some reason is lacking in VFX while it is supposed to excel in that.
Not only the CGI is wonky, even lightning and coloration is simply terrible at points. Best example is the 'night' scene at the harbour, which is filmed on a way too bright day. I never saw moonlight bounce of surfaces (forehead, hair, boats, water surface) that brightly! xD I have no problem with darkening a day shot scene itself, it has been done for decades in various ways and degrees of success (although it can make a movie feel a bit dated) but this was clearly a case of thinking ANYTHING can be done in post, which is simply not true. Although this movie wanted to show how advanced CGI/VFX has become, it became more proof in what way it still fails (regardless of the reason why.)
Most action scenes itself are enjoyable though, with a highlight being the motor chase scene. Even a prolonged wrestling fight/hand to hand fight and an underwater fight don't feel too confusing, which is worth a compliment. Fast paced, without jumping all over the place, and dares and succeeds to use some longer than average shots in the middle of dense action giving a proper situational awareness to the viewer.
The story is not great, but also not terribly weak. Better than the average action movie for sure, but it won't win a price for storytelling anytime soon. The focus is obviously put more toward the action, and that is fine.
This is also noticeable in the dialogues. which are never memorable but also not become too crazy. Although it can get a bit flat or cringy sometimes. Especially in moments when the acting is also failing. In general it is, again, not terrible, but it lacks passion and in some cases can be lackluster, while in other cases it can be called over the top.
Overall enjoyable movie, and to me it did not feel like a waste of time. But also I would not recommend it quickly, and a good chance it will be forgotten in a few years time.

It was ok. Nothing special story-wise, but some nice action scenes. In some movie theaters the movie is running 120FPS. Maybe nice to see it as an experiment on how 120FPS movies will look like, but also ok if you want to watch something and nothing is on TV.
I wish the sci-fi element had been a little stronger. But it was a quite decent action film!
Problem with Chinese funded movies:
Everyone knows Ang Lee can't do action movies. His wonders just doesn't work on these materials, it's like asking Clint Eastwood to do a musical. It's just not working.
But the Chinese don't give a damn. They just want someone Chinese to take the helm, even if it means to crash the whole thing into a fat wall.
The plot itself felt quite fresh actually, given it was written 20 years ago it's hard to say who's ripping who off. But I was expecting them to give me an acceptable solution to the dilemma of whether Junior should execute his ill-visioned adopted father, but the final result had me cringing, and as i walked out the theatre I saw a father trying to explain the last act to his son. I pray the kid got it right.
And one thing worth noting though, is the action choreography by martial artist Jeremy Marinas and some other guys. the team surely got a style and i absolutely love it.
The CGI for young Will Smith is incredible, and completely convincing, and there is good action. However, those are about the only positives I'll give it.
The High Frame Rate presentation absolutely ruined the cinematic look of the film, making it have the look and feel of an amateur youtube video. It's not just familiarity with frame rates. I'm very familiar with all frame rates. There are simply qualities inherent to different frame rates that affect the feeling of tone, impact and scale that result in everything feeling low quality, losing any sense of "epic" or "larger than life" that lower frame rates inherently enhance.
Beyond the HFR issue, the story is just weak. It's a barebones cliched story that seems to only exist as a vehicle to show off the CGI effects and action.
I went into this expecting some epic, memorable moment for cinema this year, and I came away very disappointed.
Will Smith's career is in a funk. This movie won't help that.
It's slow, predictable, tries to be clever or take itself more seriously than it should. For an action movie it makes the cardinal sin - it uses CGI in a way that looks unbelievable. Here it falls into 'elasticity'. So chases and fight scenes are now surreal and break the laws of physics way too much.
The script is very wooden and flat.
The technology is excellent to allow this to work but the showcase here is very underwhelming.
6/10 for the tech and some of the action.

The young actor still looks 40, the battle makeup is terrible, the acting is absolutely forced, the storyline is trash they have the worst aim of all time, it’s just extremely stupid... gun battles in public and no one screams or acts like anything is even happening, fight scenes seem to drop frames and look extremely unnatural... just plain cringe all around. When they do hit shots it might as well be bots like no one who gets shot screams or anything just soooooooo fake and cringe
