Ginger Snaps 2000

Fun and twisted coming of age horror. It got even better on my second viewing. Werewolf horror films aren't my favorite and I blame Twilight for that, but this one perfectly encapsulates the nightmare of teenage girlhood told in a metaphorical way. The leads are lovable. Two contrasting personalities but has such unique chemistry. The vibe is so early 00s with goth aesthetic. Add in solid humor and decent gore effects. It's similar to Jennifer's Body but a lot better. Sam was smoking hot!

A solid, well acted coming of age (in more ways than one) flick. Although definitely full to the brim with early 2000s teen angst and radio metal, its quite fun.

Practical and gore effects are well done except in close ups where it's pretty rough around the edges.

A cult horror film, Ginger Snaps attempts to put a unique spin on the werewolf genre but has some tonal problems. Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle star as two sisters whose bond is tested when one of them is attacked by a werewolf and begins to transform. Unfortunately, the writing is uneven and tries to insert some horror-comedy and satire that doesn’t quite work. Part of the problem is the performances, which are pretty lifeless. Additionally, the wolf effects are rather bad; though some of the transformation makeup work is quite creative. Yet while Ginger Snaps does some interesting things, in the end it doesn’t quite succeed.

Dripping with angst from the early 00's grunge phase, Ginger Snaps is a metaphor-clad werewolf flick with more to say than its teen horror exterior would have you believe. If you can look past some of the eye-rollingly edgy dialogue and teen setting, Ginger Snaps is a fun ride with some depth to its underlying message. I just don't think it'll be a mainstay in my horror movie rotation.
