The problem with coming to a popular film like this later on is that hype gets in the way. With no awareness of the brand or comic, yet having been told numerous times how great this is, it is difficult to approach this in the right manner to review. There is no doubt that it is a lot of fun and a large part of this is down to Pratt who nails the lead, Quinn. Its bright and colourful (a welcome change to the lived in feel of many other sci-fantasy films) and confident in it's execution. Yet equally it is part of a Marvel formula that started to wear thin after the first Avengers movie - for all the talk of how different this film was to the usual Marvel film, it's only real surprise is just how tied to the Marvel template the film is - everyone trying to get hold of a MacGuffin of unspeakable power, culminating in a large scale battle and fight scenes that unfortunately lead to very little of consequence, with all our heroes surviving to fight another day and a tease as to where this is all leading to. Admittedly, the fun here is in the different characters they have created. But If Marvel are serious about creating a cinematic universe where all these stories are interconnected then at some point they are going to have to take a risk in the storytelling - this isn't it!
A really great movie with awesome soundtracks
hilarious and amazing
one of my favourite films
[7.8/10] So much of Guardians of the Galaxy’s narrative is standard. This isn’t the first, and it won’t be the last film to feature a collection of rogues and nobodies reluctantly coming together to save the world. The tale of the dissolute young man who eventually learns to fight for something bigger than himself is a well-worn one, and a motley crew of suspicious characters slowly becoming a family is a cliché. In other words, when Guardians was released in 2014, it didn’t exactly reinvent the wheel.
And yet, it is a film full of such charm, such character, such inventiveness in ways beyond its story, that it becomes incredibly easy for give it for the ways in which it proceeds through the usual blockbuster story progression. The audience will put up with, and even enjoy, all the hoary tropes in the world if you can world and a cast of characters they want to spend more time with.
It also comes from a sense that director/co-writer James Gunn is content to make a film that doesn’t take itself, or these galaxy-spanning adventures, too seriously. That begins with movie’s much-ballyhooed soundtrack. While Guardians still employs much of the usual orchestral swell of the studio tentpole film, it scores much of the adventure to the dulcet tones of the sixties and seventies. Gunn and composer Tyler Bates flip nicely between the piped in tones of those classic greatest hits and the diegetic music emanating from Peter Quill’s holy artifact walkman.
Scoring scenes to the likes of “Come and Get Your Love” or the trailerrific sounds of “Hooked on a Feeling” serves two purposes. For one, it immediately gives Guardians a sonic identity distinct from its fellow Marvel brethren, and it’s an appropriately goofy one. A grim, intergalactic prison suggest ominous chords and haunting musical stings. Instead, Gunn deploys “The Piña Colada Song,” and it’s immediately clear that he’s more interested in riffing on the beats of the reluctant rogue-turned-hero story than playing it straight.
But it also roots Star-Lord’s attitude to a particular time and place, one tied to his lingering pain and connection to his mother. The film underlines it a little heavily in places, but there’s still a nice subtext that part of Peter Quill’s adolescent bent stems from the fact that he lost someone very close to him, and had his world turned upside down, at a very young age. There are notions of arrested development, of a veneration of a particular time in his life when things were normal and happy, that manifests in the form his prized piece of eighties paraphernalia in the midst of advanced alien technology, and the music that comes out of it.
That also syncs up with the film’s other big theme -- family. Hitting those thematic notes is where the film is at its most heavy-handed, with images of Peter’s dying mother spliced with those of the outstretched arms of his new comrades, followed by an appearance from his surrogate dad. Still, the film does a nice job of giving each of its titular Guardians a hole in their lives where family is supposed to go, that makes them each resistant but ultimately welcoming of the kinship that develops.
In addition to Peter’s complicated parental issues, there’s Gamora, whose horrific adopted father (Thanos, naturally), killed her real parents and taught her nothing but brutality and rivalry. There’s the very literal Drax who lost his wife and daughter to Ronin and has vowed to avenge them. And then there’s Rocket and Groot, a pair of science experiments who, for Rocket at least, carry the traumas of having had a creator tear them apart and stitch them back together. Each is understably adrift in their own way by the time their paths cross.
Guardians dutifully moves through the usual story beats about these misfits coming together and creating a found family. It provides plausible enough reasons why this normally self-interested pack of rogues would join forces, with each individual’s goal requiring the help of the others. The film glosses over a bit of the actual bonding, but offers enough of a “They hate each other”/”They’re starting to like each other”/”No they’re back to hating each other”/”No wait, they’ll risk their lives for one another” progression to keep the viewer invested in the group and their relationships with one another.
And of course, when the time is right, they do come together. They find their conscience in the face of a shouty evil zealot guy (Lee Pace, as another in a long line of generic, monologuing baddies) and his threats to use a doomsday weapon to kill millions of people. They make amends with the lawmen, strap into their spaceships, and dive into the explosive, third act brawl-for-all legally mandated for superhero films.
But what sets Guardians apart in the midst of all this standard mythmaking and hero-development is that every time the film hits one of these stock beats and threatens to get overly dramatic or cheesy, it undercuts the moment with some well-placed humor. Each dramatic speech is followed by a silly line to liven the moment. Each major reveal is accompanied by a pratfall (no pun intended) to take the edge off. Every hokey moment is followed by one of the film’s characters rolling their eyes before the audience gets a chance too.
Humor quickly proves to be the trademark of this budding corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the way the film employs it to keep the audience laughing at any point where it might otherwise be sighing is Guardians’s not so secret weapon.
It also gets by on the complete and utter charm of the Guardians themselves. Chris Pratt’s human puppy dog qualities are familiar to anyone who enjoys the superlative Parks and Recreation. Zoe Saldana brings resolve but pathos to Gamora her third sci-fi blockbuster franchise. Dave Bautista offers a near-perfect dry comic wit, a surprise even to those lapsed pro wrestling fans who watched his heydey in the ring. And Bradley Cooper really is the hidden gem of this film as Rocket Raccoon. He nails Rocket’s sarcastic comments and perpetually beleaguered nature, while also capturing the tragic, touchy, and haunted dimensions of the character.
Then, of course, there is Groot, who represents the best things about this movie. For one thing, he is quietly (or tri-syllabically) the performative equal of his co-stars. Vin Diesel may be in his seventh go-round of implausibly smashing cars into one another, but he has experience from his early role in The Iron Giant of taking grunts, groans, and halted speech patterns and turning them into the expressions of an endearing character, a talent on full display in Guardians.
But he also represents the film’s visual acuity. The way Groot expands and contracts, unleashes unexpected beauty in the form of bioluminescent flowers, or offers a expectant, joyous expression after whomping an entire room full of bad guys, demonstrates the way Guardians uses the tools in its aesthetic toolbox to deliver character, not just thrills. It is a visually engaging movie, one where the Easter egg blue of Yondu or the preternaturally clean yet colorful world of the Nova Corps. make a film that is as distinct in its palette and iconography as it is in its style.
That also contributes to the sense of place imbued in the film. From the multicolored denizens of Xandar to the hive of scum and villainy in the interstellar cranial confines of Knowhere to the unique collection of miscreants among the Ravagers, almost from the word go, Guardians gives the viewer a sense of the ecosystem they’re stepping into. It’s one that stands apart from the rest of the M.C.U., offering a place where the Groots of the world are as unremarkable as they are unusual.
But it’s also a place where sacrifices are made for the members of those conveniently found families. For all the triteness of Guardians’s themes, it nails the big moments it really needs to, particularly in the third act, where many threads from earlier in the film pay off. From the group reluctantly resolving to fight Ronin, to Groot’s game-changing vocal variation and the gesture that follows, to the big, inevitable confrontation with the film’s villain, Gunn finds a way to move the story along, but do so in a way that’s true to the rough-around-the-edges characters he’s crafted for the screen.
And if all of that should devolve into a dance off that warrants genuine befuddlement in the midst of globe-threatening annihilation from the bad guys? All the better! That is the shine of Guardians of the Galaxy, a film that is content to tell a familiar story, but which adds such endearing texture, presents such charming characters, and freely belies the self-seriousness of its genre, that you cannot help but enjoy the star-lined ride.
About 3 times in this movie they do a 'hero shot' where the main characters all pose dramatically for the camera. It is pretty hilarious.
The best Marvel movie up to this point
This movie is awesome  and I think everyone should be watching it
Amazing job on the movie
Although I think The Avengers is a better movie overall, this is probably my favorite in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was funny, had great characters, character interactions and let's not forget about the soundtrack! The CGI was a bit up and down though. For example, Rocket Racoon is extremely detailed and looks awesome while Thanos on the other hand looks like crap.
I'd recommend it to anyone and everyone, and it's a must see if you're a fan of the genre and the universe.
I see this movie with my Bose CineMate Series and the sound was awesome!!!!
hilarious, visually stunning (even the 3D was incredible), and enjoyable from start to finish, Guardians of the Galaxy is an absolute pleasure to watch! it's already one of my favourite films of the year, and i can see it becoming one of my favourite Marvel films
I think I got caught up in the hype of this movie, I had absolutely no idea what to expect when watching this (a few years too late.) I haven't read the comics and wasn't overly familiar with the characters. The film was good, but just not really my kind of film, I hoped it would bring me into enjoying more superhero films.
Easy friendly safe interesting and extremely educational. Thanks trakt.
This is as good as the first Avengers and it didn´t need a series of movies in preperation. I knew nothing of those characters before the movie came out yet it hit a homerun and I instantly liked all of them. The atmosphere created by the visuals and the soundtrack is contagious. Althought the movie follows a succesful blueprint it surprises at times with unexpected and unconventional scenes. It´s a fun ride from start to finish.
This is easily one of the best Marvel movies! It's a modern classic.
The script is original and fresh, the comedic timing is spot on, the soundtrack is perfect. They took a bunch of unpopular characters that aren't necessarily interesting or good for that matter, and made them even more then interesting, they went so far as making them heroes.
Common film cliches, the movie. They may be intentional but it still turns a movie that's very visually appealing into a complete mess in terms of story, acting, meaning, etc. It will lead you on for two seconds and then completely jump the gun and rush into something so fast that you do not feel any sort of impact from it.
Definitely one of the best movies this year! The most unique film Marvel has done so far. I must admit I had high expectations before watching it, but this movie surpassed them all. Strongly recommended!
Definitely one of the best movies this year and of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Awesome Movie!!
Andy Dwyer: Peter Quill, Star-Lord! (best than FBI)
Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), you take my heart!
We are Groot at the sound of 80's...
Awesome movie! The characters are extremely lovable and unique. It does have it's clichés, but it's still a great action movie that brings plenty of laughs.
very good, indeed.
go watch it!
I 'm not the biggest sci-fi fan . But this movie has action, suspense , humor , sadness . Just everything what a fantastic film needs .
Marvel is literally unstoppable! Guardians of the Galaxy is already the fourth Marvel film coming out this year and it looks like from film to film quality always gets over the previous film.
Guardians of the Galaxy left fans standing behind with the output of the first trailer of the film. The die hard fans of the Comics found that the fact that the film seems to be a bit different from what Marvel had shown until now, counting up the use of many humorous moments, would mock the story. My first impression was completely contrary and as I imagined, this was one breath of fresh air that introduces almost a new variant within the category of movies about superheroes.
Would be a thief, an assassin, a maniac, a tree and raccoon able to save the Galaxy? That's what we try to find out. An important task lies in the hands of this apparently uncontrolled team that will not only discover important facts about each as beings but also feel the responsibility of what is having the life of other beings in their hands.
Peter Quill (or Star Lord as he likes to be called) is a human who was kidnapped when she was very young by aliens and lives since then in the Galaxy. He stole an artifact that for unknown reasons seems to be desired by many. This leads later that Gamora, Drax, Groot and Rocket intersect in his way and together they will form the Guardians of the Galaxy.
We could say that the movie is actually a superheroes comedy full of action, but the comic tone that could possibly have ruined it, makes it very smart and entertaining without ever seriously victimized the dramatic part of the story.
Very thrilling and full of action from beginning to end, the comedy is never used in a pathetic way. Everything else is also great, the special effects, the sets, the wardrobe and especially the magnificent soundtrack that is used in an absolutely brilliant way.
The characters are absolutely delicious and we connect with them immediately. Each of their stories affect us differently and makes us want to know more about them. One of the reasons why the film works so is the fact that the characters appear to be actually real.
All actors were impeccably chosen for their roles, even Dave Bautista, the famous ex-wrestler who had left me with some questions about his performance. Chris Pratt was great and managed to completely be the perfect protagonist full of charisma. Rocket Raccoon, with the voice of Bradley Cooper is arguably the funniest character and steals every scene he is in! For the rest of the cast, Zoe Saldana (who plays the ruthless Gamora), Vin Diesel (apparently a silly tree) among others, there's nothing bad to say about!
I must emphasize that as I read in some comments about the film, it reminded me a lot of Star Wars. All of that universe and how it was transported to the film is somehow similar. Now the question is, whether this will be the Star Wars of the new generation?
Guardians of the Galaxy is an awesome movie and is undoubtedly one of the best and most well done movies that Marvel has ever made! A perfect blend of action, comedy, emotion and heart in a history.
Good job, Mr. James Gunn! You directed a masterpiece of entertainment.
The start to a truly epic adventure. Never gets boring as there's about 9 different lives you switch through, who are all uniquely different. Amazing dialogue. Amazing cgi. Amazing acting. Amazing directing.
58 | The strongest element of Guardians of the Galaxy is The Guardians of the Galaxy itself. How they talk to each other despite their hatred among themselves was so entertained to watch. The quirky humor that this film gave us made it fun and makes us want to know more about them. Another good part of this film was the cinematography, it kind of easy to like it because the film took place in space. But, there was also the bad part which is the villain. He didn't feel dangerous to our protagonists at all. This film was like if we playing video games in easy mode, even though how strong the enemies look like we all know the protagonists could beat them easily. It is also not because the enemies are weak but the protagonists have plot armor. Anyways, Guardians of the Galaxy is still an enjoyable and adventurous film to watch.

I've watched this three times now and each time it's gotten less enjoyable.
The first time I watched this, I thought "Wow! I haven't been this visually blown away by a space flick since I watched "Star Wars" as a kid. I was really impressed by what I'll call the universe building. The galaxies, the planets, and so on. I would like to follow these characters around an established system of galaxies in future movies. Kind of like how we explored with the cast of "Star Trek". I also enjoyed the quirkiness of the characters and the humor that was injected into the ominous threat from bad guy, Ronan the Accuser.
My second viewing revealed that Ronan was a bland and underwhelming villian and that the humor seemed to try and cover that up. Seriously, Starlord defeats Ronan in a dance-off?!?!
The third and final watch uncovered that the quirkiness of the characters actually annoyed me. The movie that first struck me as a visually satisfying tale of galaxy-hopping explorers turned into a comedy about goofy, twitchy characters. And Peter Quill's mixtapes from his Mom is sappy as Hell. I'm not saying the songs aren't competent staples of '70's AM Radio, it's just that there's no way kids today would give them them the time of day if they didn't have this movie to give them context.

The best. MCU. Movie. Ever.
Ever.
I am really stingy with my 10/10 ratings, this is one of these movies.
Movies that do something unique, something special.
For this one the pacing was brilliant, the soundtrack phenomenal, the cast was great, each one has his thing going for him and everyone is vital.
Man, if Groot didn't sacrifice himself, we wouldn't have cute but quickly annoying baby Groot and edgy Teen Groot
I’m so happy I decided to rewatch this as I forgot how fun this movie is. This is honestly a movie that’ll make you feel like you’re having a good time and going on a ride with a group that is finding their footing with each other but eventually along the way they find strength in being united.
We finally get to see the big baddie in the movie if you’re watching all the movies in order, I will say I’m glad they changed his look later on as in this one I wasn’t feeling it but it was good seeing him.
This a good movie and definitely worth a watch.
One of my favorite MCU entries. Great characters, fun script with laughs coming out of situations and character interactions, good action set pieces with decent pacing, and state of the art special effects. Entertaining and blasts past you at the speed of light.
When planning how I was going watch all these MCU films, this is one I earmarked as being one I thought I'd enjoy - not based on anything of note, I knew very little, but from the passing screenshots and such I had seen it seemed like one I'd enjoy. I'm happy to say I certainly did!
'Guardians of the Galaxy' is so enjoyable. It's 121 minutes of pure entertainment. It does, at least to me, have a different feel to it when compared to the nine preceding MCU films. That's not a negative for either this or those earlier productions, it just felt different to me.
I particularly enjoyed the cast, which features - as is customary at this point - a load of well known names. Chris Pratt is, probably, the perfect choice for Peter, he carries the role extremely well - his humour sticks out, but he also performs the more serious stuff nicely.
Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper and Michael Rooker are all thoroughly enjoyable too. Vin Diesel (kinda?) appears to portray Groot, which pleases me as someone who is a big fan of 'Fast & Furious'. There are a few others in there, including Djimon Hounsou and Benicio del Toro. Terrific cast!
There is a lot to like here. I look forward to seeing the follow-ups to it.
I thought it was free service
The Revisit the MCU Project (2021) #10 of 23
To be honest, I understand all the love Guardians of the Galaxy gets. The music is fabulous, the acting is good, funny as hell, the action is out of this world...literally, and the story...well...the story has its moments.
BUT...
I also understand why people have issues with it. In some ways, it's one of the best MCU movies you have seen...in others...just plain weird. The pacing leaves a little to be desired. The one-liners usually hit home, but some fall flat like a pancake. The villain is rather weak, and I can see why someone thinks Rocket is a very unfunny character.
Despite this though...I always end up having a good time watching Guardian of the Galaxy. It's a hell of a ride, and I laugh out loud several times during its two-hour running time. Can't really ask for more, can you?
Enjoyable.. Funny.. Dramatic.. Good mix of everything, good for re-watch too!
Loved this movie. My only complaint would be some over the top attempts at humor fell really flat with me, like when Pratt danced to distract Roan (sp?) and moments like that that just felt out of place. There was plenty of humor that worked, it's just that there were 2-3 times the joke missed badly for me. Still not a big deal and probably the best super hero movie I've ever seen that isn't a Batman movie. I love Groot.
Somehow, the hype train didn't roll straight over this one. It's just as good as advertised. With so many chiseled jaws and grim, determined brows crowding the superhero scene over the last ten years, I think we really needed a film like this to remind us of how much great, loose fun the genre can still be. In fact, even calling it a superhero movie may be something of a stretch - it spans a number of different classes, plucking fitting elements from each and packing them down into a beautifully odd, curious, colorful bouquet. It's as much Star Wars or Indiana Jones as it is Thor, a glowing hunk of sci-fi and adventure with no taste for restraint and a ticklish funny bone that really sets it apart.
Having read comics for most of my life, I know how uncommon it is to see a filmed adaptation that even nears the kind of boundless imagination possible on the printed page. In this, too, Guardians of the Galaxy is a gust of fresh air - at all times, the screen brims with rich detail, superior dashes of inconsequential world-building and oodles of hints and winks. It's as close as I think Hollywood has ever come to flashing the sense of joy and wonder inherent in that medium to a broader audience, a real treat to drink in and enjoy.
I can't help but admire the balls it took to go this far into left field, to create something so wholly different from the present status quo. Admire, that is, and appreciate. What a ride.
Marvel's films can be really awesome...or not that great. This one had a fun story, engaging characters, and a wonderful throwback soundtrack. I was also pleasantly surprised that the profanity count was low for a "PG-13". It wasn't perfect, but it was still great fun.
James Gunn hit the mainstream with a movie about a talking raccoon, I can never complain about the Hollywood system ever again.
Guardians of the Galaxy should not work on most levels but Gunn was just crazy enough to pull it off. The character interactions here rival the Wheadon penned interactions in The Avengers and the Gunn’s direction brings the strange worlds he has created to live in striking ways. Gunn was given a chance to showcase his humour and he ran with it, Guardians goes from dark and meandering to fun and rapidly paced within seconds and it is a complete jot to watch no matter how many times you have seen it.
Just a whole lot of fun from beginning to end. Add a soundtrack to keep you dancing; great lines, like "I'm going to die surrounded by the biggest idiots in the galaxy."; an endless string of punch lines and so much more. Thoroughly unique and enjoyable. Mining the pop culture of the 80s and its music. So unlike the rest of the Marvel Universe you'd think it inconceivable that they will join the Avengers Infinity War, but they did. Acting was just right. CGI was a riot of colour. Just well done. I don't know what would have made it better. Especially on rewatches, I give this film a 10 (just right) out of 10. [Space Heroes Action Adventure]
honestly one of the bests movies in the mcu. the aesthetics, the beauty of the space, the soundtrack... I AM SHOOK.
just gold. chris pratt = 10/10
Great film.. story lack a little but enjoyed the great FX....
Love the humour in this movie , absolutely brilliant
Absolutely awesome movie. great music and cast.
I really love this movie! It's very enjoyable and i like the music in it.
How fricking good is this movie?! It's got great action, lovable characters, the best soundtrack and incredible visuals. It's such a refreshing movie that can be funny but also dramatic without it being jarring. Everything is good with the probable exception of the, IMO, heavy handed allegory to the Israel-Palestinian conflict (or maybe I'm reading too much into it).
This movie was great!! Highly recommend others to see it if they haven't!
I like it, thank you very much.
Best Marvel's movie so far! Matches perfectly the jokes and the emotional scenes.
It was amazing! Really fun. I don´t usually like this kind of movies, but they are the best group of losers ever! And Groot is so adorable...
Amazing!!!
I am Groot! Enought to say. :D
Awesome! Oh Andy Dwyer! And it's good to know that Groot and Rocket will return . To the voices: great job!
A fresh compilation of all the components necessary for a great film. Loved it!
best movie
Very good movie. Not too nerdy for me, and I'm not a big fan of Marvel but I thoroughly enjoyed this.
Truly amazing movie! Really enjoyed every part of it!!
That. Was. Unbelievable!!!
Still thinking watch this or not? Here is my answer: turn off pc, take your money and go watch this awesome movie!!
My boy Pratt is gold. Can't think of many others who could've pulled it off like him.
This might as well be my favorite Marvel movie so far. Action, drama and comedy are balanced at perfection and it has a sky-high replay level. This movie is a game changer, and the Guardians will definitely claim their role as one of Marvel's most promising franchises.
I remember seeing this in theaters and it not really clicking with me at first. I think because it is not your typical superhero movie and that's what I was expecting but now the more I see it the more I love it. The chemistry between everyone is great. The interactions between the five leads are the best part. The soundtrack really is amazing. The effects look fantastic. This has got to be one of the funnest and funniest superhero movies. The only thing that isn't that good is the one note villain.
Most important part of the movie: We. Are. Groot.
THIS MOVIE WAS SO MUCH FUN AND LITERALLY HAD EVERYTHING IN IT, THE LAUGHS THE ACTION,
THE EMOTIONAL JOURNEY, THE SPECIAL EFFECTS THE STORY THE CHARACTERS EVERYTHING JUST ABSOLUTELY WORKED AND THE SOUNDTRACK, WELL OUTSTANDING. WHAT I LOVE SO MUCH ABOUT MARVEL IS THEY CAN TAKE CHARACTERS AWAY FROM THE AVENGER SIDE OF THINGS,
CHARACTERS WE MAY NOT KNOW TO MUCH ABOUT IF AT ALL AND MAKE US NOT JUST CARE FOR THEM BUT ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM AND BE COMPLETELY INVESTED IN THERE STORIES AND WELLBEING
AND FOR THAT
ALONE I LOVE MARVEL 3000
AND I'M HERE TILL THE END OF THE LINE.
THIS MOVIE IS SUPER FRICKING AWESOME AMAZING FANTASTIC PHENOMENAL AND I COULD HAVE EASILY SAT FOR ANOTHER HOUR OF RUNTIME ON TOP. THE HUMOUR IS ABSOLUTELY ON POINT AND HILARIOUS AND THE BANTER IS OFF THE CHARTS AND AWESOME AND IS PURE GENIUS.
AND EVERYONE'S PERFORMANCES WERE FLAWLESS AND EVERYONE HAD THEIR TIME TO SHINE AND SHINE THEY DID.
THIS SPECTACULAR MASTERPIECE IS FLAWLESS AND I LOOK VERY VERY MUCH FORWARD
TO WHAT THE
ASGARDIANS OF THE GALAXY
HAVE IN STORE FOR US NEXT
WOW..JUST...WOW...
10/10
MORE THAN :a: FAN
ALWAYSTHATMARVELGUY
I will probably eventually be tired of this movie. I used to be able to watch the Matrix and The Dark Knight pretty much every day too lol.
It’s a go to movie when I am feeling down.
The strength of "Guardians of the Galaxy" definitely lies in its likable characters. James Gunn wouldn't be my first choice for an old-school space opera, but you know he has a thing for lovable losers and misfits who are soft on the inside, who seek redemption and a true family that can accept them for what they are.
You already know how this is going to end, yet it's still a fresh and extremely vibrant movie to enjoy with your popcorn. Action and character development are well balanced, and despite the mandatory slapstick moments, the humor is never too subtle, never too dumb. It got enough layers for multiple kinds of audiences.
My only complaint would be the forgettable villain and the pacing falling a little in the middle. I also thought that the Nova Corps main guy deserved a bigger role.
I have no idea what took me so long to watch this MCU entry, but I'm glad I finally did. Groot and Rocket naturally steal the show but the flawed humanity of the rest of the characters has made this an enjoyable MCU offering.
Would love to watch again
Wow!! I had absolutely no idea Van Diesel was the of Groot. Didn't even put it together!! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
For some odd reason this movie never sparked my interest, when it originally was shown in cinemas. Now in 2018, after watching Infinity War, I finally caught up on it and I must say it's an amazing film. A lot of fun and nice action makes this flick a must-see.
We are Groot. The galaxy only gets bigger and better.
Groot has morning wood all day
Delightful wit and visual spectacles makes Guardians of the Galaxy fresh entertainment.
Great film! Looking forward to the sequel.
What about that special appearance of a certain Duck after the credits? I think he prefers to be called Howard
What everybody's said about it is basically true. Lots of fun and one of the best movies released this year.
One of the few great films of 2014. Turn off your brain and have fun!
Everything is awesome!
Everything is cool when you're part of a team!
Sorry, wrong movie, but it was awesome anyway.
What was first - Star Wars or Guardians of the Galaxy? For me both are great, and I mean the real Star wars, not the prequels.
One of the best the MCU has to offer. Comedy that hasn't yet become extremely annoying, an awesome soundtrack, great action, and an awesome cast.
Film 158 (Goal: 300) of 2024:
Words from a review of a wannabe critic can not properly display the love I have for this film. In the 10 years I have seen it 12 years, and it's rating has never been in question. One of the crowning jewels in the MCU filmography, director James Gunn took his humour, vision and character work to a ragtag group of characters, many starring actors who were chance choices, and watched it succeed and blossom into the massive success that was to come. Multiple sequels and a Christmas special, an unrelated video game (go play it - it's excellent), and a prominent part in Disney's theme parks, the Guardians success can be traced back to this wonderful film.
An brilliant film, that is unlike anything the MCU had released up until that point. Its witty, funny, stunning, beautiful, creative, imaginative. Simply put, it's amazing and of the 2,140 films I've seen since cataloguing, it's one of only 15 films to get the 5 star rating from me.
I had the pleasure of watching this during the original release in a "4D" theater (one where the seats move). I had no knowledge of the GotG at the time but was a fan of Chris Pratt from P&R. This is hands down my favorite MCU film and one of my top 20. After the MCU phases were baked in a little more and a timeline was clearer, the story makes more sense after all these years but even in 2014, it was a hell of a ride (literally).
Do you have a favorite character, or are you like me and enjoy the entire main cast for different reasons? That's what makes this movie.

this movie makes me happy
“You said it yourself, bitch. We’re the Guardians of the Galaxy.” 10/10 :star:
Great casting and acting shot well good story line
Interesanre homenaje final, despues de los creditos de Howard the duck.
We really did have it all
Like a little kid with an adult sense of humor, Guardians is sassy, brassy and all around classy.
(Rewatch before seeing Vol. 3.)
Guardians of the Galaxy is a remarkable addition to the Marvel Universe. As a Marvel fan, it's hard not to love this movie, and it's quickly become my second favorite after Iron Man. The film boasts a fantastic cast, with standout performances from Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Dave Bautista. The plot is engaging and filled with action, humor, and heart, making it a must-watch for superhero and sci-fi fans alike. Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy is a great example of a movie that perfectly balances humor, action, and heart, and it's an essential addition to the Marvel Universe.
Had to turn off after an hour. No storyline, no character emotion & no backstory whatsoever. I felt I was watching a follow up to a prequel. You see a child being abducted by aliens and then see a walking tree and a talking racoon. Plain to see it’s only children giving this a high rating because of the cgi and not adults that know anything about cinema.
This movie and Winter Soldier are the best in entire MCU, simply because they're the most unattached from the Marvel's superhero formula. This movie is more a space opera like Star Wars than a superhero movie, a valiant attempt, must admit.
A colorful, juicy, exciting adventure stuffed with humor across amazing worlds in the company of bright unforgettable Marvel heroes. You don’t need to be a geek at all to have fun, and the soundtrack can be safely added to the playlist. A real folk blockbuster as is.Can be reviewed!
We Are Groot. Funny and action-packed.
Boring, part of the avant-garde cinema which tell stories about demented comics in a demented fashion
Can I pick my on shows

The Good:
Guardians of the Galaxy is a thrilling cosmic adventure and a success in terms of writing, directing, acting, visuals and music.
James Gunn has taken an unknown Marvel title and successfully turned it into a new hit for the company. By combining a fast-paced adventure with sharp humour, loads of fan-service and an imaginative visual style, Gunn has constructed one of the most enjoyable and original superhero films ever created.
The dialogue is wonderful, filled with jokes, pop culture references and bickering between the main characters. The script allows all characters to shine together and separately, making them all fleshed out and the group dynamic fascinating to watch.
This is another successful cast. Chris Pratt is phenomenal as Peter Quill, Bradley Cooper captures the gruffly Rocket perfectly and somehow Vin Diesel makes Groot distinctively his own. Dave Bautista proves he is more than just muscle mass and delivers the best lines of the film as the powerful, yet simple-minded Drax.
On the villain side, Lee Pace is surprisingly menacing as Ronan the Accuser while Karen Gillan is great as Nebula, a role that gets better for each film she appears in.
This has been said multiple times before, but Guardians of the Galaxy features a killer soundtrack, filled with gems from the 70s and 80s. Real music and good music and used in creative ways as part of the story.
There are so many details, busy backgrounds and lively locations in this film, that it feels palpably realistic. The mix of CGI and practical effects work very well, bringing this film alive better than many other sci-fi films.
The story isn’t just mindless action and breath-taking visuals. It is also a story about friendship, family values and misfits working together to become something larger than life. It’s like Suicide Squad, but miles better.
The Bad:
The love story between Peter and Gamora feels underdeveloped, particularly since it appears out of nowhere and climaxes without much build-up.
The story initially throws in a bunch of possible villains but doesn’t quite seem to know which one should be the primary one - Ronan, Thanos, Yondu or somebody else - until the final act of the film.
The Ugly:
I am Groot
WACPINE RATING: 9.43 / 10 = 4,5 stars
I love movies with lots of special effects in them and a good plot

This movie was just pure Marvel at its best, firing on all cylinders (which means that it was absolutely spectacular). We are set off on one wild journey in a universe that not many other than the more hardcore Marvel Universe fans know of. I wasn't quite sure if this one was going to be as good as it was hyped, but I was gladly proved wrong. While Guardians of the Galaxy doesn't have quite the star power or following of The Avengers (honestly, what does?), I thought that the cast had just as good if not better chemistry during this hell of a raucous adventure. To pull off one of these large cast/group movies is no easy task. Zach Snyder, please take notes for the upcoming Justice League movie (and Batman vs Superman).
The standouts of this movie without a doubt are Chris Pratt (playing Peter Quill) and Bradley Cooper (playing Rocket) but all the characters (even the supporting ones) contribute to the hilarious dialog and tone of this movie. I never thought that I would laugh (and even shed a tear) from hearing the same line, "I am Groot" about 20 different times. Vin Diesel deserves an Oscar nomination for this one :) The humor is so good and ever-present that if I didn't know any better, I would have thought this was a summer comedy. The effects are absolutely stunning and the set pieces are quite original and brilliant.
Go watch GotG in the theaters and support this brilliant freshmen performance from this new generation of Marvel stars because, come on, "they're the Guardians of the Galaxy, bitch." I'm thrilled for this new franchise and where the new expanded universe is heading. Bring on The Avengers 2 and more Thanos!!
