Almost everything in this is aces. Good music, well shot, decently funny, great family relationships for each of the male and female lead, very heartfelt and super nice representation for a movie to be almost entirely in sign language.
This would be a literal 9 or 10 if they cut out all the (very bad) parts where the male lead talks to himself about the female lead at his desk/in his bedroom. Those scenes are totally out of step with the rest of the very moving, very tender, very gentle, very thoughtful stuff happening and come across as totally dorky, over the top and desperate.
A potentially strong screenplay diluted by amateurish direction and aimless drivel. Maybe it's a product of its time and place but, that doesn't change the results.
