Hellboy did not need a reboot what it needed was a sequel or two. Doubt any reboot can do it better than Guillermo.
Thanks for ruining hell boy character with this movie, I saw the bad ratings on imdb and other websites but I have to see for myself what a waste of time this movie is.
Like a chocolate Easter bunny, it looks good and has taste but it's essentially hollow inside.
Not great. I enjoyed seeing all the stuff from the comics, but the story just felt like a lot of chunks without much connecting them, and the direction was pretty flat and somewhat amateurish. A huge part of the story was just told to you, rather than shown. I get the feeling that this would be nearly incomprehensible to people who haven't read the comics.
All that said, I really hope this does well, because I want more. David Harbour was a great choice for Hellboy.
Worst movie of the year so far. Everything was terrible. The gore was extremely forced and they tried to use it to replace everything else. Clearly that plan failed. Movie is just another movie about a guy with Daddy issues. Fights were terrible.
I went to an early screening. I want my money back NOW
It’s a Milla Jovovich movie.
What the fuck were you expecting?
Wow I hate everyone who made this movie Forced Gore, forced unrealistic diversity. I would gladly watch green lantern 10 times instead of this pure poop.
Hated the music, hellboy mumbled most of the time, poopy cgi (wow I thought it's 2008 again so thanks for that) bad baaad baaad acting from everyone, omg how?!
I'm just sad Milla was in it, I like her
Just don't watch this.
This is so unnecessarily over the top with everything and yet still boring.
One hundred per cent nonsense. Stay away from this.
I actually kinda liked it
In my opinion, it was a good film.
Trash. Why is part 2 releasing this month? What am I supposed to do with it. Oh wait, that’s a documentary, but still, what am I supposed to do with that?
The new Hellboy movie directed by Neil Marshall and starring David Harbour is a disappointment according to the author. Despite a high-profile cast and the ambition to create something gritty and edgy, the final product is instead a mess of terrible writing, subpar visual effects and unconvincing performances. The author also draws comparisons to the previous Hellboy movies directed by Guillermo del Toro and starred Ron Perlman, which had a stronger cinematic flair and world-building. Additionally, the author's opinion that the movie is inferior and trying too hard to be edgy and gritty, also lacked of nuance and failed in its storytelling. The music is the only good point the author found in the movie.
The only reason I watched this was because I had seen clips of some very strange looking giant monsters in this movie. And in the last act, there were some truly disturbing Hell spawn marching through London. Turns out, the clips I saw were the full scenes from this version of "Hellboy" and I didn't need to sit through this depressing, CGI-laden mess of a movie.
I didn't have any expectations that this would be similar to Guillermo Del Toro's masterpiece, but Neil Marshall, cast and crew made an overly bloody, violent, ugly movie. David Harbour as Hellboy mostly screams in agony and grunts the whole runtime and Milla Jovovich mails it in.
The CGI is almost entirely awful, except for the giant monsters in London, which are pretty disturbing. It's probably because they are just killing innocents and are only on screen for a few moments.
I'm probably giving "Hellboy" too generous of a score. This is something I'm not sure many would enjoy.
Not sure at all how this is dark and gritty. The soundtrack was just too much, not sure they realised that you didn't have to have music playing almost the whole time. The story, plot, acting, accents all just awful, and the film thinks it's being funny when it has no idea of comedy.
Poor film, only ever have it on in the background or if you want a burglar to think someone is at home.
O.K, that was kinda fun with dinner.
So over the top that I giggled quite a bit. Guess it's for you if you're into that kind of jam. sort of "Machete Kill" but with monsters (wait, wasn't this "From dusk till Dawn"?!)
Nice comic-action-horror for a quiet* Monday eve.
*actually the soundtrack was awesome, made it a whole lot freakier
Not nearly as bad as the couch surfing spoiled tomato yelpers say...sure..I was equal parts entertained as much as I was corned out but it's far better than nothing when you're bored as hell so stfu ppphhhffrrrrttt
I enjoyed the movie. Easy to watch and good characters. Obviously there will be a follow on from the look of the ending of this one.
Characters saved this movie (Alice, Hellboy, Daimio, and Broom). Awful attempts at British accents (please just let Daniel Dae Kim and Sasha Lane keep their accents), poor dialogue quite often, waaaaaay too much gore. Big fight was a tad anti-climatic and rushed, but then the first post-credits scene was a hint at what this movie could have been. Like, good
We could've gotten Hellboy 3 from Guillermo del Toro, but we got this instead. Everything is so unfair.
I knew just from the opening narration from Ian McShane that this was going to be a shit show.
I feel so sorry for David Harbour and Director Neil Marshall. In another life, this could've worked.
This film is exactly why we don't need these fucking reboots and updates. Either they try and make it really edgy (like this one), and just end up making it a parody of what it should be, or... they just neuter the shit out of it to "update" it for today's more "sensitive" audience. Either way, it's insulting to the creators of the original, and most of all, it's a giant insult to people that are fond of the originals. Grow a fucking spine, and try and make something original instead.
Fuck me. This is awful.
There is an unwritten law about reboot and/or remake movies: do it ONLY if you can do better than the original, otherwise is arrogance. Well, this Hellboy is pure, distilled arrogance.
We need just one word:
why?
Despite the less than stellar ratings this movie has received I have to say that I quite liked it actually. It is a much more violent, gory and adult movie than the previous Hellboy movies and this is probably contributing a lot to my appreciation of it. I so dislike when they dumb down a story or character just because the bean counters think they can get more kids to watch it and thus make more money. Or worse, because they want to cater to the easily offended whiners.
This movie starts off already in the first scene where the language make it clear the easily offended should have stayed home. It continues in the same manner. It is indeed a quite violent movie with a lot of gory effects. At least for a movie based on a “regular” US comics book character. When the big demons are released towards the end of the movie and the human casualties mount the movie becomes quite inventive in the various gory ways a human can be killed.
Then we have the scene with the “birth” of Hellboy which is, luckily, fairly true to the original story and shows not only Nazis but doesn’t resort to any SJW dumbassery and tries to obfuscate parts of the Nazi uniforms. Instead the swastika is displayed as it should be. That should be enough to get most SJW whiners to shit themselves. Needless to say there is not much politically correct preaching in the movie either which is a relief.
The story is fairly okay. Nothing really to write home about but not really bad either. The action is, obviously, quite good. Hellboy himself is played fairly well by David Harbour and Ian McShane is not bad at all as Professor Broom. Milla Jovovich never really shined as The Blood Queen though.
There are a few things that where not stellar as well though. That warthog looking changeling which played a central part of the movie was often just ridiculous and the outburst by Hellboy and rant about why humans and demons could live in piece or something was completely unnecessary. Also, I felt that Hellboy was on the receiving end of the clobbering a bit too much. It was really not until the six-month-after scenes at the very end that he really displayed the self confident ass-kicking character that I would like to see him as.
Anyway, I quite liked the movie and it’s a shame that it didn’t get better ratings. That Rotten SJW tomatoes gave it shit ratings was expected of course although even with their new censored user rating system they didn’t manage to get their “audience” to get in line with their “critics”. 17% critics rating while over 50% of the audience gave it a rating of six or more. Big fail again RT.
The after scenes made it quite clear that they hoped for a sequel but with the poor performance I do not think that will happen. A shame if you ask me.
Better than number 1, was done well
This wasn't that bad don't understand the low rating. Only thing will say is watch it knowing it has nothing to do with the other two movies. The only parts I didn't like that they killed his dad wish they didn't do, also the monsters coming from Hell they could cut.
The CGI during the giants' battle scene was painful to watch... (most of the movie was in regards to CGI, but man, that particular scene..!) And don't get me started on the Gruagach. What did they use, a rubber costume?! Ho-rri-ble!
Yes this movie is lacking del Toro's artistic style, but if you liked the comic you will like this one too. Do not listen to normies, this is not a movie for them, they should just keep watching mcu or dceu...
In comparison to imdb, the movie is doing relatively well here with 62%.
Having said that, I can't rate it at all. Already after the introduction I was considering to quit. Took me a total of 30 min to convince myself to do just that. I am no comic reader, I do know the del Torro version. I liked those. Can't remember a lot but Pearlman was much better as Hellboy (whole cast was better) and I don't think there was a fantasy angle with Merlin, Arthur and Excalibur. That was the main part that put me off. Doesn't feel like it belongs there. And like many others mentioned, the movie looks dated. Fifty Million just isn't enough for this type of movie.
I do finish my movies most of the time. Even if I don't like them I let them play out. There is only a small percentage I don't finish and this falls right into that category.
I too think this was a bad movie with a bad script. Just gore and which was not even convincing enough.
Anyways I had already lost hopes in Hellboy since the last part.
I think the way to look at this is too many adults are watching kids movies. If you liked the old Hellboy then you will like this one.If you’re looking for something to whine about because they have a new Hellboy after then you’ll hate this movie.
Its just so bad. The acting, the story, the cgi and the sound track. It's like Monty python meets hellboy but not in a good way. Don't waste your time on this crap. I turned it off at the half way point when I realized I dont care what happens in the rest of the movie...
the editing makes it feel like a CW show, not a movie.
:fire: I'm glad that Hellboy is back on the big screen, but this one's a mixed bag. I'm fine with the cast; David played a good Hellboy, and Milla was a wonderful villain. There's definitely potential. However, this film suffered mostly from very rushed editing. There were many scenes where I feel they should've given a little more time with such as introducing characters, performing certain actions, or flashback scenes. There were some funnies that got me chuckling, I admit, and the lines fit the Hellboy character just fine. The visual effects are a half-and-half mix of actors in rubber suit costumes and CG, albeit some good but short green screens with the slow-motion fire and backgrounds. Even the gore effects were awesome. Most of the entertainment is found in the later half of the film. I just feel this would've benefited more if the story was spread out as a (Netflix) TV series because there's so much of Hellboy's story to tell. Director Neil Marshall had done a few notable TV shows already, and I enjoyed his Dog Soldiers and The Descent films very much. The post end credits scenes do set up for a sequel so we'll see if that happens. My friend and I left the theater just a tiny bit underwhelmed and now longing to rewatch the original first two Hellboy films by Guillermo del Toro that starred Ron Perlman, which from memory, provided us with not only the dark undertone but also a more lush quality to them. Wait for this to arrive on video if you're curious. Otherwise, I think other films like Shazam!, Us, Missing Link, or The Curse of La Llorrona would be the better choice.
I really wanted to like this as there aren't many comic based movies with R rating, but unfortunately this was bad... There was plenty of action but the CGI was so-so, the story was all over the place and the pacing was way too fast... decent cast, I think the actors really tried their best but the writing didn't helped them at all... shame...
Supposedly Ed Skrein should've played the role of Major Ben Daimio but stepped down to make way for an asian actor as to respect source material. I can understand that but I hope there weren't any SJW bullcrap involved with this...
Couldn't really get excited about this one. Overly long with not too many good lines. Ian McShane is good. He is seldom bad.
Really cannot recommend this one ... Hoped it would be at least 70% as good as the old series but not a chance.
Realy Good i hope is coming one more
Don’t listen to the snowflakes, this movie is great :)
Sadly the best scene is the add on at the end that takes place 6 months later.
Interesting ideas, but suffers badly from the execution. CGI and buckets of fake blood can’t replace good acting.
Ron Pearlman movies are much better.
Of the many terrible things in this, I think Dae Kim's accent must be the worst... though the 60s tower block flat having a tiled fireplace and chimney comes a close second...
Just because Ron Perlman played a good Hellboy doesn't mean David Harbour was challenged filling his shoes. I actually liked David's Hellboy prosthetics and body sculpture better. It's more natural and hellish rather than the plasticky version of the original Hellboy.
Milla Jovovich played a very bad Nimue. She wasn't for for this role which imo actually contributed to lower ratings. A powerful witch requires a skillful and talented acting to be believable and Milla just doesn't fit the description.
The rest of the casting is just weak, but the movie is overall good. Set design and action scenes didn't lack in talent, and the camera works helped make those fight scenes enjoyable.
You can't say it's a bad movie imo, and you also can't say it's great. it's a good Hellboy reboot if you don't compare it to the original ones story line which was very rich.
So.... After 30mins I thought "This movie is SHIT!! No one in this life could ever make a better Hellboy than RON PERLMAN!!!"
And the rest was disappointing....
I gave a 7 only because one person died and what that person said brought tears to my eyes.
There are a very couple of visual effects I like but that's all...
I love Milla J. and Ian M. but not in this movie. No.
I liked it... Not anywhere near as good as Ron Perlman, but as far as reboots go it wasn't bad... Let's face it, most reboots are horrible.
The gore was a tad graphic, and some of the themes questionable.. But was in the $5 bin so I don't feel cheated.
The film was awful but the casting of Stephen Graham was genius
Poor storyline, poor CGI, poor action scenes, poor movie. Bring del Toro back.
Annoying amounts of gore, felt unnecessary. I really liked the Del Toro's Hellboy, so this was a disappointment. There was some nice banter but editing and CGI were really subpar.

Allowing Instagram to Decide What I Watch While in Isolation:
Day 4
I honestly thought this would have been worse given the critical response but don't get me wrong it is pretty bad.
David Harbour is great casting and he brings a lot to the role however at times he is written like an annoying video game character that wont stop spitting out one-liners every time they punch a bad guy. The plot is generic and paper-thin ultimately leading to a very underwhelming third act.
The casting is really good and a handful of moments do make this one almost worth recommending but it is let down in the end by a very by the numbers plot and disappointing finale.
I actually enjoyed the previous Hellboy movies. Far from great movies but enjoyable to watch.
I started this reboot with low expectations and glad I did. Not a great performance from neither of the characters and the best characters were Nimue cause it's Milla easy on the eues and the incredibly creepy and yucky witch (Baba yaga) who doesn't get enough screen time.
Not a memorable film and really not an enjoyable one. Wouldn't have missed anything if I haven't seen it.
David Harbour (Stranger Things) is about as good as Ron Perlman in the role of Hellboy. The problem is that Neil Marshall is no Guillermo Del Toro.
You can’t have Hellboy walk around in public with no one having a reaction. Del Toro knew this and Hellboy in his movies, knew this. In this one he is too careless.
Nevertheless this Hellboy reboot kept my attention and had its moments due to Harbour. I also like all the hidden world aspects of it. There’s some cool creatures too.
In all though it’s just an entertaining bad movie. We all wanted a part 3, not a reboot. I think the movie actually could have been worse though.
8 - Great
What an amazing reboot!
Disclaimer: Ron Perlman was, and is, the perfect Hellboy. That being said, David Harbour wasn't terrible. What was terrible, though, was how Andrew Cosby and Neil Marshall attempted to translate some of the most intriguing Hellboy stories from the page to the screen. Anyone not familiar with Hellboy will not buy into this film at all since so much context and connecting material is missing. You can't just throw an ancient evil prophecy, a bunch of giants, a second sister secret society (that has their own nefarious plans), some undeveloped BPRD agents, and nods to tidbits of Hellboy lore together without explaining how they all fit together. Instead, that's left up to the viewer to make up on their own (Hellboy fans will "get it", but even so, it's not well done). This is too much like the Harry Potter movies in that if you didn't read the source material, you're screwed for actually enjoying much of it. I love Hellboy. A lot. But this was not good.
A total shit show, Hellboy goes off the rails without the guiding hand and vision of Guillermo del Toro. In this completely unnecessary reboot Hellboy works to prevent a powerful witch from resurrecting and unleashing an apocalyptic plague upon mankind. Ron Perlman casts a long shadow and David Harbour pales in comparison as the new Hellboy. And, Milla Jovovich is extremely cartoonish and isn’t the least bit threatening as the villain. Yet the script is so bad, it’d be hard for anyone to make it work. But the real problem is tone, everything is just so over-the-top and ridiculous. A raging dumpster fire, Hellboy fails spectacularly.
If Guillermo del Toro’s version of Hellboy is the imaginative grand symphony, this version is the discordant heavy metal little brother. Based on “The Wild Hunt” and “The Storm and the Fury” storylines in the comics doesn’t save it, either.
Lacking the Del Toro’s vision, the character and monster designs are pedantic at best. David Harbour plays the titular infernal hero and while at first the costume design seems grittier than Ron Perlman’s Hellboy, it becomes clear very quickly that, while Perlman became the character and almost seemed to meld with his costume, Harbour seems to be fighting his costume. It’s like watching one of the most uncomfortable and anxiety-ridden wrestling matches one can imagine. I kind of felt sorry for Harbour as he’s a good actor with the right material, but he got handed such terrible material to work with. To his credit, it’s clear that he does try to sell it, but when you’re selling crap, it’s still crap.
The characters come off more as caricatures. Their relationships are so basic and one-dimensional even if they exist that we find that we don’t really care. And that’s the major problem. The stakes aren’t built up enough to make us care. It’s a good versus evil comic-book film and we don’t really care whether the good guys live or if the bad guys win. Making the audience care and identify with the characters should be the bread and butter of “Hellboy.” Instead, we’re given a cracker and told to run along and play.
Don’t bother unless you are a major fan of the comics or the actors and simply HAVE to see it. Even then, you might want to consider steering clear as it could taint your love for these.
it was funny, yes. but the CGI hahah un not so funny!
Can't believe I'm saying this but the gore was excessive for no reason.
Acting was below par and a poor story.
CGI disappointing at many moments.
Imagine they made a Batman movie where Batman is constantly whining/pouting about his lot in life and all the fight scenes were over-layed with nu-metal... That's this but for Hellboy. Hellboy is supposed to be dark and gritty (think Nolan/Bale's Batman) with a very dry sense of humor... While that definitely wasn't the case here, the fight scenes were fun and it was great to see Gruagach and Daimio (though Daimio's CGI was.. not nearly as good as anybody elses?). Glad to have seen it, but still waiting for an actual Hellboy movie. Something more along the lines of what Nolan did with Batman.
I wouldn't say this is a waste of a film but its definitely not worth the hassle watching again. It was alright overall, but I've got more questions than answers from this film.
Don't rely on movies that erase nipples.
Definitely I liked. Nonsense and gore spread all around. Nice visuals and funny.
before i saw it, i thought the critics were all about the new hellboy actor. which is obviously not the case.
A masterpiece of shit. I think all the good writers and screenplays have been destroyed.
This movie has literally redefined "disgusting" for me and brought it to a whole new level. Don't watch it on a full stomach
Despite the bad reviews I still had hopes for the movie. Sadly, the critics were mostly right. Aside from David Harbour as Hellboy, the surrounding cast turned in some pretty terrible performances. The special effects were mediocre at best, and sometimes looked unfinished. The direction was okay, but Marshall is clearly no Del Toro. And that pig thing? Just terrible! It pains me to say but this was disappointing, and it's a pity, as Harbour and Hellboy deserve better.
The gory parts at that level all over the movie was ... unexpected.
Nice trashy-kitschy-mockery, though I'd cut in half each and every action scene. And this piglet-thing, it's just adorable.
I would say, let's just rather make the third one with the original cast and don't count this one. Although some of the things were actually cool like some of the monsters and interiors.
As for music, I would do the same, Beltrami's score is something I still remember to this day!
was okay not bad I feel they could have done a better job.
Kind of like 2015 Fantastic Four, the originals weren't very good but they aren't that bad in comparison to their remakes.
Hellvoy 1 n 2 where good but 3 could of been better
really didn't like the start over or the change of characters.
It have great potencial, and great storyline. But please, ask Guillermo del Toro to come back. With this story he will make much more.
David Harbour is well cast but when you cast poor Milla Jovovich as the villain. You can expect an instant bomb and not so great movie. They might as well got her husband to direct.
Guillermo del Toro last I heard, wanted to make Hellboy 3 but couldn’t get the big budget he wanted. So naturally they rebooted it without him.
The film is more flawed without him. Here Hellboy goes wherever the “hell” he wants. Without hiding in the shadows. While not caring if he is seen.

Ok, I enjoyed the movie quite a lot. Here is why:
It is way closer to the comic!
The Story is totally over the top nonsense, but that's also the source material!
