Other than the bad ratings and even Netflix turning it down even thought they’ve got worse on there.. I went into it with an open mind and to be fair it had It’s cheesy bad moments at times and some bad scripting but also had some good moments that did make me laugh but also if it wasn’t for the surprising good cast it had this movie wouldn’t of solved the case for me. It definitely wasn’t worth the cinema trip and money so glad I had a free ticket ha
The cast are great, but the script was awful. Embarrassing in parts, few laughs, we got the impression that the writers spent time coming up with a list of wank jokes and then just threw them at the script.
I really wanted to like it....
I'm a Will Farrell and John C. Reilly fan and this was hard to watch. I fell asleep half way thru and I was so glad when it was done. They just tried way to hard on this one. The movie itself was really bad. Not even they could save this movie. Save your money.
Not even John C. Reilly could save this.
Well... at least a bunch of people got paychecks.
Quite possibly the worst film I have ever seen. Avoid it like the plague.
If you watch it in black & white, it looks even more like a Three Stooges episode: Two Stooges.
I had such high expectations for this film... But alas... I literally only laughed about 5 times.. Such a let down.
SIXTY ONE PEOPLE RATED THIS MOVIE A 10/10.
This movie is no Stepbrothers but despite the bad reviews I thought is was funny. Many hits on the BBC but I liked the movie. I found it funny.
Just bad. Really really bad....
This movie is a real bummer all around. Look, if you're a fan of the cast there are laughs to be had. I definitely laughed during a handful of parts. But this movie is baaaaad. Kind of embarrassing. It's a shame too because there are some good gags wasted on this movie, in particular one at the very end of the movie. Such a waste.
Believe me I tired a lot, but not funny at all!
Pure dribble. Hollywood has been dead for years.
Holmes & Watson is a comedic take on Arthur Conan Doyle's classic detective stories, featuring Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. Written and directed by Etan Cohen, the film is widely considered one of the biggest flops of 2018. The movie has been criticized for its poor slapstick humor, sexual innuendo and a lack of chemistry between the lead actors Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. The cast, which includes Kelly Macdonald, Rebecca Hall, Ralph Fiennes, Steve Coogan, Hugh Laurie, Pam Ferris and Rob Brydon, are also said to be wasted in this poorly written script. The story takes place in 1881 London and follows Watson as he meets and befriends Holmes, becoming his assistant and later moving in together to become the ultimate crime-solving duo. However, the film fails to live up to the humor and storytelling of previous adaptations and is criticized for its inconsistent and anachronistic portrayal of Victorian London. Overall, it's a movie best avoided by both fans of the original stories and comedy lovers.
No. Just no. Any more words would just be a waste, just like this movie.
The absolute worst Dumb and Dumber and Sherlock Holmes crossover in movie history. Hopefully, also the only one.
This is one of the most insightful and thought provoking renditions of the Sherlock Holmes novella.
It had me riveted to my seat. So witty and smart, you just can't tell where the plot will turn.
A true masterpiece of the 21st century
I don't figure how a so high-level cast has been involved to make this demential movie which doesn't deserve it at all.
The Five Emojis of Holmes & Watson

The period look is good and the best parts of the film are the ones that put a twist on our expectations of the era. Those moments are unfortunately few and far between.
Steve Coogan is the only memorable character in a criminally small part; he would have made a wonderdul villain.
:frowning2:
Terrible British accents from two American comedians. It really kills what little enjoyment there is in Will Ferrell's and John C. Reilly's performances.
The film shamelessly copies from better Sherlock adaptations, such as the competent Robert Downey Jr. films.
Holmes & Watson plays on stereotypes in the wrong ways, which makes many jokes feel incredibly offensive. Things such as Holmes' eccentricity and Watson's PTSD are poorly handled.
Why the hell are two wannabe British stars surrounded by loads of actual British actors in lacklustre perfromances?
Why the hell was Ralph Fiennes cast in a waste of part? And how the hell did he have guts to accept this rubbish? The same applies for the talented Hugh Laurie, completely wasted here.
:face_vomiting:
Will Ferrell is a terrible choice for Sherlock and his characterization is far form the typical one. He is way out of character in every single scene, and the new, supposedly funnt dimensions he brings to the part really don't fit the character at all. Reilly is even worse as Watson.
Chaotic comedic scenes ruin both the story progression and the characterizations.
The comedy sinks below the belt way too fast and at that point nothing can save the movie. The jokes that aren't about sex and poop are otherwise stupid, tasteless and unoriginal.
The scenes with just Holmes and Watson are the most frustrating, annoying and irrelevant, with the worst lines and the worst kind of slapstick comedy.
So many gross and completely useless scenes that don't develop the story or the character and are difficult to watch. They kill the vibe this movie is trying to create.
That musical part towards the end is unnecessary and certainly doesnt add any value to the film.
The twisty investigation could be a great driving force behind the film if it was interesting or actually made any sense.
Sherlock goes from a man with a big ego to an emotional and useless wreck and back to the ego. That's the greatest character development I've ever come across.
This is not only one of the worst Sherlock Holmes adaptations ever put to the silver screen, it's also one of the worst comedies I have ever watched.
The Final Emoji: :face_vomiting:
Ferrell, Watson, Coogan...what could possibly go wrong? Well, despite my love of each of these actors, the film was very underwhelming. I wouldn't say it was awful - there were the occasional funny moments - but there were entire stretches with nary a smile or a chuckle., which was down to the lacklustre script rather than the acting talent involved. A shame as this could have been so much better.
I feel there was a great meeting where these guys riffed on sherlock & that unfortunately meant getting some 12 yr olds to then write a full length movie script.
When these guys do so many hilarious movies they're bound to have a miss here and there, this is one
Decent talent involved,
"it's Billy Zane" is the only thing that made me laugh, but after 80 minutes of pretty much silence, I feel like I laughed too much as a relief that something funny happened.
*most annoying thing - Watson mistaking that the queen was dead when simply knocked out.
What an awful film. Avoid.
I really cant understand how bad this movie is picked to pieces. Of course its silly and full of cringy jokes what did you expect? The story istn so bad at all - at least it follows a simple and easy line and its not confusing. I thought i would watch the disappointment of the year, but no, i enjoyed it more than i would have imagined. Its not great, but its fairly good.
And i really would like to see Holmes & Watson in America.
was not satisfied with this movie!!
it was a complete disappointment but had a few funny moments.
Absolute garbage. Couldn't get past the first 15 minutes. Such a pity as I was looking forward to seeing this.
ok so, this ain't a review as much as it is a comment cause i haven't and won't see this. But, Etan Cohen?? really? couldn't you afford a less clickbaity name? you didn't even try! you just moved the "h"! c'mon Ethan Coen for god's sake...
As a fan of mystery stories, I decided to check out Holmes & Watson.
To be honest, I didn't think much of it. It's a comedy, so it relies a lot on the film's sense of humour aligning with the viewer's. Sadly, I didn't find it particularly funny. But there was a lot of laughing coming from the audience, so I suppose it works for some people.

I read plenty of bad reviews about this movie, but still gave it a shot -what do they know - right?
Well apparently they don't know a funny movie when they see it.
There were laughs all the way through and the visual gags were pretty good too. It's silly, funny and exactly what you expect when Will Ferrell and John C Reily get together. both have been in a couple of stinkers lately, but this is NOT one of them. 9 out of 10.
