Another movie based on a youth/young adult book with the same problems other have. On the plus side there is the beautiful and brilliant Saorsie and great cinematography.
But...
The story is full of holes and logical lapses. Why the attack ? Was it a war or terrorists ? The timeline is incomprehensible. How much time has past from the beginning to the end of the movie. Days ? Weeks ? Months ? If this was supposed to be a World War it was the shortest one in history. .
The story in general is too convenient. Daisy hasn`t reached her destination yet when she already sees the boy she´s going to fall in love with who coincidentally is the only guy her age. And of course he´s going to fall for her to. And the moment she begins to change her attitude the war starts so everything changes for them. I don´t think a government would draw young boys to war by force but they are seperated and in typical love-conquers-all fashion Daisy tries everything to get back. But since the whole thing is directed at a younger audience, young girls especially, it might be my over analysing adult mind that´s dissatisfied.
Based on an acclaimed novel, How I Live Now is a wartime coming of age tale. The story follows a young girl sent to live with relatives in England where she falls in love; but when she and her lover are separated by war she’s forced to grow up fast. Saoirse Ronan leads the cast, but overall the performances are weak. And, the plot is poorly paced with some strange uses of voice over. How I Live Now has some interesting things to say about surviving war, but it’s not done very effectively.
I really hate it when people make a meal out of hating a movie. It's usually condescending and they act like they're the smartest person in the world for not liking one particular movie, and it always makes me roll my eyes.
Having said that. Absolutely fuck this movie.
It's terribly written, directed, and edited. It jumps from one horribly ""edgy""ù dark scenario to the next. From the murder of a drunk child, to needless sexual assault where the women are abandoned, to yet another dead child, to several instances of incest cousin fucking that you're supposed to think is nice?
The overarching ""doomsday""ù plot is intentionally vague and never explained, but that doesn't work when every single character is completely uninteresting, undeveloped, and forgettable.
Also. The small gesture that makes a character fall in love with their cousin is the weirdest, least romantic shit I've ever seen. The only acceptable response to that kind of behavior is ""what the fuck are you doing? Stop that""ù. I LEGITIMATELY thought there was going to be a vampire subplot for a second. But there wasn't. They just thought it was romantic.
This movie is vile. And it wasn't worth the battery it drained from my girlfriend's phone. I reserve bad movies like this for watching on flights like I just did with this one. But still, holy shit.
Una chica estadounidense llega a pasar el verano con sus primos en apartada comunidad inglesa. Sus primos son unos salvajes, libres, locos y desordenados, descuidados por su madre que está ocupada con su trabajo. La adolescente deberá lidiar con los problemas propios de los peces fuera del agua además de los constantes reproches que se hace así misma... en medio de la Tercera Guerra Mundial. No he leído la novela, ni buscado en la Wikipedia, pero parece la Tercera Guerra Mundial. No abundan mucho en los acontecimientos de manera puntual y eso me gusta. Los espectadores tenemos la misma visión y conocimientos escasos de lo que pasa allá afuera, compartimos la visión de los personajes. Siempre me he resultado interesante las historias en corto. Los dramas locales que se generan en los marginales de la Historia Universal.
Daisy deberá de adaptarse a un mundo para el que piensa que no está hecha. Un dispositivo nuclear ha estallado y todo se ha venido abajo. Se queda sola con sus sobrinos, deberá de hacerse responsable de ello de alguna manera, esa súbita responsabilidad y el naciente amor por el mayor de los hermanos la hacen rechazar el rescate que le ofrece la embajada estadounidense. Decide quedarse. Las cosas, como es de esperarse, continúan empeorando. Los recurso naturales de han contaminado, no hay energía eléctrica y comienzan a evacuar la zona en la que se encuentran. Deciden continuar su vida, libres y locos. Al fin la fuerza del gobierno los alcanza y separa. Hay granjas de trabajo forzado y colectivo, son llevados a familias sustitutas y reclutados por fuerzas militares autoritarias. ¿Cómo conservar la esperanza en un mundo así?
El amor todo lo puede, puede hacer que tomemos las decisiones equivocadas o las correctas según se vea. De eso se trata la película. De la esperanza, el heroísmo y de no perder la fe. Tiene un final feliz que no desentona con la trama, después de todo es lo que uno espera, que les vaya bien a los personajes, ¿no?
Es una bueno opción de película romántica adolescente.

This movie has to offer two things in it's favor: a different, and surprisingly dark perspective on war, and Saoirse Ronan, who is as brilliant as ever. But the total lack of the big picture is problematic sometimes, even when I understand it's purpose to get the viewer into the perspective of the protagonist. It also has big parts that feel like your average first love teen drama (that's rated R).
