Mike Flanagan is an incredibly talented horror director but this film, whilst competently made, is (whisper it) boring and familiar.

A deaf writer in a secluded area finds herself fighting for her life against a killer who likes to play head games with his victims.
Hush is a well made edge of your seat thriller. Kate Siegel is excellent especially. The only weak thing about it is the killer. While he is perfectly played by John Gallagher Jr. as a real scum bag. We don't get much answers about him other then he is there and he is dangerous.
Still, Hush is one of the best survival films you could watch. If you liked You're Next; you should definitely check out Hush.

A real nail biter, edge of your seat survival thriller movie. Brilliant performance by Kate Siegel!
I love how Maddie wasn't saved by anyone but herself. How much balls she had, truly badass and clever thinking. Though she had two earlier windows to kill her attacker, still, fierce, badass woman with true survival instincts kicking in.

It's a game of cat and mouse, but while it proceeds as expected in the grand scheme - killer stalking a victim who tries to stay a step ahead - the thrills are in the details.

loading replies

They mentioned her being both deaf and mute, but they forgot to mention that she also suffers from "really fucking stupid-itus" too!

Absolute waste of time. Pure trash. It should not exist. It should never have been made.

My wife and I were hooked in the first few minutes, as is usual with horror movies. But then we started laughing at how bad this movie was.

The story makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Everything that happens in the movie can be summed up as "a 1st grader would think of something better".

The budget of this movie would have been better spent on McDonalds.

The description does not mention she has an IQ of 40 or less

Absolutely terrifying, Hush is an intense and frightening indie horror thriller. The story follows a deaf woman who lives in a secluded house in the woods, and is preyed upon by a psychopathic killer. The script is especially well-written, doing an impressive job at having the character work her way through the problems that she faces. And, making the character deaf gives a fresh new angle to the classic cabin in the woods scenario; heightening the tension and suspense. Lead actress Kate Siegel gives an incredibly visceral performance that captures the raw terror and desperation of the character, and director Mike Flanagan does a good job at showing how trapped and isolated she is. Additionally, the violence is remarkably gritty without being gratuitous. A well-crafted horror film, Hush taps into our primal fears.

I'm genuinely blown away. Katie Siegel actually wrote this?! WOW!

"Hush" is just incredible. I was biting my nails all the way through, the tension is fucking insane and the use of sounds/silence is spectacular to help building up, and keeping up this same tension. I'm so glad movies like this are helping keep a whole genre alive.

Katie is amazing. She's so expressive and I only noticed this one thing about her now. John Gallagher Jr.'s portrail of the killer is just hideous - exactly how it should be. Props to Mike Flanagan on the excelent direction, props to the cat for being a cute cat.

Imagine a storyline written so badly, that even 80 minutes of runtime bore you to deaf. Pun intended.

One of the better slasher films I've seen in a while. The aspect of it is unique, as well as the masked man's personality, it's what makes it different to the usual films we're all so bored of. Both main characters make some good and some bad choices, which is unusual, as you only usually see the killer going into houses so easily and finding the victims hiding places despite never even being there before or being familiar with the grounds. It's one of the most realistic slashers I've seen, something easy but fun to watch that you don't have to think too much about but that will leave a positive impression on you.

Very suspenseful with an awesome plot line that keeps you guessing whether it's all real or something else.

loading replies

back to back predictable scenes, average story

loading replies

So we waste like one hour and a half and end up not getting any sort of motive or anything.not that it was awful, but the jump scares and silenced to force the nervousness in the plot were just... eh.

It came with an extremely original idea. The idea itself was fairly decently executed, though I can't really say that it was perfect and it had no room for improvement. Just the opposite. Too brutal, too unbelievable sometimes, overall, though, a very decent movie with great performances and an interesting plot-twist that cannot be found in every other horror movie. But it would be a lie if I said that it was the most brilliant and most innovative idea in the history of movie production. There may not have been many but it certainly wasn't the first one to come with the whole mute-deaf character situation.

This one didn't live up to the hype, IMO, but home invasion movies almost never bug me. I thought it was a well-done film though. I can see how someone with different fears would be very spooked afterward. The pace is steady throughout the whole film but the conclusion was anticlimatic. 7.5/10 stars.

I enjoy watching a —thriller— movie that doesn't take easy way outs, and treats its viewer with respect. I don't know if it's as original as it looks, but it definitely felt fresh.

Solid concept film, doesn’t overstay its welcome. Did some neat things with the conceit, could’ve done more. Good performances from the two leads. It’s kind of refreshing to have a Flanagan work this simple and straightforward.

This is such and effectively simple movie. One of my all time favourites

loading replies

not bad, but it bored me aswell.

loading replies

Definitely a suspenseful movie that my wife and I really enjoyed watching.

It may not have been the most unique horror film ever, but it was a competent and well-made film that exemplifies the horror genre well. I may have had to suspend my disbelief for a few moments, but this did not diminish my engagement with the film. All I can say is that I liked the ending, and the journey towards it was fun to watch. May not be a masterpiece, but it certainly is a well-made film to watch at night.

Hush is a well-known example of a film that urges you to put your head down and rest. If you don't look too carefully, you might be able to enjoy

loading replies

a masterpiece. katie siegel's acting was incredible

My comment isn’t relevant to anyone except family and friends.

Watched this originally with my beautiful daughter Shannon :cherry_blossom: Date unknown #forever20

Very, very paint by the numbers. But at least that means they didn't do anything stupid. What I liked most was that the killer was a complete moron. Real serial killers usually are. So this was nice to see instead of the usual Hollywood genius serial killer stuff. Whatever, it was fine.

Turns the main character's disadvantages into an advantage against the killer, amazing and original, uses sound to create suspense and change perspective, & great continuity throughout the entire story (things don't show up so often that it beats you over the head with that item's importance- just enough to know that that item exist in the terrain of the film)

I didn't like this film, it was really boring in my opinion. It's pretty forgettable as well, except for the ending. I did enjoy the ending. Overall, a boring film with a decent ending.

the story at first was kinda promising but then everything went downhill and so many things just not adding up!

Bit of a slow burner but turned out pretty enjoyable. I rooted for the cat.

Why didn't she get a CI? She's perfectly for that because she heard until 13 and her hearing nerves should be intact after a meningitis or am I wrong? But well, than they couldn't have made that movie ^_^

loading replies

An interesting movie but kinda boring. I wish they would of leaned more into sound and her being deaf in the second half. Still it is a decent watch if you want to see a different take on a home invasion horror.

loading replies

Scénario vraiment décevant sans aucune originalité, tueur qui tue, on ignore tout de sa raison. Déroulement et dénouement on ne peut plus banal, bref, un film sans intérêt.

loading replies

The film was entertaining, but it lacked many things.

I forgot when was the last time I watched a horror movie. Are horror movies nowadays supposed to be that slow?

[sarcastically] Why he keeps going around the house, looking and tapping the windows instead of breaking the glasses with the bow? What's the point of doing that if he knew she can't hear anything?

I won't say the movie was great but it wasn't too bad. It must be difficult to act for the crying without a sound and scare without a scream.

Film che ha un'ottima trama ma che viene sviluppato male risultando noioso e pesante. Sconsigliato da vedere scende veramente lentamente

No fucking way she had the strength to stab him at the end, lol. A dumb thriller.

They could have explored her deafness a little more.

I pretty much agree with @faithful. The movie has some competent scenes and tries to subvert certain tropes but it's far from perfect.
The main selling point is that the victim is deaf and as such is vulnerable to his shenanigans but it wasn't utilized to the extend I'd wanted - be it technical or plot wise. I have to give props to Kate Siegel though as her acting was on point.
I could rate this movie a 3 or a 4 as it is riddled with unbelievable events (and the key competent was too obvious) but neglecting that I was still entertained.
Hopefully Netflix grabs horror movies more often now so they're quicker out of the festival runs :).
