I Am Sam 2001

I Am Sam... I just can't get enough of this tear jerking beautiful film, it just keeps on getting better every time i watch it.. The fathers love for his child is everlasting... I disagree on the law in this film, does make me angry.. it happens in the real world and it's cruel in my opinion.. everything about this film is great, the sound track, the picture, the story plot, the script, and not forgetting the cast that made it what it was.. I love Sean Penn, and this is gotta to be for me his best performance... this is a film to watch before you die... beautiful..

This is a warmhearted, feel good movie. The acting is good - Sean Penn does his best work here. Dakota Fanning is irresistibly sweet as a 7 year old. Great supporting cast. Wonderful moments. It's a "suspend your disbelief" movie for cynics. I enjoyed watching it again, and give it a 7 (good) out of 10.

I can't speak to the negative (or positive) aspects of the representation in this movie, so I'm just going to ignore that whole conversation. All I can do is comment on how it landed with me, someone who doesn't have any skin in the game and was just watching it as a movie. Overall, I thought Sean Penn's performance was compelling and the central relationship between Sam and Lucy landed enough emotional beats to carry the film. The story understandably dodges any real conversation surrounding Lucy's conception or some of the practicalities of how Sam raised Lucy for the first 7 years, but they glossed over it efficiently enough that it doesn't really detract. What does detract is Michelle Pfeiffer's character, which often feels superficial and melodramatic, especially toward the end.

Cast performances and directing, as well as the cinematography are simply great. One of my favorite films.

I remember watching this as a kid and being moved by it, and by Penn's performance. Seeing it now as an adult it's incredible how exploitative this award-bait movie was.

The whole purpose of the movie was to just use disability as a heart-tug tactic without any authenticity to the characters, and the plot was contrived at best and nonsensical at worst. The direction was godawful, though. From the style of direction to the directorial choices made throughout the movie, it was just a shitfest.

I feel bad for everybody involved in the making of this turd.
