Offbeat comedy thriller is enjoyable to watch, helped in part by its unusual characters and off the wall dialogue.
I don't think there is anything particularly special about this indie. The two leads are enjoyable especially Elijah Wood who is very funny. The tone is very inconsistent and gets a little too serious in the finale, but its an enjoyable Netflix watch.
This is Macon Blair's directorial debut. Given he produced and starred in 'Green Room' and 'Blue Ruin' I was really keen to see what he could do.
The problem with this film is that it isn't quite sure what it wants to be. It's too funny to be a thriller, and it has to many serious elements to be a full out comedy. Therefore it ends up being a mish mash of both. It's a bit like a Ben Wheatley black comedy co-written by Edgar Wright. While that might sound appealing it just doesn't click with me because it gets it a bit wrong, especially in the final act.
I really liked Elijah Wood's character and I was totally on board with what the film was actually trying to tell me, it just didn't pull it off very well.
Blair is still one to watch though I feel. 6/10
Great debut from Macon Blair! The film is fun, quirky and sometimes even a bit dark and bloody, but never exaggerated. Worth your time.
Damn I didn't expect this to get so serious. What seemed like a standard tragicomedy took a really dark turn and gave Fargo/Tarantino vibes near the end.
SPOILER:
I'm so glad Tony survived omg and I loved what they did with the smoke to make us think that he didn't XD
this might be the funniest film of 2017. all the cast and characters are really great too.
i had a lot of fun watching this.
Decent but not nearly worth all of the praise that it received
Jeremy Saulnier and Macon Blair are fantastic filmmakers. I can't wait for whatever they are doing next.
Totally unpredictable and absolutely brilliant. Can't recommend this one highly enough.
Elijah Wood picks the most esoteric roles these days. I chose to see the movie for three things. Him, Rose from Two and Half Men and the strange long winding title of the film.
This film is on the boundary of multiple genres. It is comedy, drama and a bit of a thriller. The movie wanted to do a lot and it was successful for me at least. The benefit of being on the boundary is that I could not guess which genre it would pick next and how committed it would be to that genre.
Ruth is a disgruntled nurse. She is just not happy with how carelessly people around her live. One day she comes back from the hospital, she finds her house is broken into and her grandmothers silverware is missing along with her laptop. Police aren't much of a help and so she starts to investigate a bit.
The way it starts and the way it ends are very different. It is a tale of someone fed up with the world, but not like Danny from Beef. She has not reached a point of ending it all, she has a little spark of retaliation left in her and the break-in fans the flames, especially after the Police refuse to take any action.
Elijah Wood is brilliant to watch. A little dreamy, self-absorbed, but not someone with malice. It was a pleasure to see his character traits coming to light bit by bit. He was brilliant at throwing stars as well. ;)
The movie takes in strange trajectory as it moves and I sometimes question the why of it, but in the end, I was never left disappointed.
Quirky comedy / thriller. Well worth a watch :thumbsup_tone1:
It' was okay. Entertaining with a few funny moments. Imagine Napoleon Dynamite meets Death Wish. but less funny.
A really enjoyable distant relative of Falling Down with strong Fargoesque overtones. Starts super slow and gradually taking up pace to a catarthic finish. Full of hilarious moments - the center of which most often is the perfectly cast 'urban ninja' character played by Elijah Woods. Has maybe the most disturbing toilet scene I have ever seen in a movie...
This is a delightfully odd, quirky, surprisingly funny movie. I don't think you'll regret watching it.
How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!
This movie was ok had some very good scenes but also stupid ones :D
Good movie with a excelent combination of comedy with agro. I really enjoyed watch it but I feel something is missing. Deserving a price in Sundance is cuestionable.
splatter scadente splatter scadente splatter scadente
Very unique movie, with a good mix of genres. The characters and the story were nice. The directing was a bit sloppy at times though.

Fun, light hearted yet darkish buddy movie with good dialogue. The beginning is a bit slow and a few scenes are weak but it really picks up 1/3 into the movie and the last 30 minutes are great. “Have you ever eaten cat meat?”… hilarious!
