“We're reviving a cancelled undercover police program from the '80s and revamping it for modern times. See, the guys in charge of this stuff lack creativity and are completely out of ideas. So all they do now is recycle shit from the past, and hope that nobody notices.”
       ― Capt. Hardy, '21 Jump Street' (2012)

A collection of films wherein things become either mildly self-aware, or crazily self-referential.

Many of these films are aware that they are films, and the very act of movie-making (or movie-watching) is factored into the experience, or coded into the narrative.

“It’s a war within yourself that never goes away.”
― Luis Montalvan, 'Buried Above Ground' (2015)

While the diagnosis of PTSD did not exist until the early 1980s, filmmakers have been exploring the horrifying and detrimental impact of psychological trauma for decades.

Moral injury is closely related, but refers to an injury to an individual's moral conscience as a result of a perceived transgression which produces profound emotional distress.

In the arena of the sports movie, every story can be told. The impossible underdog team that survived a brutal season into the final game. The kid who’s just starting out or the veteran pulled back into the game, who both share the same odds: Against. Stories of the power of coming together as a cohesive, selfless unit, and tales of individual strength when all limits have been removed. Sports movies make us cheer, laugh, cry, and scream. They even make us think about renewing that gym membership.

We’re going all the way to the end zone with our list of the 130 Best Sports Movies of All Time, sorted by Adjusted Tomatometer from at least 25 reviews each. Just about every sport ever played is here: football (Rudy), baseball (Bull Durham), hockey (Miracle), soccer (Bend It Like Beckham), boxing (Rocky), ice skating (I, Tonya). There’s racing: by foot (Without Limits), by car (Talladega Nights), and by horse (Seabiscuit). We got fictional sports (Rollerball) and sports we made up through sheer tyranny of will (Murderball). If it’s in the spirit of competition, it’s in this list. Except for sculling. Sorry, Nic.

Because this is a Best Sports Movie list, there are no TV movies (we pour one out for Brian’s Song), and nothing rated Rotten — even fan favorites like The Sandlot or Any Given Sunday. Please deal with your rage accordingly before continuing.

Ready?

For the leisure, life, and love of the game, here are the 130 Best Sports Movies of All Time!

Below is our updated running tally of the films most frequently mentioned by individual critics on the year-end Top Ten lists. Note that if a critic ranks more than the standard 10 films, we will not include films ranked 11th or worse. (We do include unranked lists of 11-20 titles, though each film gets just one-half of a point.) In case of a tie for first or second, each film will receive the full points for that position.
