A bottle? Such a gem of a movie!!
By far, one of the best movies I've ever seen! I don't remember when it was the last time I had so much fun seeing a dog on the screen.
Crime does not pay but it sure can be incredibly entertaining until it all gies south. Fantastic acting and a deep study of how each character deals with and attempts to justify their actions. It's rare that anti heroes or even straight up black color (I'm not sure that's the proper terminology) criminals meet with a realistic end and even though it's completely warranted, it really pulls on the heart strings and is goddamn sad.
Billed as a black comedy, this story of two stir-crazy Irish hitmen on the lam in Belgium could just as easily fall into any one of a dozen other genres. With traces of humor, suspense, romance, action and drama all stirred into the same bubbling pot, the risk is certainly there for overexertion, but the finished product doesn't fall short in any instance. The comedy is sharply witty and well-timed, the action fast-paced and fiery, the romance heartfelt but not heavy.
Colin Farrell, whose eyebrows migrate around his forehead like a pair of pitch black caterpillars on acid, works a good range of emotions out of his fairly simple leading role and cleanly manages to get us rooting for him by the time the closing scenes roll around. Upon reflection, there really isn't all that much to the story - it's predictable at worst, minimal at best - but there doesn't need to be. A perfectly efficient, enjoyable, versatile little slice of the wild life.
Not as funny as Reddit told me.
Stupid and pointless movie. I feel like I've wasted my time.
I honestly expected something more. With all the praise I heard about this movie, I can't help but feel a little disappointed.
It has a mix of drama, action and dark humor; but I feel none of these elements really excel. While the premise is interesting, the way the story developed frankly bored me. I liked the melancholy overtone, but 1 hour and 40 minutes of runtime felt really long.
The cast was good; they all performed well and gave the necessary depth to their respective characters.
In the end, it is a missed opportunity, at least for me. Maybe with a slightly faster pace, I would have enjoyed it more.
6,5/10
Watched this again to confirm that I loved it. Turns out I totally do. Decided to commit to the Netflix send after watching The Guard, another Gleeson flick with this director. Between this and that, he's got a real style and mood to his films. What else has he done since The Guard? (After a quick google...) Seven Psychopaths?!?! I love that movie too! Who is this guy?! That's 3 great movies. When's his next one? Also I need to rewatch that one. Adding it to the list.
A Unique film, with the perfect mix of dark comedy and drama, along with a perfectly-paced and unpredictable plot.
This was sooooo boring. I regret watching it.
It's a fairytale fucking town, isn't it? How can a fairytale town not be somebody's fucking thing? How can all those canals, and bridges, and cobbled streets, and those churches, and all that beautiful fucking fairytale stuff, how can that not be somebody's fucking thing, eh?
It's like a fucking fairytale or something.
Absolutely amazing. 2 of the best actors playing off each other. Story is good. Conversations are entertaining. Perfect movie in my eyes.
Nobody should poke Mr. Ralph Fiennes's forehead ever!
A masterpiece of dark comedy and a personal favourite.
Snappy dialogue, excellent chemistry, great acting and a setting so sublime it's like a PR stunt for Bruges.
I actually visited because of this movie and can confirm that everything Gleeson says about the town is factual.
I knew I was awake but it felt like I was in a dream.
Dark comedy, great dialogue, fantastic setting, but not what you'd expect.
Maybe it's cause I'm Dutch, but I liked this movie very much! Great humor, fun plot.
"What's a fifty year old lollipop man doing knowing fucking karate? What was he? A Chinese lollipop man?"
"I saw your midget today. Little prick didn't even say hello."
"You can't sell horse tranquillisers to a midget."
"That's for John Lennon, you yankee fucking cunt."
"Exactly at what point was it that all skinheads suddenly became poofs? Used to be you were a skinhead, you just went around beating up Pakistani twelve year olds. now it seems to be a prerequisite to be a fucking bum boy."
HE KARATE CHOPPED THE DWARF I CAN'T BREATHE THIS FILM IS ART
"YOU'RE AN INANIMATE FUCKING OBJECT!"
"I'm sorry for calling you an inanimate object. I was upset."
This film is a delight.
"I really, really hoped I wouldn't die."
This is a really good film that is funny but also battles some serious issues, it's one of those movies that has a very subtle but big influence also Colin Farrell is electric on screen.
This is just a fun movie, I'd watch again in a heartbeat.
In Bruges and Banshee both Farrell plays a child at heart, but the way he approaches them is so different while still having this aching naivety and earnest wounded desire for connection. Here he’s more of a pouty, angsty teen lashing out cynically, while in Banshee he’s a lad just trying to see the bright side of things and hang with his mate. Despite some of the things he says, despite his very profession and the lives he took, including a child, you can’t help but feel for him.
Ken and Harry too are achingly human. That’s what both films show. The ache of being a person, whether it’s from your past actions or what someone you loved is doing to you. You have to live with the ache.
In Bruges is a fun film. There are a couple bad writing points that keep it from being truly great, but the story is original, comical, and entertaining. Colin Farrell shines.
Not the comedy i was expecting. More amusing than funny.
But it had an a very nice tone and the characterisation of the main players was far more interesting than the average movie about hitmen.
Don’t think i would rewatch it but i enjoyed it for as long as it lasted.
6.5/10
Perfect mix of drama, comedy, action, and emotion with exceptional performances from Colin Farrell & Brendan Gleeson.
Not for me.
It's amazingly shot, well performed, and spiced with dark humor and while I appreciate the work of this film, it was too slow-paced for me and the payoff was not worth the wait.
5/10 - Average film, would rewatch if suggested
Better than I expected, it has good characterisation for all the leads, great acting from them too, with a few bits of derisive dialogue that spoils what was otherwise an enjoyable stay in Bruges.
A well-crafted film, In Bruges rises above the stereotypes that are typical of the gangster genre. The story follows two English hitmen who are sent to hide out in Bruges, Belgium for the holidays after they botched a hit. Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, and Ralph Fiennes form a great cast and gives first rate performances that bring the audience into the lives of the characters. And, the writing is particularly good; striking the right balance between action and the mundane. However, the violence is a little too graphic at times and detracts from the film. In Bruges has some flaws, but overall it’s a fun and entertaining black comedy with interesting and compelling characters.
From the director of Seven Psychopaths and The Guard. This was a fantastic drama/dark comedy about a couple of hit men struggling with morality. Great watch.
Esto es humor negro del bueno!!

This film is great! The film is about two hitmen hiding out in Bruges, awaiting orders from their employer. Things happen that I'm not going to explain because it would spoil the movie, but I will say that the movie's very entertaining and it has a good sense of dark humor. There are some action-thriller elements to it, but it's mostly a comedy. And how refreshing it is to see a comedy that doesn't completely do away with the idea of consequence. The two main characters have an entertaining contrast and they work very well together comedically. Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson do very well to play their characters and both can provide a variety of dimensions to the characters in specific scenes. I had no idea who was actually in this movie, so when I saw that ONE actor suddenly appear I was extremely delighted and impressed. An extremely well-written film with plot twists and turns that you will not see coming with plenty of intelligent humour and some dumb humour along the way to make this a very entertaining ride. Like I said, I don't want to spoil too much, so I'm just going to leave it at that and say you should check it out!
