A damn fine story. It's not about the whale but about the will of man. I enjoyed it very much and hope you will also.
I liked the movie but why did they use a green tint? Very strange.
I recently watched "The Revenant", another Man vs. Nature film also set in the 1820s. If that film and "In The Heart Of The Sea" have showed me anything it's that I'm thrilled that I didn't have to live during that period of time. Both films do a very good job of highlighting Man's helplessness against the world without his tools. I think the same thing holds true today, it's just that it would take a bit longer for Nature to win in the 2010s. But make no mistake, she'd win.
"In The Heart Of The Sea" was not what I expected, which was a story about amazing heroism and bravery. Instead, this morphed into a tale of survival, complete with some disgusting do-it-or-die actions by the crew of the Essex.
This was a letdown from a visual perspective. All of the scenes just screamed CGI. And casting Chris Hemsworth and Cillian Murphy as the main characters felt entirely wrong.
An admission here...I've never read "Moby Dick" so I have no idea how closely this movie follows the book. I was continually surprised by where the film went, though. The tone got very desperate and downright depressing. The impression I had was that this would be a breathless, sea mist in the face, hearty tale of a battle against a mighty beast. That's not how it went at all.
I wouldn't get too excited for the movie. It isn't what is advertised as (at least that's my reaction after watching it). The whale isn't really the plot of the movie. It's more about the hard way of living of the whalers, the trouble they had surviving, etc. 2/3s of the movie were kinda boring to me. The actors did fine but the characters they portrait don't have too much to care for. Overall it was pretty disappointing to me.

I heard this was supposed to be a "true story." However, I've seen commentaries/semi-documentaries that question the validity of this story. Some even question whether or not the actual size of Moby was exaggerated. I felt that this movie was fair quality. I manage to watch this in 3D, and while there was some good scenes, I expected more special effects. I guess perhaps there is very little you can do, when you have several men literally living in a tiny *ss boat. :laughing: Watch this movie if you just want to see Chris Hemsworth hot body. Other than that, don't expect too much.
We need a Moby Dick near Japan and China Sea to protect the whales (and dolphins) over there, a Whale Avenger!
They said it's fact based movie, and guess what? It is not even bad. + 1 that this time the "monster" wins, it rarely happens, especially when the "hero" commands the action. ;)

So I've just seen In the Heart of the Sea and it very disappointing. It was one of my most anticipated movie of December right next to Star wars, The Revenant and The Hateful Eight, but sadly it didn't live up to my expectations as much as I wanted it to. The trailer for the movie completely lied to us just like most trailers today, I mean the whale itself shows ups a couple of times in the movie and we stuck with characters that we don't care about.
Ron Howard can be a mix bag sometimes when it comes to his movies. Some are good, some are in the middle and some bad. But I still think he's a great director that can really bring a well crafted and brilliantly directed movie. While I thought Rush (the 2013 film with Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl) was a solid movie, but it's not the type of movie I'll be re watching any time soon, but still I think it's a well directed movie and it showed that Ron Howard still got it when it comes to film making. And here he's still got that unique film making quality in him and I think he did a good job of making the audiences feel really small, and it's not just because of the whale that makes you feel small but the sea itself. But I feel like he really lost himself mid way through the movie, as he really lost it's touch. The directing was good, just not brilliant as I wanted it to be.
Chris Hemsworth was really good in this movie and this is the role that he really went for it. If you haven't heard about the shocking weight loss that he did just for the movie and that's what I call dedication right there. The same thing can be said about the rest of the cast. Hemsworth's accent dose go off and on quite often, but overall all the performances from everyone were good.
The movie is basically a man vs nature type of movie which is my favorite part of the movie by far.
Now for the problems: I did not give a crap about any of these characters and that's a big problem. The characters are so bland, so dull and quite unlikable. Nothing is development with the characters and the only time that I actually cared for them is around the third act. The writers try to make us care for Hemsworth character just by adding in the most cliche thing that any screenwriter can writer to his character and that's having are main hero have a pregnant wife who's at home, so he fights for survival to get back to her, but do the writers know that makes the character more basic, unoriginal and cliche. That's not going to make me automatically like the guy.
The visual effect's was another thing that was so disappointing to me, because the effect's were very noticeable at times and it's mostly the CG background. The effect's on the whale looked great but the effects for everything else was pretty bad and quite disappointing, since effect's today should be getting better right now, but then again, I said the same thing about Transformers 4 and Fant4stic.
Overall rating: In the Heart of the Sea was very disappointing and it could have easily been great. The characters are dull, the effect's are noticeable, it's slow at times and the cinematography doesn't quite have that epic scope that the movie wants.
I cheered for the whale :woman_shrugging: Felt no emotional connection to any of the characters.

interesting and exceptional from start to finish. The story is contagious with its demonstration of human and animal pride, survival and psychological difficulties with a touch of overcoming, a great film with a long learning process.
What is going on with the accents in this movie? I was confused by them the entire time.
With a background and starter like this one, there is much, or too much you would wish for. The thing is to forget all that, and this would become enjoyable. The men, the sea, those creatures. I could forget the hero used to be a superhero and let an evening pass. Didn't regret. Kids should like it.
Having just read the book I gotta say I had high expectations of the movie but was kinda disappointed.
The movie is good looking but the heavy use of CGI threatens to sink the film. Trying to get a decent film from the material is like trying to catch the whale itself, elusive! Another disappointment from Howard, but he tries his best and at least it isn't another DaVinci Code sequel.
I get why this came and went. It's kind of an old school movie. And it got off to a slow start. But I'll be damned if I didn't start LOVING this when the Big Guy showed up. Thrilling stuff. That whale is so friggin big.
Chris hemsworth is a charismatic beast as usual. Future Spider-Man is also good. And that Gleeson dude is in this which is weird cuz the last movie I saw had him in it, The Guard.
Ron Howard can't catch a break. This was good and Rush is awesome.
Another one of those movies where I´m not sure what this was all about and if or, for that matter, why I should recommend it.
I can only repeat what has been mentioned in other comments. It´s neither fish nor fowl, or whale for that matter. Anyway, I, too, had no affection for the characters, they were in general the bad guys here. I also do not think that the little bit of raising the finger at the end of the movie justifies all the wrong doing. If there was intend for a moral message it´s not getting through.
The plot promises an epic movie which this simply is not.
Technically I must add the CGI looked bad. I´m talking about the composite shots during the whale hunt. This looked like in the old days when they were acting in front of an actual piece of film beeing played on a screen. Very unnatural.

A voyage into the historical tragedy that was and to some extent remains 'Whaling'. It's horrendous to think this happened and even worse to think it still does today; sickening. Personally, I cheered for the white Whale, I had no feelings of sorrow in regards the crew, whatever happens they deserved it... so be it!
I've read the #AudioBook a couple months ago and heard mixed reviews on this movie. I figured it's time to see if the movie is as good as the book.

Even though the movie was about the sailors' relationships and how a traumatic experience affects people, I was rooting for more "moby dick"! Come on, gigantic whale, come back and crush them!

This is going to be a strange comment, but there goes. I loved the story, and I thought the acting pretty great too. I didn't feel like there were lower keys from any of the cast, and it's really nice when everyone is even and giving great performances. But I did have a problem with the visuals of the movie. It was so perfect, so pretty, the light was just so artistic, that I found it took from the drama they were trying to display. It was just really off, how everything looked so beautiful while everyone was suffering, in pain, hungry, thirsty, afraid. In the end, as hard as I tried focusing on the performance, the background kept reminding me of how unreal the whole thing was. It was distracting and ultimately, disappointing. I felt the experience could have been much better if the visuals were just a little more somber.
