I read the short story. It’s creepy and messed up but there’s not enough to it for a movie. There’s a creepy boy named Tobin, a special rock that changes people and tall grass. People get lost in for good.
The movie is faithful, yet it adds more to a story that didn’t make much sense. I liked the movie more even if it’s not perfect.
Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring) giving a fine nutty performance is definitely an upside.
The first half is definitely better than the second, but it's still a cut above many cookie cutter chillers out there. Will give you the incentive to mow your lawn too.
If only dead things doesn't move in the field then why didn't they carry on the dead dog with them and tried to escape?
You will either love it or hate it. This is a movie of this type. Don’t let low or high rate fool you. Better see it for yourself
Once again, King (and son) offer an intriguing, robust premise, only to squander everything built up with the final act. I've yet to read/watch anything from the mind of Stephen that doesn't drift during the climax into total mediocrity, and ITTG is no different. It really is a shame to have a total idea factory like King never quite know how to utilise the great content he puts out. The first 40 minutes are engaging and full of promise, but little is done with the premise laid before us, fizzling out with a few good scares and some gore for good measure. Not to discredit the film makers either, some of the aesthetic shots of the grass to establish scale are truly a pleasure to behold, but visual splendor cannot support such a weak plot. Probably worth one run through for genre fans, but ultimately not worth the investment.
Really enjoyed it. For it’s a change its a complete change to your typical horror. Was an original concept with no guesses of what happens next. Lots of twists.
Excellently done and brilliant acting.
One of my favourite horrors, I’ve seen in a long time. I love horror films. I don’t normally comment, but this deserved the recognition. Excellent film!
Starts well. Then, it gets lost in the weeds.
Would have been better served as a pamphlet than a feature film.
I can understand the negative reviews but I genuinely enjoyed watching this movie. Just go in, let the twists surprise you and enjoy the ride!
dang it, I was hoping they'd find some wild Pokemon, maybe a rupee or two..
There's a good concept. People trapped in an always changing labyrinth of grass.
Visually it's great, the moving grass and close up look awesome.
Patrick Wilson is very good (specially when crazy)
And in general I like stuff about time loops and paradoxes.
So on average it's pretty entertaining with good ideas.
However there are some issues with the story and timeline, and I was pretty disappointed they were not really taken into account at the end. Having gone to read the novel's summary afterwards, I can tell that pretty much everything that annoyed me was not in the original story and they were added in the movie in a way that don't quite fit. Mainly, the fact that the field moves people in time as well as space is not in the original story.
First, some characters appear and disappear without reason, sometimes in their main timeline version, sometimes in their future selves version. Specially Tobin. I mean he's just standing there with them. They move around, no one paying attention whether the kid is following or not (wtf!). So you don't see him, assume he either did not come, or just followed and was not shown. And then future Tobin pops up instead out of nowhere.
The fact that Travis shows up 2 months later and ends up in the same loop, plus that he is the one that gets Tobin's family in the loop, going full circle, is a great idea. But then it make sit weird that most of the time people are not moved in time, only space, and spend lot of time looking for each other while being in the same time.
Future Tobin is weird. He touched the rock, but we don't know when, and he seems less affected than his father.
When Travis finally touches the rock, he is affected, however he still prioritizes saving his girlfriend over, you know, killing her like Ross did. And now how fucked up is this that he uses the kid to save his girlfriend, instead of the kid's family.
Not sure about the concept of "holes" to escape. It kinda implies that they are switching around in places by moving around. But the fields moves things even if they are not moving around, like when they jump twice on the same spot but are in different places.
Not sure how the paradox works. It's implied that they are getting killed over and over and that things happen several times in a loop. However when Becky does the phone call to her past self, it doesn't make much sense, she hasn't see any looping. The dead body of Becky's first version is shown, so it exists at some point in time, but we can suppose Travis' arrival changes that, creating an alternative. Then shouldn't there be a lot more versions of them, both alive and dead ? There should also be consequences on the final exit of Tobin's.
And... shouldn't there be more people ? Like all the people to ever interact with the field should always be crossing each other in time and space ? Unless the field -- well I keep saying the field but I guess it's actually the rock -- manages to keep separate loops for the people that know each other ?
They should not have left the field. The fact that they can get out and be in a building on the other side of the road makes no sense.
Minor detail, but I would have liked to know when Tobin's family fit in the timeline (the outside world's timeline). We know Travis came after Cal and Becky, but there's no indication of when the family arrived. Importantly if they actually arrived after Cal and Becky, they would be two Tobins in the outside world at the end of the movie, extending the field's paradox to the outside.
interesting first part, decent middle, and confusing/annoying last part! I expected more! 6.5/10 (+0.5 for the cinematography)
While watching it I kept thinking "Wow, this feels like it could be a Stephen King's story" and, well, it was. It's based on a novella by S.K. written in 2012.
Prepare yourself for time loops and paradoxes. And for looong shots of tall grass.
it seemed a bit silly bc it’s just grass, but i’m a real fan of the whole killing loop trope in general. it’s sorta edgy, so if you’re not into that you might not like it. totally sure that guy wanted to bang his sister tho. in the intro i thought he was the baby daddy at first, then travis mentioned it too. idk, man, just throwing that out there
If it’s faithful to the short story. Expect it to be disturbing and fucked up.
This is one hour and 20 minutes of people screaming eachother's names while running around in a field of tall grass.
Literally. Nothing else.
I'm a Stephen King fan with that being said I'm disappointed with this film. I get the plot, I get how the field works... but its bland. There's really nothing that excites you.
I've read a lot of Stephen King but I don't remember this story, which would make sense because this isn't good. The field of grass is cool and the whole evil rock thing is fine. But I'm totally baffled why rock-toucher Ross (Patrick Wilson) turns into an insane killer yet the other rock-toucher, Travis (Harrison Gilbertson), helps girlfriend Becky and little boy Tobin leave the tall grass. Maybe the rock has an adverse effect on realtors but rockers aren't affected as much. Eh...whatever.
The time line confused me and try as I might, I could not figure out when Becky, Cal, Ross, Tobin, or Travis were coming or going. I thought about that time line for a good while but to this point, I have no idea who arrived before who, who showed up after who. Eh...whatever. There was also something significant about the church, I suppose. I just haven't the slightest idea what it might have been. I'm going to just go ahead and assume that I wasn't paying attention and not blame Netflix for creating another crappy movie.
I didn't see the movie. My TV was pitch black half of it. I don't care about the characters I CAN'T FREAKING SEE THEM!!!!!!
Aside from some great overhead visuals of grass shifting in the wind not much of a story to warrant the time invested. I don't feel redeemed from the Tall Grass and time shall not be reset for me. It's not Oz, Dorothy, it's Kansas, with some Rock 'n' Hole.
9/10
Superb
Absolutely Superb.
This Awesome movie ticked all the boxes, and it was so bloody interesting and so well written I could have sat through another hour of it easily. What I mind bending, time warping, Alternate going-on's this hidden gem of a movie is.
I love everything this movie brought to the table,
it's my absolute favourite kinda stories so
this one was always going to be a win,win
for me anyway
and the fact it is a
Stephen King story,
well It's a win,win,win.
Great acting all around and that kid actor was brilliant,
A good range of emotions and very believable.
Obviously the man himself Wilson knocked it out the ball park, he adds so much to his horror roles and he is definitely a seasoned vet.
I loved Becky i was rooting for her from the beginning, the boyfriend surprised me and I actually really liked him but I could not stand that weird creepy ass brother,
he definitely brought my enjoyment of the movie down as he annoyed me so much and I just wanted him dead over and over and over again.
Everytime he was on screen he just pissed me off. That being said I guess his acting was on point to make me feel this way in the first place.
I still hate his creepy cowardly ass, I definitely knew (there was something off about him from the beginning,
theirs loving your sister
then loving your sister...eww).
X FINAL THOUGHT
This Awesome movie definitely takes after
one of my all time favourites
which is a movie called
"TRIANGLE"
Which is super frickin Awesome 10/10 by the way so when I heard about this one I was very excited
to see it and it certainly did not disappoint.
In fact I loved it that much
even though I have it on
Netflix I've just bought the extended cut for
50 pounds on
Blu Ray so yes I think it's safe to say I rather
enjoyed this one Lol.
This Movie is well worth you're Time...ha time...sorry it's one of them that keeps you thinking all the way through and messes with your mind while doing it,
But in a really really fun and entertaining way.
Two Thumbs up
"Loved It"
I look very much forward to watching
this time and time and time again,
Especially now it's apart of
"My Multiverse Archives".
The movie has suspense but that’s about it
It's a sorta movie that screws ur mind into illusion for a couple of hours ,
could provide the backstory or logic.
Opening half was intriguing, then it got lost in the grass and gave up.
this was a tricky one to review because there was a lot I did like about this movie: the midwestern gothic, the eldritch location, the disturbing imagery and overall direction, plus cinematography, and sexy evil patrick wilson
but I think the timeloop element was a detriment to the story (haven’t read the novella but seeing it wasn’t in it makes me want to now) WITHOUT the timey-wimey stuff more could be left ambiguous, but with it, certain things become very strange, what happened with the Tobin who touched the rock? I suppose it was just an alternate reality, but still seemed frustratingly vague
also when they established the grass cant move dead things (multiple times, might I add) why didn’t they try walking around with dead stuff to get out??
but most of all, this film felt like Heavy pro-life/anti-abortion propaganda that pissed me off so ultimately this comes out to a lot of wasted potential I think
"Can you help me find my brother?"
WHO? Your BROTHER? You and your brother are straight out of Game of Thrones
Very strange movie, not entirely sure if I liked it but not entirely sure if I disliked it either. The time warp was very confusing at first and I had to have someone explain most of it to me
i dont know why its always happening, that the ending of a good story is changed to attract a wider audience.
this makes the movie shit. well played....
How bored must you be to write this rubbish
As expected, Stephen King is great in books, disappointing in movie adaptations. Still, this one had some decent parts.
'In the Tall Grass' stinks, but a shitty movie can't destroy Patrick Wilson's theater roots. Easily the funniest part of the movie.
Why is it every time Patrick Wilson loses his mind he suddenly turns theatrical?
Well you can throw this into the pale of wasted Stephen King adaptations.
A really weird and confusing movie but it still kept me thinking till the end. From what I can say the rock in the grass keeps everyone stuck in a time-loop. But i still don't get where the loop starts or ends. Might need to watch a second time (which i think i won't). This time bending movie could have been better, shorter in length and less screaming of names. 6/10.
The trailer is waaay better than the movie!
Don't read if you hate spoilers! Spoilers I honestly don't know what to make off it. Is it an alien? Is it some ancient being? At first I even thought of parallel universes, or time loops. idk. Then There were some moments that I thought was funny. Like the pregnant woman being carried around by chanting grass people. The possible incest. And did she ate her baby? told ya spoilers. In the end I thought that what the dude did was heroic.
not the worst, but near to it
This was very tedious and boring for the most part. There were some good moments but overall not good.
wow, what a boring film...
I was defo lost in this film as much as they were in the tall grass and the grass wasn't has green for me with this mad loopy film, didn't quite 'rock' but it did keep me running through the grass till the end and a little similar to the film triangle. I thought (patrick wilson) was the best in the film.
The story its to mix up..
Netflix what else. 5/10 too much money too spend.
“In the Tall Grass” is a Netflix film based on a short story/novella written by Stephen King and his son Joe Hill. A little disclosure that I have not read the original story, so I can’t attest as to how faithful this film is, so I’ll be looking at the movie on its own merits, as few as they may be.
We start with two siblings, Cal and a pregnant Becky who are travelling through Kansas (a plus here is that we have a story from Stephen King that does not take place in Maine) when they pull over to the side of the road when Becky gets morning sickness and they hear a boy calling for help from the tall grass field on the side of the road. They get separated from each other and realize that something weird is going on, that travelling in one direction doesn’t necessarily mean travelling in that direction and time is out of joint. Others that they meet in the field are Ross, played by Patrick Wilson, his son Tobin, his wife Natalie, and Lisa’s ex-boyfriend Travis.
Alright, so as more disclosure here, I filled in the names of these characters after looking them up. I honestly could not remember their names, that’s how much of an impression they left on me, with the possible exception of the boy because when we first see him he comes off really creepy. I mean, really, it’s not so much that you want any characters to die because they’re irritating. They’re just so cookie-cutter and stereotypical that they leave little to no lasting impression.
Another reason for this is that the audience can be a little too distracted by the grass itself. It does have a certain character to it, even if it’s nearly impossible to figure out. But I found myself distracted trying to figure out the grass, how it works, its motivations, at the expense of the human characters.
And here is where we run into another problem. Because most of the set looks the same, that being in the middle of a tall grass field, the filmmakers need to rely on a series of technical and visual gimmicks to keep the audience interested and focused. But they’re inconsistent and stand out when they use them (for example, one consistent shot that is a 360 degree rotation). They don’t feel natural. You see the gimmick instead of what the gimmick is trying to show you, although that’s arguable as they’re clearly proud of some of these visual effects. In addition, this being a horror movie, there are going to be jump scares, but jump scares are just about all there is for this horror movie.
The conclusion is pretty meh and isn’t really consistent with other parts of the movie from what we learn plotwise. All around, if you’re really a Stephen King or Joe Hill fan and have nothing else to watch, go ahead, but for most people I would say not to bother.
Crappy Movie. Didn't like it at all, and I'm a Steven King Fan.

This movie was such a mindf*ck, not at all what I expected but definitely not disappointing. If you expect jump scares and gore than this is not the movie you're looking for. This was thrilling and confusing at times. For me, this is one of those movies that I wish I could watch again for the first time. Very cool.
