The worst in the series according to the critics. Probably the best for me.

Highly recommended if you like adventure movies.

Nonstop right from the jump. Indy should never be without Short Round, the mine cart chase alone puts it over the top.

loading replies

nobody is talking about the mine cart scene, huge fan of the mine cart scene

Slightly dark with fantastic elements, but after 40 years it is still a good adventure film.

loading replies

By far the best in the series. Non stop action from beginning to end that keeps getting better as the film goes on, makes this one of the best action movies ever. With iconic scenes such as the dinner(snakes & monkey brains) and the sacrifice(heart ripped out) makes this the most memorable in the series. Whilst Raiders aged badly, Temple of Doom is still as good as it was back in the day.

I thought I couldn't get more disappointed by Indiana Jones after watching the (in my opinion) absolutely hyped "Raiders of the Lost Arc". But then I saw "The Temple of Doom" and it's even worse! I will never get how this franchise got such a huge fan base: a mediocre plot at best, mediocre acting, laughable characters combined with special effects and stunts that let you tear out your hair (at least in the year 2015)! I suggest you skip this crap-fest and watch another one of the 1001 decent action/adventure flicks available!

You'll never be able to forget the beating heart part...

loading replies

This film gets too much criticism, its a rip roaring classic, and what an opening scene! just beautiful and the pace never drops, fantastic movie!

loading replies

This is the unfairly overlooked entry in the Indiana Jones trilogy. No, it's not "Raiders of the Lost Ark", but what the Hell is?!? "Temple of Doom" is about as exciting and well-executed an action flick as you will ever see.

People complain that's it's too violent with its heart-extracting and monkey brain eating excesses, but it goes a thousand miles an hour and THAT is what you buy the action movie ticket for. The realism of jumping out of a plane in an inflatable raft and the roller coaster ore cart ride not withstanding, you won't find a more breath taking ninety minutes of movie watching.

And Willie and Short Round aren't really that bad...

loading replies

I know with three films as amazing as the Indiana Jones trilogy, it's hard to pick a best and worst film, in fact it's nearly impossible. I'm just going to say that each film is great on it's own, and really shouldn't be compared to the other two.

There's plenty of fun and entertaining moments. While Kate Capshaw really isn't as bad as they say. The problem was her underwritten character that's there to be a love interest and scream and be afraid of everything.
While Short Round beating up full grown men with karate and even knocking some down with one punch each, was silly. You also have that famous nauseating dinner scene.
Despite my problems, Temple of Doom wasn't bad nevertheless. Due to fine direction and great editing. While of course, a top notch Harrison Ford.

Indy: "Wear your jewels to bed princess?"
Willie: "Yeah... and nothing else. Shock you?"
Indy: "Nothing shocks me. I'm a scientist."

The first 20-30 minutes of this are non-stop well-thought out action, it just doesn't let up. One event leads to another which leads to another. Temple of Doom for me, beats Raiders of the Lost Ark to a pulp... the kebab kill, the plane crash, the weirdly disgusting dinner, the bugs, the more macabre themes, the wagon chase, the bridge scene, the father son-ish synergy with Short Round and what a unique tone—it goes from silly to more serious to creepy to straight out comedy but I never felt like it was too much, it just gives you a bit of everything. Short Round is a great addition he's the perfect squire. Willie is incredibly annoying at times but she made me laugh more than once. Some of the sets actually look creepy with the voodoo shit, the skulls and the fire. Brillant cinematography. Incredible score. Perfect pacing. What an adventure!

I too would have passed out at the monkey brains part. Yuck!

Ke Huy Quan finally got that Oscar he deserved for the performance in this!!

Incredidbly iconic, might be my favorite of the series actually. Definitely one of the best adventure movies of all time!

As much as I’m a fan of this franchise this is undoubtedly the one i enjoyed the least. It disrespects and falsely represents Indian culture, I felt it relied more on the gross out factor.. (the dinner scene). I also found Kate Capshaw a really annoying actress. I have seen many positive reviews for this instalment, each to their own but for me without question the poorest by a margin and very disappointing after watching all others in a recent movie marathon.

loading replies

I don't understand the hype.

You can watch the movie once, but there are better ones. Maybe 20 years ago, the films might have worked better.

loading replies

Struggled to keep my attention watching this. A bit over hyped in my opinion.

loading replies

Like Cinderella sold into sexual slavery, Snow White smoking crack or Pinocchio selling his limbs for kindling, this is one dark cartoon.

They lost me when they jumped out of an airplane but weren't hurt because they were sitting inside of an inflated life raft. Also, Spielberg must really hate Kate Capshaw to make her look like such a clown.

Even though I still like "Temple of Doom" overall, it is the weakest part of the original Indiana Jones trilogy for me. The film gets off to a great start with a musical number and an extended action sequence. As it progressed, however, Kate Capshaw's Willie got on my nerves. She's just too shrill, even if she does provide one or two good laughs. The interplay between Harrison Ford and Ke Huy Quan, on the other hand, I really liked. Altogether, this second Indiana Jones film is a nice adventure story with good action, effective villains, and strong character moments. However, some elements are a bit racist from today's perspective, and the romantic subplot doesn't work that well either. Therefore, there are a few deductions in the rating from me.

outside of the occasional funny moment I really didn't like it

loading replies

The super cliché woman character, the flat bad guy characters which leave a big „why all this?“ in your face, the pointless kid sidekick and the over-the-top soundtrack make this movie not stand the test of time.

So what does this movie get points? Two points for the mining car scenes, one for the first cave trap and one for the liberation of the children.

A darker and a little silly sequel that can't quite live up to the first but still is an enjoyable movie. Its funny seeing Short Round beating up adults.

Entertaining. Silly. Memorable scenes. Too ridiculous for some and people find Willy annoying. I thinks she fits in well. After all these years I still zone out on the story part in India.

Temple of Doom is a perfect case study of George Lucas and his horrific sequelitis. While attempting to boil down what made the original a classic, George manages to devoid Temple of Doom of everything that made Raiders tick. Everything is a hollow homage with a more comedic and campy twist, with a healthy dose of 80's racism and lazy female character writing to boot. By the time we actually get to some solid Indiana action, the meal is already cold. I can't say I didn't enjoy some parts of it, mainly the climactic finale, but the giant step down from the original is tangible, and watching with a contemporary eye makes this downright offensive for most of the runtime. Still fun, but nowhere near the original in terms of premise and overall cohesion.

This was a compilation of goof porn, eating disgusting food porn, and running away from cannibals porn.

I don't care about going to a jungle and the love interest being thrown by an elephant and screaming.
And I certainly don't care about a bunch of ethnic people pulling the heart out of Indiana to enact some reincarnation magic stuff.

The Temple of Doom takes on the already established archetypes from Raiders of the Lost Ark; running away from particular people, stealing stuff, being part of preventing some resurrection prophecy. This time, the movie goes down a more fire-ish, disgusting food-ish, blood and gore-ish avenue. Upon doing that, it's really nothing more than a rollercoaster ride of uncomfortable adventure, danger, and finding a way to outsmart the bad guys.

Every once in a while, I try again to like "Temple of Doom" and I want Willie Scott to be eaten by a giant snake, or stomped on by one of those elephants, or choke on eyeball soup, or ... have her heart ripped out of her chest. I can't stand this character. I love everyone else, especially lil' Short Round. Better writing to give Willie some depth would've helped. I'm sure Kate Capshaw is a fine person, but Willie... I hate Willie.

This took some big risks with its tone that didn’t pay off. Right from the start it announces itself as a sillier film than Raiders of the Lost Ark, which it kind of is, but there’s also some really dark, grim stuff built into the middle portion of the film. There’s so much tonal dissonance that becomes all the more apparent on subsequent viewings, it’s an odd choice. I also think there’s some sloppy pacing between the set pieces that bookend the film, with some scenes dragging on for longer than they should. Those set pieces are pretty spectacular though, and I feel comfortable in saying that most action movies don’t even get as good as the first 20 minutes of this film. Visually it’s still excellent, and the music by John Williams is once again iconic. I’m not a fan of the new sidekicks however, Short Round and Willie are both pretty annoying characters. In short, there’s some iconic, boundary pushing stuff in this, but the pieces don’t all come together.

6.5/10

Ah...It tried to create magic though it didn't worked at that time. This one was decent. But the atmosphere of India was quite dark here.Anways, the chase and adventure enchanted me well to forget the backdrops. And the bridge sequence made me feel it really was a 80s film.

Temple of Doom is an excellent adventure movie that delivers a plot filled with thrilling action sequences, mysterious temples, and deadly traps. Harrison Ford delivers another outstanding performance as the iconic Indiana Jones, bringing his charm and charisma to the role. The movie is also peppered with plenty of comedic moments, adding to its overall appeal.

Road to Indy #2

"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" partly replaces archaeology with a more Bondian approach and, at the same time, gets even more kitsch and ludicrous with a crescendo of overblown action sequences and goofy gags. I found it quite charming that although the tone is noticeably more child-friendly, the second half is so full of graphic deaths and scary bits that I would never show it to my kids (if I had kids). It’s all so silly and uneven that I can totally see why this is regarded as the worst in the original trilogy. Yet, I have to say that I found it much more entertaining and memorable than "Raiders of the Lost Ark". After all, we’re talking about a saga that made irony its trademark and kitsch its mission. Its biggest flaw is the excruciatingly dull middle section, made even less tolerable by the outrageously obnoxious Jones girl. On the other hand, the action sequences stand out as some of the most intense in the saga.

Won't comment on some things, as I wasn't even remotely born when the film released (inconsistencies, jump cuts...), but this is a huge disappointment : poor scenario, poor dialogues (at least in French), over-the-top scenes of action (this is not action-packed, this is action-stuffed-and-put-some-more-again level material) and overall uninteresting.
Action movies are supposed to be simple and efficient, not dumb and unbalanced.
I don't want to talk about character's depth...
