Jacob's Ladder 2019

The original was a good film although a little overrated perhaps. This, on the other hand, is a flat and confusing remake that is several rungs below the earlier film. Watch the original instead.

The remake that didn't need to be made. Go watch the original Jacob's Ladder for one of the finest psychological horror thrillers of recent years which includes the infamous hospital basement sequence... up there with the alien abduction segment from Fire In The Sky as sheer terror made in to film. You have been warned.

Michael Ealy and Jesse Williams as brothers was beautiful casting, and I loved that it now centered a Black family. And therein ends the positive aspects of this remake. It was a terrible waste of time. The original is SO much better - Tim Robbins, Elizabeth Pena and Danny Aiello were absolutely masterful, their chemistry was believable and the tension was palatable. Also - real practical effects for the party/demon scene were excellently crafted. Just stick with that and skip this film. And last fun trivia - a pre "Home Alone" Macaulay Culkin plays the son and isn't even credited!

As far as casting and acting go, this is just brilliant. But the movie didn't need to be made, shouldn't have been made and just feels a bit of a waste. It's OK, but nothing too write home about.
