Jane Eyre 1943

I thought this was a very good well paced movie with great performances by Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine. The story flowed well and this earlier versions are much better than the newer ones. A great classic cinema watch.

This is the first good Jane Eyre adaptation I've seen! It's the only one I'm aware of that actually picks up what the book is putting down. Orson Welles as Mr. Rochester is spectacular, and Joan Fontaine captures Jane perfectly.

Somehow I've found myself getting into a lot of the classic Victorian novels this year (ie. this, Wuthering Heights, Pride and Prejudice etc.), but at least for me the appeal has been in the rich criticism each of those novels aims at 19th century England. So naturally trying to remake a classic like Jane Eyre in the 20th century will come with an inevitable redundancy, unless major themes are reworked. With Aldous Huxley and Orson Welles at the helm I figured something could have come from this, but unfortunately it is all focused on the melodrama.
