Jaws 2 1978

Jaws 2 gets a bad rep just because it is the sequel to one of the "great", not because it's a particularly bad film. Sure... It is nowhere near the first one in quality, but it IS exciting, and it is better than a lot of the imitations that the phenomenon of Jaws brought. So... in my humble opinion, Jaws 2 deserves some love now and then.

It's not good but not as bad as 3 or 4.

A disappointing follow-up.

I enjoyed Roy Scheider's performance and the core action sequences near the end, but everything else is a bit boring. 'Jaws 2' puts high focus on the teenagers, though their story never possesses any intrigue. The effects for the shark, meanwhile, are a step down from the original.

It's not terribly far from being watchable, a slightly shorter run time might've helped in that regard, but I just personally found it to be an uninteresting 115 minutes or so. Perhaps initial director John D. Hancock's ideas would've came out better, though he was fired during production; speaking of which, the issues behind the scenes for this - and even the first film, really - are pretty fascinating.

First things first: How the hell is the mayor from "Jaws" still in office in this sequel? And why didn't he learn anything from the events of the first film? The answer, it seems, is that, at its core, the studio wanted to make the same movie again, only bigger. And Mayor Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) played an important role in Steven Spielberg's masterpiece. Furthermore, the plot is clearly similar in general. Only the number of victims is larger this time.

The cast is once again led by Roy Scheider, and although he had no desire to be in the film at all, he does his job pretty well again. For the rest of the cast, this is less true. Instead of Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss, this time we follow a bunch of annoying teenagers. Of course, this is no more interesting than the great chemistry of the trio in the first part. Spielberg is also noticeably missing from the director's chair. The film is competently directed but has nothing special about it. All in all, however, "Jaws 2" is still a solid shark movie. Nonetheless, it fades into obscurity in the shadow of its predecessor.

Brody: "I have had some experience with sharks."
Ellen: "Oh, have you?"

You can't blame it for not being the masterpiece the first was. It's not Spielberg that's for sure but Jaws 2 is still great entertainment and a decent follow up. Instead of building anticipation and suspence for more than half the runtime like the first did, this one does the opposite, there's shark action throughout which isn't a bad thing it just depends what you're in the mood for—I say yes to more shark action! In all other aspects it's not on the level of the first but it still maintains certain aspects like the score, the shark practical effects and it still looks good visually. Brody already felt fully fleshed out as a character in the first but it's further solidified here and I enjoyed his psychological breakdown character arc. The third act gets repetitive but I like how it ended.

Brody is clearly a pyromaniac!

As for the sequel it 's not so bad. But Williams and his music in the subtitles are almost like Star Wars. I wonder why? ;)

Blood’s in the water and Universal strikes with the highly anticipated sequel Jaws 2. The story continues with another rogue shark plaguing the island community of Amity, but this time Police Chief Body stands alone as the town counsel refuse to acknowledge that a shark is responsible for a recent string of deaths and missing persons. Unfortunately the writing isn’t that good; the shark is portrayed as some sort of psychotic killer, and there are too many characters to follow (mostly teens who are all pretty indistinguishable). In fact the film plays a lot like a teen horror film, with a bunch of horny teenagers running around, chased by a bloodthirsty shark. Still, director Jeannot Szwarc does a pretty good job at making the action scenes intense and exciting. It pales in comparison to the original, but Jaws 2 is a decent enough thriller.

Not as good as the first of course but definitely better than part 3 and 4. It’s an unnecessary sequel that’s better than most shark movies of today.
Funny that there’s more than one idiot there to back up the dumb Mayor this time.
