Fantastic looking movie, but dreadful dialogue, cliched plot points and characters doing inexplicably stupid things ruined this movie.
Despite the big budget special effects, this movie felt like a very cheaply made movie with some of the most awkward cinematography i have ever seen and a script that feels like it was written by a bunch of kids.
The cinematography especially really got on my nerves. The colouring was ridiculous, everything was over-saturated and there were too many random slow-mo shots. The camera felt like it was under the control of a child with A.D.D who couldn't stop rapidly zooming in on peoples faces and briefly focusing on random objects.
The writing was also just terrible. All of the violent encounters they had on the island were extremely random and were over before you could even blink, there was no attempt to build tension or keep viewers at the edge of their seat. The only monsters on the island that were a threat (Skull Crawlers) were incredibly overpowered and were pretty much only there to fight Kong. Compare that to the 2005 movie where the humans were constantly fighting for their lives against a wide range of animals/creatures.
The only good thing about this movie was of course the final fight between Kong and the giant Skull Crawler. It wasn't shrouded in darkness and the camera work was smooth. One thing that annoyed me though was how the girl that was there to take photos didn't take any photos of the fight but instead idiotically stared at it through her camera lens for a few seconds before running off. Her character in general had no purpose, and the other characters were also extremely dumb and cartoonish.
Glad i didn't waste money on this one. Can't believe this is in the same universe as the 2014 Godzilla, a beautifully crafted film. But at least the next movie wont be directed by the idiot that directed this.
I really wanted to give this movie a better score but I just could not bring myself to overlook the stupid and crappy story.
Okay, let’s start with the bad. The movie is about a group of explorers exploring this Skull Island. No surprise there. They are accompanied by a military detachment. Somewhat okay still, there is a half decent explanation for that. One of the main characters in the movie is Lieutenant Colonel Packard. At first, I quite liked him, especially when he told off the journalist informing her that they did not loose the war, it was abandoned by the politicians.
However, from then on it goes really bad. Warning, spoilers ahead!
Once on the island Kong is revealed rather quickly. Something that I felt was a bit of a shame. There was no suspense building up for the reveal of the mighty ape. Okay, I could live with that. What I cannot live with is that these total dumb-asses, having discovered a scientific find of unprecedented magnitude, goes straight on to shooting off their guns. What the fuck? Not only that, they just keep shooting and circling around him while he trashes them one by one. That scene, while sporting some impressive action and CGI, was just so fucked up that one wondered if the author deliberately wanted to insult the audience.
From then on I just cringed every time Colonel Packard was in the picture. He was clearly mentally unstable. He doggedly continued to want to kill Kong and used retrieving his men as a poor excuse. This is just the kind of shitty, overused and cliche’d Hollywood script that drives me nuts.
Now, with that over with, the movie was technically quite good. The actors are doing a decent enough job of their roles. The story, excluding the Vietnam references and general let’s make the military look bad old bullshit, was actually not to bad. It was a different take on the King Kong history for sure.
The CGI, the action and the various monsters were very cool. Not surprisingly King Kong was not the only threat on the Island. This time they did not just throw a few dinosaurs in but was rather creative bringing in creatures from all kind of animal (and insect) families as well as some home cooked ones, the skull crawlers.
The scenery is also very enjoyable. Apart from my gripes mentioned above I did enjoy a lot of the movie. However, the military clusterfuck that the script writer threw in there severely diminished my enjoyment of the movie and I cannot really bring me to give it more that a 3 out of 5 score.
A change of pace for the director, following the relatively low key (and excellent) The Kings of Summer. He handles this behemoth of a blockbuster well, with decent CGI, exciting action, interesting characters and engaging, if thin, story. Only Jackson's turn, channeling the spirit and descent into madness of Marlon Brando's Apocalypse Now character, is disappointing and in my opinion not needed as there are other characters who could have used more screen time. Overall, this is a good film with many moments of shock and wonder.
Humanity at it's worst. Oh look, new island let's blow it without knowing anything about it, oh look a big monkey let's blow it up too!!! The actors are great, the graphics amazing, the storyline? HORRIBLE
Kong: Skull Island doesn't really prove to me that Warner Brothers learned anything from the flaws Godzilla had 3 years ago. This movie was promising but the characters are so dull and unlikeable that the film becomes a bit of a chore to watch. Kong takes a back seat to other monsters much like Godzilla did. John C. Reilly is possibly the best thing about this movie. He was the only character I liked and he was the only character that was funny. When Kong does show up he steals the show as he should. The action is great and I would say that I enjoyed the movie overall but I was expecting so much more.
Humans are the real monsters. Good pick on cast. Good picture, but could of been better on the CGI thought. The script had a good sense of humour. Action packed. I'm glad it didn't run as long as the last King kong movie that felt like 2 films in one. I've got 2
say I was impressed with John C. Relly, he really can play any role. Overall good film.
It's great to be able to enjoy what appears to be a renaissance of the giant monster movie in theaters. Giant monster and kaiju movies are one of my favorite things, period. They don't garner a lot of respect and it's not likely they'll win Academy Awards for Best Picture, but they are so much fun to look at. And as much as the disaster flick is now considered distasteful, I enjoy watching a beast knock over a building or empty a train of its passengers. Maybe that's the reason why I haven't been able to fully appreciate "Kong: Skull Island". After two trips to the theater to watch it, something just isn't there for me.
2014's "Godzilla" brought with it a palpable tension. Moviegoers complained that it lacked monster action, but there was a massive scale to it. Between the MUTOs and Godzilla, cities were in peril from stomping kaiju and from nuclear bombs. When the MUTOs and Godzilla mixed it up in San Francisco, Las Vegas and Hawaii, there was real danger and regular people. Everyone in harm's way on "Skull Island" is either military or some sort of specialist who traveled there by their own will. They may not know entirely what they may be up against, but beasts aren't attacking them or the ones they love on their home turf. Battling Kong and other beasts in a far away jungle just doesn't have the same impact.
I like the new Kong. His size makes him potentially more lethal, and after seeing the movie a second time, he has more personality than after my first go round. Kong doesn't even approach realism, though. He's an impressive CGI creation, but he's a cartoon. None of the other beasts are really that interesting. I did like the giant spider as a nod to "Son of Godzilla" but the Skull Crushers were bland. Vicious, but bland.
The movie itself is very colorful and I like that it's set in the 1970s. The score was good but there were a few too many tired Classic Rock tunes and montages. John C. Reilly was terrific as "time traveler" Hank Marlow and I would have loved to be exploring the strange and unexplained with John Goodman's Bill Randa. Tom Hiddleston's sensitive but macho Conrad wasn't as invisible after an additional watch but Brie Larson's character was still as unlikable and snotty.
As the giant monster mini-genre continues to grow, I will be at the theater to buy a ticket to every one that's released. Even though "Kong: Skull Island" was just good to me, I am certainly glad that it's sold a lot of tickets and has been enjoyed by others. My ask is that the movie carnage continue.
I just rewatched this movie after only initially seeing it when it came out and I gotta say, it might not be the most inventive or deep movie, but it is thoroughly entertaining, well-done and probably the most self-contained consistent movie within the Monsterverse.
While it does share some flaws with the Godzilla movies, we well as with recent outing Godzilla vs Kong, like a very inconsistent CGI, human characters that lack substance and not enough Kong in his own film, they are less glaring than in some of the other movies.
Kong is a likeable monster protagonist and the movie does a fine job making him sympathetic by throwing most Kong clichés out of the window and keeping it more subtle. While the human cast is might not very fleshed out, they are at least not as annoying as most characters in the Godzilla movies.
John C. Reilly gives a fun performance and Samuel L. Jackson is beautifully over the top as the human villain. Brie Larson is fine, despite getting not much to do and Tom Hiddleston serves well as straightforward action hero. Also, he is super hot in this role.
Kong: Skull Island is an enjoyable film that serves exactly what it’s promised.
I gave this movie a 9..I'm a sucker for big Monster movies anyways and this has the perfect blend of stellar cast, great story..fun visual effects..bangin soundtrack..smmmmokin female lead..and John C Reilly added just enough comedy to not Lethal Weapon 3 it death..I came back to change my score to a 10 to offset all the soy boys hatin
I've already forgotten most of what happened and why it needed to.
A fun and thrilling monster movie, Kong: Skull Island presents a bold new vision. The story follows a team of scientists and soldiers who set out to explore a remote island and discover a giant ape-like creature. Starring Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, and John Goodman, the film has a strong cast. And the character design and special effects for Kong are especially well-done; giving him a unique look unlike any previous film. Also, the fight sequences are incredibly exciting and action-packed. However, the plot is pretty formulaic and the characters are one-dimensional stereotypes. Kong: Skull Island is not without its flaws, but it’s still an entertaining adventure.
You could take almost any still from this and put it up on a wall, and it could be considered a work of art. The incredible artistic vision that was brought to life in Skull Island is perfection. Absolute perfection. Each shot is teeming with gorgeous color and detail. One of the best looking films ever produced, and I'm a fan of films going all the way back to the silent era. This is the quintessential summer monster movie, but it's more than a monster movie: it's a visual marvel with a lot of heart and creativity. A masterpiece on every level. The comedy, the characters, the drama, the direction, and action are all outstanding. One of the best films I've ever had the pleasure of watching.
Surpisingly good? And it actually looked really beautiful. I don't know, I wanted to watch an adventure movie without a lot of substance and that's what I got and I'm completely fine with that.
A fun popcorn movie with good actors and a great cinematography.
My rating to this movie is the perfect average between the "monster" part (a full 8) and the "human" part (a generous 4).
The Monster part is everything related to Kong and his fellow inhabitants of the Island that are incredibly thought and realized. Their interactions (and fights!) are simply amazing.
On the other hand, there's the part that is full human, that includes the characters, their stories but also the actors, the director and the writers. The plot is, at best, thin and near all the characters (except Goodman's and, maybe Reilly's) are mostly useless and in some cases (Hiddleston) both useless and ridicolous. Hiddleston playing an ex RAF Captain now an hunter/tracker is as credible as a Nobel for Peace assigned to Trump. Another movie where he shows that he is not even mediocre as an actor.
Also the "Apocalypse now" feeling (a tribute? a copycat? an ironic view?) is really embarassing.
On a side note, a chapeau to the director of photography for some incredible moments
It's just a fun movie. Don't expect any deep story or such.
What a desappointment. And yet the beginning of the movie looked interesting. however the more the story progressed and the more I told myself that it was not worth the original movie. uninteresting dialogue, wacky story, only Kong remains impressive ... next
They would not have had these problems if they'd just kept the helicopters out of Kong's reach in the first place. Didn't these idiots watch the original movie?
In my opinion, this movie was OK.
Could be better, when those weird lizard monsters would be actual lizards (like every other 'monster' is just a big version of an existing animal). The cinematics were great, don't get me wrong. It was nice to watch, but full of errors and a lot of people are involved while, at the end, you still know nothing about. The only one you'll learn something about, is the WWII guy.
Still it's definitely a movie you should watch. Definitely a fun to watch movie when you aren't thinking too much.
It's mediocre, yet also really entertaining sometimes. In that regard, the closest comparison to this is Jurassic World.
Pros:
- Visuals and cinematography.
- Conflict within the group of characters.
- The characters of John C. Reily and Toby Kebbell (although underused)
- Action, particularly the climax.
- The editing stands out a few times.
- Nicely paced.
Cons:
- Too many characters, meaning you won't care about pretty much all of them. They also don't take their time to develop them, meaning that most of them come across as Fast and Furious cartoons.
- Some iffy CGI (not with Kong, but with the other creatures).
- Some minor moments that felt out of place or coincidental.
- Besides a few gags, all the humour falls flat.
- The second act drags a bit.
- Sometimes, the colour grading is overdone.
Grade: 5/10
Gave up on this movie, couldn't care about any of the characters
Good visuals e special effects. The locations for the scenarios is amazing. They used the old cliche about how humans don't respect the animals spaces and how they turned into the real monsters. There is not a great develop of characters but who cares about that while a giant monkey is fighting against a giant lizard/dinosaur?
Better than Godzilla.
Jordan Vogt-Roberts is a promising director. He is very good.
The weak part of this movie is definitely the screenplay. The characters could have been a little more developed. I didn't care much about them, and the death of some of them did not affect me as I would.
The action sequences were awesome, the cinematography was beautiful. John C. Reilly, Shea Whigham and Kong (obviously) were the best part of the movie. The rest of the cast was solid (the screenplay didn't help). The skull crawlers were also very good.
Overall, good movie that could have been great.
"You hear that? That sounds like a bird, but it's not, it's a fucking ant."
I can't get enough of this film.
I love every thing about it. Jordan Vogt-Roberts more than pleasantly surprised me. I will not doubt him in the future.
The set-up, the story, the characters, the set pieces, the direction, the soundtrack, visuals, the colors, the action, just, everything. I don't understand how someone could not love this.
Even though the original 1933 King Kong is still the best film to date, Kong: Skull Island comes close to matching it's brilliance. Many people have to remember that while the 1933 classic was undeniably groundbreaking for it's time and carries a more subdued and personal story of beauty and the beast, the core story of the film is very much basic.
Here's a rundown:
A group of people are brought together for a mission to go to an uncharted island in the south pacific, dubbed Skull Island. They don't know what's there, but decide to head there to finally unravel the mystery behind one of the last unexplored places on Earth. Once they arrive, things go to hell. They meet natives, all sorts of creatures that want to eat them alive, and they encounter a giant destructive ape. The surviving explorers have to survive the horrors of the island and make it off alive in one piece.
Did I just describe King Kong (1933) or Kong: Skull Island (2016)? Eh, they sound similar? Both have different characters, subplots, and completely different tones, but metabolically is the same.
John Goodman is great in any role he's in. His best scene is his monologue towards Sam Jackson's character, Packard. Tom Hiddleston plays a standard mercenary, named James Conrad. He's a badass bar-fighting navigator who's paid to join Monarch's escort mission. Just same the as Goodman, he's great at delivering memorable lines. He reminds me a lot of Indiana Jones. But the emotional core of the film comes from John C. Reilly's character, Marlow. He lands on Skull Island back in World War 2 and is stranded there for over 20 years with a fellow enemy from the war. After the uniforms come off, they practically become brothers. He makes for a good comic relief, but soon takes over the story, as he reveals he has a wife and possible son that he's never met. He's the one you really root for, hoping he makes it off the island alive. I was surprised how deep Packard got as far as a character. He becomes a more tragic villain towards the end, as he slowly grows more and more obsessed with taking down Kong. After witnessing the giant ape take down all of his men, he kind of snaps. He couldn't handle another defeat after Vietnam, or has he says it, "We abandoned the war," and so his sanity was barely hanging on. Very pleasant surprise and Jackson does a great job as always. My favorite line of his is, "Bitch, please!" that he snaps at Brie Larson. Pretty epic shit.
Of course, Kong is just as amazing as ever. They perfected him this time around, the special effects are as good as you can get, on-par with the amazing Peter Jackson version. Before I went into the film, I was worried Kong was just going to become a standard giant monster that you wouldn't be able to relate to or get emotional with, but I was proven dead wrong. When I look at this ape, I see the same Kong I love and grew up with in the 1933 and 2005 versions; he's just a lot bigger here.
Jordon Vogt-Roberts absolutely nails the style of this film. I suppose a lot of the credit could be given to his cinematographer, who also does all the work for Zack Snyder, on films like 300 and Watchmen. But the slow-motion shots of the helicopter blades rotating, sunrise backdrops with Kong in the foreground, and Hideaki Anno style shots are littered all throughout... and it is just glorious. This is one of the most gorgeous films I've ever watched in a theater. The colors just pop out in every shot; every shot is just teaming with detail and beauty. I can't get enough of it. The slow-motion sequence with Tom Hiddleston in the green smoke, the blue and red color contrast in the bar scene, the sunset backdrop with the helicopters flying, the IMAX camera shots of Vietnam mountains, and the final monster battle are all wonderful. I can't list them all, because the entire film is just beautiful. Absolute perfection on a technical level here.
As I said in my previous review, This is the movie Jurassic World wanted to be. It's an epic, funny, loud, explosive, and visually incredible film giving us tons of great character moments and monster action. I absolutely love this.
We'll meet again
Don't know where
Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again
Some sunny day
holy shit this sucked donkey dick. so glad I didn't check it in theather... utterly crap!!!

The editing looks like it was made in the 70's minus the CGI
I had high hopes for this movie, but I found it a little boring. However, the CGI of Kong (especially when he eats that giant octopus in the river) was amazing!!
This film isn't my usual type, however I did enjoy it actually. I have watched the original King Kong film and the Peter Jackson version and liked them both. But this one felt a lot more action/adventure based than those. Lots of guns and helicopter crashes etc. However, it was interesting and kept me entertained until the end.
I love that Kong doesn't die this time :)
Kong - professional baseball player of Skull island. Favourite activities: squats, fights in cage
Favourite book: Human - The theory of thinking
Favourite quote: No gods. Only kings. (Andrew Ryan)
More monsters then expected with Tom Hiddleston playing an interesting roll for him and Samuel L Jackson being the crazy military man looking for his next fight. From the Vietnam war to invading Monsters Island! They weren't ready for this!
Well made monster movie filled with action, and I'm looking forward to the next one.
Really good movie!
Some editing and musical (same-y tracks, exact same utilization each time) choices aside, 'Kong: Skull Island' is entertaining. Kong looks great, Skull Island is brought to life pretty neatly. The action sequences and visual effects are done to a positive standard. The near 2hr run time is paced well too.
Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson are a strong match, with John C. Reilly the best of the rest. Samuel L. Jackson's character is a little underwhelming, though Jackson manages to make Preston Packard more memorable than most others actors would've. Elsewhere, John Goodman is his usually reliable self.
The second movie of the "Monsterverse". I watched 2014's 'Godzilla' many years ago without knowing it was part of a wider universe. I didn't actually like that film all that much, looking back at clips etc. to refresh my memory I can see why. Thankfully, this 2017 entry to the franchise is a lot more enjoyable.
I loved the new approach, I really appreciate that it is not a remake of the original story but a reimagination. Everything related to Monarch is very interesting and I really enjoyed the militarized style. I liked each of the characters, especially Brie Larson and the main villain. This is undoubtedly the best version of Kong, I loved that he is a big kaiju, his role as a protector and the fights scenes.
No matter how many years go by, this will always be my favorite Monsterverse movie. #TeamKong
I'm obsessed with Vogt-Roberts's visual style; I don't know why he doesn't make more movies. I'm also a big fan of the casting, right down to the lesser-known Whigham's, Mann's, and Cordero's populating the supporting roles. The cast also helps in making the movie so endlessly quotable, a quality rare in many modern releases.
It was an inspired choice to use the backdrop of the "Lost World" tropes so commonly used in Kong stories as an allegory for the American soldier's experience in the Vietnam war. Which, in turn, lends the film the opportunity to employ plenty of Vietnam war nostalgia tropes, especially through music.
The only real drawback the movie has isn't even a problem with THIS movie, but that I find myself thinking about the surrounding MonsterVerse and this movie's place in it instead of just enjoying the really good movie in front of me.
Otherwise, the only thing that makes this movie hard to watch, is that I start gushing about it as soon as it starts! I love it and I can't shut up about it!
There's so much good about this, as well as bad. I loved the visuals of absolutely everything. I can never understand how these movies are real. The sound and violence pierces right through you. The cinematography and editing was beautiful, stunning shot after shot. My problem is with the casting and character work. The amount of times I got annoyed at genericness and point blank clichés is ridiculous. I wish we had more of a Kong point of view, rather than 9 different storylines that make less sense than kong. The score was annoying, too. It could have been epic, but it just felt meh.
"That is one ugly ass bird."
"Sounds like a bird but it's a fucking ant."
The introduction to Skull Island was excellent, it's a great adventure filled with interesting weird animals (the bamboo spider crab being my favorite) and our characters navigating through it was my favorite aspect.
The introduction to Kong is decent but not to the level of Godzilla in my opinion and he doesn't get enough screen time. Too much human with not much of a story except them surviving and reacting to the environment. The lore surrounding Skull Island and Kong on the other hand was interesting and I welcomed the exposition.
There isn't much to the characters beside the comedic moments by Samuel L Jackson and Kong having a soft spot for Brie Larson. John C. Reilly was so annoying in the first two acts but he got better once the action started.
Not enough action in the second act, it really slowed the movie down. There's a few cool creature designs like the bamboo spider crab, the tree bug... but the Skullcrawlers are not that cool of a creature design. The helicopter scene at the beginning are the most memorable and the final battle was great action.
As "Me Go Boom and Smash" action movies go, I thought this was better than average. Even though we know next to nothing about any of these people, the characters themselves had strong personalities, especially Sam Jackson and John C. Reilly's characters, and to a lesser extent, Brie Larson and Tom Hiddleston ... and Kong, I guess? The real draw though was in the directing by Jordan Vogt Roberts, who I thought provided some imaginative angles beyond the standard fare. I would watch it again just for those elements.
I've seen "Kong: Skull Island" enough times now to say that it's probably my favorite Monsterverse movie. I just love the humorous tone, the great kaiju design, and the strong imagery. Especially in the supporting cast, the characters are also quite appealing. And Kong is also definitely impressive. Only the characters of Brie Larson and Tom Hiddleston are a little boring. But I still have a lot of fun with the movie. I don't know why director Jordan Vogt-Roberts hasn't made another movie since this one.
Every single time Kong appears on the screen I get goosebumps
Cool take action romance and comedy
Straight dog dodo. With only a few decent action segments. Brie Larson in a wet tea shirt doesn’t save this movie.
it was painful to watch, waste of good actors
The weakest sauce one can watch. This is probably one of the worst ideas you can turn into a film in the 21st century.
Oh, we found the last place on earth human has not touched yet; let's get military there and bomb the shit out of this island; oh, there live giant species never seen before?; kill them all!!; we shot at a monkey who lived in peace for decades, and now he killed my comrade; throw bombs at him already! Pure destruction, pure desolation, pure arrogance. Oh, and why the actual f*ck do they throw in the hollow-earth conspiracy theory without any comment?! Sorry, but I'd rater look at ape faeces for a full day than continue with this "fun entertainment".
Also, I'm very sad to see Jing Tian in a movie like this.
Feels a bit like a variant on the Moby Dick theme.....
A little too much chaff and not enough story. Yet another movie about a cowboy with a small brain, but with a large barrel.
Much better than I was expecting, though not as good as it should've been given the cast. Had several honestly funny moments amidst the action, and the creature designs (besides Kong) were amazing and almost felt like prehistoric versions of some of the creatures from Annihilation. The plot was about as solid as it could be given the setup, and the action was great. I went in just looking for the background I needed for Godzilla vs. Kong and got a pretty fun two hours out of it instead. Definitely worth a watch or two!

THE GOOD:
The second entry in Legendary’s Monsterverse franchise takes the basic concept from Godzilla (2014) and puts it in a new mold, thus improving on some shortcomings from the first film. Most notable among these is a lighter colour palette, more impressive visuals and a more varied and interesting cast (John Goodman, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Bree Larson, need I go on?).
The plot moves along swiftly, introducing the characters and setting the basic plot before moving onto the main event. This ensures that audiences will remain on the edge of their seats as we get plenty of Kong action early on, after which the film never truly slows down (unlike the non-existent build-up towards an anticlimactic Godzilla reveal in the last film).
Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts does a good job of picking the right angles and camera movements to provide an interactive viewing experience, taking the audience right into the action while keeping things steady enough to allow us to see what’s going on.
This is the most visually intriguing and colourfully exciting Kong movie so far, making every action scene unique in shape and style, thus keeping viewers firmly attached to the entire experience.
I’m glad they decided to handle the classic “Kong abducts the helpless lady” plot detail a little differently this time around, allowing for a more mutual emotional connection between Kong and Mason.
THE BAD:
Some comedic elements seem forcibly added to the script to keep things a bit more lighthearted, chief among them John C. Reilly’s character in all his annoying glory.
There are plenty of character moments in between action sequences, but they feel like forced attempts at mostly hollow and meaningless character development. It doesn’t help that the cast is slightly overstuffed, meaning that there isn’t time to fully develop everybody. Tom Hiddleston, especially, hangs around with very little to do.
While the plot attempts to modernize the classic King Kong story and bring in deeper mythological and social plot elements, it feels as if the script only goes halfway and never allows its ideas to reach their full potential.
In terms of the entire Monsterverse, Kong: Skull Island brings nothing new to the table, only feeling like a glorified next step towards the eventual meeting between Kong and Godzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong (2021).
Damn you guys, give Brie Larson a weapon and something to do already!
THE UGLY:
I’m beginning to think these Monsterverse movies are truly MCU movies in disguise. First, we had the Maximoff twins in Godzilla, and now we have a secret S.W.O.R.D mission with Nick Fury, Captain Marvel and Loki.
THE VERDICT:
Another visually stunning entry in the Monsterverse suffers from an overstuffed cast and a halfhearted plot.
66% = :heavy_minus_sign: = UGLY
The visual is epic but the jokes where bad.
But worth to watch it good action movie
standard action fare, meaning you don't really get invested in the characters. that said, i think it's really interesting that a lot of the critiques for the preceding godzilla movie complained about the amount of story and focus that was placed on the humans, only to read reviews for kong and find out that the issue is not enough development into the humans? i really don't think that they were the point of this story, at all. the ones that did intend to inspire empathy were given a little more context, and the ones that were storytelling tools served their purpose.
anyway verdict: kong is not as cute as godzilla but he's very nice and he does a good job of ripping innards out of antagonist monsters. also, the giant water buffalo was like studio ghibli come to life and i'm here for it. could've done with fewer mammoth insects.
Loved it the first time! Second time it got a bit boring already
Tries to be a very serious movie but it doesn't work out the way If you are not a fan of the franchise or the "monster verse" you should not miss this.
God acting fron Brie Larson and Tom Hiddleston
"Kong: Skull Island" has it's moments of fun and being epic, but can somehow feel so small. Peter Jackson's "King Kong" was far superior than this and felt more grand in it's scale. The whole experience was kinda hollow.
Besides the characters being really one note; John C. Reilly was the best part of this movie. A real show stealer. I rather see a movie with Reilly's character being stuck on the island with Kong. I mean, nothing against the other actors, as they did the best for what's been written for them. I just couldn't care less when characters bite the dust.
The influences of "Apocalypse Now" and Spielberg movies, mostly "Jurassic Park", is an interesting mix. The director, Jordan Vogt-Roberts has a vision and when you hear him talk in interviews, he knows what he's talking about. To be fair, he handle the action scenes very well. The visual queues of classic cinema are there and can be harsh when it comes to criticism of his own work. Everything else was more of a miss than a hit.
Will you gain anything from watching this movie? No. Would I recommend you watch it? No. Would I recommend you don't watch it? Also no. That's how little impact this movie will have on you. It exists, but if it didn't, the world wouldn't be any different.
It's big dumb silly monster action. The CGI looks pretty good and there are some cool shots with Kong. The cast is stacked but nobody stands out really.
Alright, after seeing it 7 times now, I can definitively say this is one of the best movies I've ever seen and probably the best monster movie ever created. I absolutely love every single thing about this movie. No complaints from me on any level, from the characters, the music, the performances, the visual effects, Evangelion inspired shot choices, the editing, bright color palettes, fucking everything. I can't get enough of this masterpiece. I really can't. I keep watching little parts of it on a daily basis.
I actually tear up now when I see Lt. Hank Marlow return home to his family. Such a sweet moment.
10/10 everything. I don't know how the Monsterverse cinematic movies can impress any further. They've raised the bar so high up now.
For me one of the best adventure and creature movies at all. Not even one minute felt long, unbelievable for a 2h movie.
This was a really good movie!
CGI at its best. There was only one scene which looks completely like green screen.
The end was kind of sweet, but you guess it as it is a long movie. Don't know if I like the character of Samuel Jackson that much.
No big story but good action.
I had originally no intent of watching this. Why did I ?
It's 35 degrees outside, I am bored and I got Netflix.
Feels like an amalgation of at least 10 different movies from the past. It's actually not awful. If you've survived all of Marvel you'll get through this, too. For sure it is way better than Peter Jackson's version. Probably the worst role I ever saw SLJ play but kudos for not giving us the romantic love story that usually comes along. You can even spot some kind of meaning in all of this about how humans treat nature. But it is neither the basis for this movie nor it's main goal. No, that would be fun. And the soundtrack is great.
the cgi? top notch
the green screen? not so much
the acting? good
the dialogue? not good
tom and brie being the most attractive couple i've seen since tessa and michael in creed? 100000000%
the eye candy made up for the entire movie yes ma'am
7/10
Who would've thought that Kong would end up being one of the most visually beautiful movies I've seen this year. It's a fun spectacle.
2.pheww, things you have to do for tom hiddleston !!
Honestly, I thought this was going to just be a bunch of people shooting at a giant gorilla, but I was pleasantly surprised. it had a great plot and I really did love it.
There was a ton of issues with this movie. But to see Dr Dre and Easy E in another movie was nice! Overall, this is worth a watch, but there are so many other movies that are better. Very unrealistic behaviors of animals, just like Jurassic Park.
Exiting movie with alot of action and fighting for their life, will be more exiting to watch it on a big screen with home theater to feel like in real cinimas. Samual Jackson as usual an amazing actor with alot of others which made the movie very nice. Recommending to watch!
Liked this flick. Kong, way more realistic than I expected.
this movies le very bad. .. why the scene of the film mixe the serious and funy moment and is bad
the actors have is bad because the dialogue of the scenario is bad
Kong is good and the spécial le good but dont all scene
If this were a satire of US military policy then it might have worked. But it wasn't, so it didn't.
Horrible dialogues, amazingly stupid characters and a dreadful and horrible "story".
BUT the fights, animations and visuals were pretty damn awesome! 6/10
Special effects is what this movie makes it great.... loved it....
oh...and great music too....
It is really different from the old movies and I actually enjoyed the change. Loved the huge animals and the stunning nature. Got tired ot seeing Samuel Jackson in every big movie recently, but I guess the guy can sell himself. Maybe the lizard thingies were not the best "bad guys", but it reminded me for Kong vs Godzilla. Anyway the movie was good. Hope they to a sequel.
Just pain awesome. Loved setting it fitting Vietnam, loved the action, the design and the effects. They did wonders by not simply remaking the original classic again and setting apart. John C Reilly was a great addition, where I thought he'd be typical, cheap comedic value, he was the deepest character, with a satisfying conclusion. And man, that end stinger... joygasm.
This is probably the closest thing that might happen if you mixed Lost and Jurassic Park :)
You guys did a great movie, I respect that
Packed with great CGI action which made the retelling of Kong exciting , too many characters hard to get attached to but fun to watch them interact indeed
Awesome special effects and I can't wait for a sequal.
This felt a lot like "journey to the center of the earth". pretty mediocre and not so well crafted. Didn't enjoy it even though i like the kong saga. i got bored quite often during the two hours
The music of this movie is very good
Visually well done but almost every plot point felt forced.
A true marvel of visuals and colors.
Never boring, really enjoyable.
Nothing more to ask from this movie.
Kong is King.
In the 1970 an unchartered island gets discorverd by new satelite technology in the mids of the cold war, and a scientist manages to finance an expedition to this island. With the help of the military under a leader played by Samuel L. Jacskon who is to be retired but loves war, they reach the island only to find it inhabited by a number of giant creatures like spiders, squids, water buffalos - and of course the king of all creatures: Kong; and as Ahab, Samuel L. Jackson sets out to kill this enemy of mankind at any cost.
This movie is mainly all about showing off giant creatures fighting. The framing story is sound, the sets are beautiful and show a number of beautiful and impressive scenery. After setting the story up, the pace is extremely fast - we approach the island via helicopter and the movie makes a hommage to Apocalypse Now, and then already King Kong appears and rips the helicopters from the sky.
Stranded on the island, the team tries to reach the pick-up point to get of the island and while doing so we witness what this movie is all about: CGI creatures fighting each other in epic battles. These are more interesting than the survivial fights and especially more interesting than the acting of the crew. Even though the cast consists of highly appreciated actors, such as Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John Goodman, Toby Kebbell - all actors from wich we expect great. However in this movie their talent isn't even yielded but rather vasted. The only two actors that are somewhat remarkable are Smauel L Jackson and Jason Mitchell - all the other roles could have been played by amateurs and wouldn't have changed the quality.
The tone of the movie that is set with the jungle, the action and the giant biests is rather frightening - however it is often disturbed by jokes. While some things where really good, such as some funny scene changing cuts and some situational comedy, most of the time I was annoyed by the funny remarks that where constantly made and that had an aclimatic touch.
So at the end we have an rather insignificant movie, that has great CGI, great images and great beast fights, but nothing more than that. However, it was fun watching it, it isn't a movie that one has to see, but it's an entertainment movie that does it's job well. To compare it with a similar movie: I gave Godzilla 8/10. This movie was slightly worse.
If you watch this in cinemas: Stay seated! There is an after credit scene!
it wasn't what i expected but it was good as well. entertaining, thrilling adventure.
Not as could as I thought it would be but definitely worth the watch
For a character that has been done so many times, this is one of my favorites.
Excellent graphics and good story lines. Pretty strong main characters, a few plot issues with minor characters but definetely worth seeing if you enjoy this type of character. I went with a group of 5 and we all enjoyed it.
The movie was mostly action with some pretty decent graphics and special effects. The main thing I did not like was the "mankind will destroy animals and show them who's the boss" type attitude portrayed by the Samuel Jackson's irrational and over zealous character.
Then again, a lot of the decisions that took place seemed irrational.
What is this.... not good movie
This movie is good... please watch this video...
Ooo ooo ahh ahh ahem! I mean... Don't leave until the credits are over, the whole theatre missed a great end credits scene haha dummies
Great movie. Wish the streams were in 720p or 1080p. 480p makes for a poor viewing experience.
I just love it, this is a great movie the vissual effects are awesome and every battle is amazing, it is entertaining, the only bad thing that I saw was the history, as the movie progresses, this seems to be going down, But in general it is a very good option to see this month, and definitely, sets the stage for a crossover with the king of monsters.
I didn't have much expectations on this movie as I expected it to be just another remake of the same story or a reboot that drastically deflected from the source (like 2014's Godzilla that barely had Godzilla in it) but I got surprised by how this Kong is different of other Kongs and I liked it.
Pro:
- Not a KingKong remake, sure it's the same setting and same giant ape but... the story is different;
- John C. Reilly's Marlow steal the show and the end of the movie is perfect;
- Jackson is awesome at making characters you just want to punch in the face;
- In this context, US military aren't heroes and they pay for blood-lust stupidity;
- They don't bring Kong as a circus beast in the States!;
- Kong didn't die at the end.
Cons:
- I'm not a specialist, but helicopters that are lightning-proof (as explained in the movie) should not fly in a huge thunderstorm clouds with side doors wide open;
- Speaking of choppers, did they really put music through loudspeakers outside of one chopper so all the formation could listen to '70 rock?
- apparently a giant ape can hold a woman in his clenched fist and fist fight a monter without hurting the woman;
- Kong survive to way more injuries than what killed him in other movies, probably to allow him to survive Godzilla's atomic fire breath... (disclaimer, I haven't seen King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962))
The animals are well done and the fights also, Samuel L. Jackson doing the usual, but I liked more others from Kong
Very enjoyable movie, two hours went so quickly and could have done with another 15/20 minutes to be honest. The pace is excellent and a thrill a minute. The action hardly lets up and the acting is good.
The movie at times reminded me of Jurassic Park which is never a bad thing. Plenty of surprises and jump moments. The audio is incredible and very loud! Definitely a big screen movie to take it all in - oh and Kong is HUGE!! They've done a great job here and I'd definitely watch it again.
Kong was definitely made for the people disappointed in Godzilla's lack of Godzilla. Those who hated Godzilla will probably love Kong; however those in the middle will feel the same. In all, it's a great Blockbuster film worth watching in cinema, and it sets up the next Godzilla film quite nicely.
This is a good monster movie: full of action, very good visual effects, nice screenplay and some good characters. It's worth watching it, saved me from complete boredom on friday night. Recommend.

What Kong: Skull Island may lack in substance, it makes up for with sheer excitement.
Finally, a thrilling adventure movie, like in the olden days, but with the added creative possibilities offered by modern technology. Breathtaking scenery, a straightforward plot and jaw-dropping action sequences make this new Kong iteration a thoroughly entertaining movie, with Vogt-Roberts' dynamic direction not allowing for an instant of dullness. And the colors! In an era in which each movie has to be desaturated to feel epic, Kong really felt as a breath of fresh air.
The movie isn't without its faults though, mainly regarding some underdeveloped characters that are clearly cannon fodder, a bit of over-reliance on the tone contrast between comedic and tragic and some rapidly switching character motivations. It could really have used 15 minutes more.
These faults are, however, dwarfed by the pure experience. An incredible visual treat with no shortage of excitement. Solid 7.5.
