Leave No Traces 2021

There is a clear intention of justice that perhaps provokes an excessive exposure of the subterfuges used by the authorities to counteract the accusations of mistreatment. But this meticulousness is necessary to show the psychological pressure that a corrupt State can exert. It's a suffocating film, a political gaze of denunciation in the manner of Costa-Gavras, which has a claustrophobic music by Ibrahim Maalouf.

Like a tax audit where they focus on every detail and it feels like it goes on forever.

I don't mean to minimize the tragic true events surrounding the death of a Polish teen at the hands of the communist police militia in 1983, but the excessive 2 ½ hour runtime dilutes the martyrdom of the poet graduate.

The facts were all there and the look and feel of the film was definitely late-80s Poland, but I feel the filmmaker could've made more creative choices to give the events the impact they deserve.
