Let the Right One In 2008

Suffice to say that this one is definitely different. Maybe the Twilight series could learn a thing or two from this one? :P

This is not a horror film. Instead it is a story of love. And oh boy, what a story. One of the best love films ever made.

Watched it when I was eight or nine or something. I couldn't sleep for like a month.

The original title of the film is Låt den rätte komma in.

Wasn’t sure if I had seen this before. Watched it. Yes, I had. The concept is good but the movie itself immensely slow and full of inconsistencies.

One of the best movies of this decade that best catches the sense of the 80s and not the neon side of it, but that bleak, almost neo-noir feel of old Polaroids. Visually, it is gorgeous. The content pulls on your heart, the pre-adolescent love beats intensely and lingers wantingly while gruesome things happen in the background. And yet, it leaves a warm smile on your face.

The most humane vampire movie

European films are often a bit more natural in their presentation than American ones, and at least in the case of "Let the Right One In," this statement is definitely true. The story about the relationship between a young victim of bullying and a girl vampire is rarely laid on thick; instead, the plot mostly progresses quite calmly, interrupted at most by the occasional spike of violence. The two young actors are given plenty of room to develop their characters. And both are also really strong, with Lina Leandersson as the vampire Eli being especially compelling. But it has to be said that the rest of the cast doesn't get too much to do and remains pale. However, this is not particularly an issue, as the focus is clearly on the duo as well as on the atmosphere in general. And cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema captures the sleepy and snowy Swedish landscape perfectly. In any case, I'm not surprised that "Let the Right One In" has spawned a U.S. remake, as the Swedish original is really quite strong.

Let the Right One In may be the greatest vampire movie ever made. The cast is perfect and they masterfully pull at your emotions. I love the beauty of the romance juxtaposed to the cold, harshness of the narrative. The telling is slow, but it knows right when to grab and shake you.

I have kept this blurb in my phone's notepad for over a week, yet I’m still conflicted about this movie. Even though I definitely liked it, I am not exactly sure why. I have a feeling that the flaws in the writing are redeemed by how the director managed to pull off potentially camp material with a kind of austerity and elegance that is typical of Nordic deadpan. Let’s keep in mind this came out at the same time as True Blood and Twilight.

The ambiguity of the two main characters’ relationship is fascinating, yet it might as well be an overinterpretation rather than the filmmaker’s actual intention. The original novel probably gave more context, but the film alone feels oversimplified and lacks the level of introspection that the tone suggests.

I doubt that the same exact script could have worked if shot in the States, which is why I will also check out the American remake.

If you like the movie I highly recommend reading the book, it adds a lot to the story. There is quite a bit left out in the film compared to the book, I kind of wish the movie was a half hour longer so it could fit some more things in. The film is still a masterpiece.

The Swedish version, has more with the images, suggests more than shows, I liked it more

Eu li o livro antes e ele eé muito mais pesado e asauatador. Mas ótimo filme, muito bem feito e fiel à história.

I've read the book first and it's so mich darker and grittier. But great movie anyway. Well done and faithful to the story.

The film has simple and very few dialogues but it knows where it goes and the ingredients to make an incredible movie.

I felt it dragged towards the end, but it's a wonderfully unique story, shot beautifully.

I thought this was going to be an exceptionally good horror flick and was very surprised and disappointed when it turned out to be a mediocre drama with some gory and brutal sequences.

To summarize the plot: when the 12-year old vampire girl Eli moves with a much older man (her father?) to a small town near Stockholm people start to disappear or are being found dead! A boy from the neighborhood, Oskar, who always gets beaten up by bullies at school, falls in love with Eli and nearly pays with his life for that and Eli leaves town. When some of the bullies nearly kill Oskar, Eli helps him by killing the bullies and the two of them leave town together.
