Lost in Translation was a slow but beautiful movie. It's pretty understated and subtle, with very nuanced performances by Scarlett Johansson (whom I don't usually like; apparently she was 19 when she made this) and Bill Murray. Probably one of the best romance movies I've seen, though definitely not for everybody.
This movie really got to me. I was really cheering for them to be together. I thought Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson were perfect. Great soundtrack.
Most overrated movie ever. Was entertaining at best.
It's a good movie, but certainly not the RomCom deconstruction that every critic has labelled it.
I really disliked it and found it a bit racist how they portrayed the Japanese in this movie and they did a poor job showcasing Tokyo's vibrance and color, especially when the city is like the 3rd character in the movie. A slow and boring movie for a place with such high-pace and energy like Tokyo... i don't know... it just doesn't fell right.
This film is a very overrated. It is not bad but it hasn't any outstanding moment.
Beautiful. This film really gets under the skin. These are real lost people and Johansson and Murray's chemistry is the best I've ever seen. The sheer joy and realness in those karaoke/party scenes are just unforgettable.
I wanna rate it 9, but the movie was really slow, so i guess 8 is fair.
Anyway, it was so beautiful, i mean this state of mind they were at was too relatable! I guess to be bored of your life, lose your passion, then lose yourself, all of that i've been through! i really like being alone, but as the movie clarified, it's a relief when you find someone that understands you, that you can share moments with him & then find what you really are.
It doesnt have to be a lover/bf/gf ,etc.... it can be a friend, someone you really love, however, he can be then the one you share your life with! who knows!
all of that i got from the movie, they obviously loved each other, and that evolved from love being together and talking with each other, it's not just about sex ffs! they shared the bed together talking, laughing, and watching a movie! that's what you need when you are lost.
but they hid their feelings, for so many reasons, age difference was one of course, she brought that up when she was obviously jelaous that he had a one night stand!
it's a very complicated situation, only if u feel how they feel u can understand why they loved each other when they found each other.
Anyway again, the movie was slow, no much for the script, but the cinematography & the cadres! WOW! amazing, i literally took 167 capture of the movie! the music was also good.
For the acting, SUPERB, Bill was really funny and broken! no many actors can pull this off.
Scarlett! i mean Young Scarlett! how cute, sexy & beautiful she is! she did a really good job in this one, loved her.
The Ending scene tho! i almost had tears when he hugged her & she cried! it was perfect.
Hopefully it'll stay lost in my recycle bin...for English..press 1
A slow moving but excellent film with some great cinematography, great soundtrack and incredible performances.
Just a beautiful movie, perfect casting, fantastic script and beautifully shot.......perfect!
When hollywood writes lonely characters looking for a purpose the clichés can be extreme coldness, laying in a big bed sprawled out, looking out at the big world from a poxy little window, and they're all present in this. It's the usual hammy portrayal of isolation. subtle? More unsubtle in the over subtle nature. Bill makes it goofy and for once I don't think his style gelled, although it was OK on its own. Alll the scenes just feel contrived in creating whatever feeling Coppola wants to force down your throat. That primary goal of the movie seems to be to be taken serious, which is reflected in the lighting, music, and tone. Obviously it's got the arty tag so critics love it.
One of my favorite movies of all time. It's amazing.
Beautiful. The chemistry between Murray and Johansson is palpable.
I’ve long said that Lost in Translation is the key film of my adult life. It spoke to me at 21, and it speaks to me now, in a way that few other works of art have been able to do. To me, the film is a meditation on existential loneliness, on feeling spiritually adrift in a world that is confusing, hostile, and unloving. Sofia Coppola’s Tokyo is an alien land of garish neon filmed with a lens that heightens the sense of insomnia and displacement the characters face. Each character is lost–Bob is aging, doing foreign whiskey commercials and in the twilight phase of his marriage. Charlotte is newly married and already regretting it, with a degree in philosophy and no immediate prospects. I find this depiction of alienation to be immensely moving for a number of personal reasons.
But what I love about this movie is what it has to say about the redemptive capacity of human connection. Nothing base, or lurid–there’s no sex here, and only the faintest hint of any romantic feelings. No, the human connection here is more deeply felt–it’s a connection between two souls in pain. Souls that maybe can’t articulate what is missing in their lives until they find a complement that immediately casts the rest of the world into sharp relief. The world may be an ugly place, full of vapid Hollywood actors, carpet swatches, and Pachinko parlors–but when two people meet and fill a void in each other’s life.. To me, that makes life worth living. And so do films like this. I love, love, love this movie.
This movie reminded me of all the trips I took while I was in college. While I was abroad I didn't really care about my life back in my city and was freer. The neon lighting of Tokio gave the movie a cyberpunkish feeling. I could relate to everything the characters were doing in the movie.
One of the best movies that exist.
brilliant movie, but best thing to do is watch it in the middle of the night/drunk/st*ned to be in the right mind set :)

Touching, beautiful and unique, filmed via aesthetically pleasing cinematography. A film that'll fill your heart and then break it to pieces.
My all time favourite. Brilliant. I can watch it as many times as it airs on any channel.
Two beings lost in Japan, lost in the distance.
Excellent actrice
Humour, love and melancolie.
Everytime I watch it again, it touches me.
wonderful movie - it should be on your 'must watch' list.
I dont know what happened whis this movie and its so overrated. But i was really freaking bored as hell 6/10 only for godness Scarlet..
The Perfect Love Story
Okay so what's to say about this film that hasn't already been said...?
Let's do pros and cons...
Pros - Bill Murray being himself (all sarcastic and nonchalant); Scarlett Johannson being adorable, playing such a young woman struggling to find a direction in life; the coldness of a land where it is so foreign to our own, with strange customs and an impenetrable language; a cool soundtrack.
Cons - it takes about 10 minutes longer than I'd want to have the 'meet cute'; it offers up an image of men that isn't true - not every guy wants to f**k her just because she's there. This character did but that doesn't mean we all would; her actions toward the end are too cold, it doesn't gel with the rest of the film.
That said... it makes Japan a place to visit - and I'd imagine a hundred thousand Western tourists have used this movie to break the ice with a familiar face when visiting there.
I enjoyed it a lot. I liked the whole cast and I loved what it showed me of Japan. It could be a slightly faster pace with a little more storyline once they become pals.
For this part, I feel it suffers on rewatching and isn't aging as well as reputation would have you believe.
7/10
I can't understand the good scores of this movie, is just plain and boring.
As a translator I was expecting something completely different too because of movie name.
Not sure what I can say that hasn't already been said here. Except... was anyone else getting Wes Anderson vibes??
I can’t believe how overrated this film is. 1/10
This is such a beautiful movie. At first it seemed kind of slow to me but then it picked up and if I could have my first time watch of this again I would cause of how sweet and empty it made me feel at the end. Everyone should watch this.
Somehow I had never heard of this movie until it appeared in my Movie Club picks of the week. It’s so subtle, so unorthodox, but so beautiful. It’s not going to work for everyone, but those that it works for will love it. Absolutely incredible performances by the two leads that really showcase why the two either were or would go on to become some of the greatest actors/actresses of their respective generations.
Rating: 4.5/5 - 9/10 - Highly Recommend
Beautiful in every way imaginable. Tragic, escapist and unexpectedly innocent.
This was a good movie, mostly because of the chemistry between Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray. Reminded me of the Before movie trilogy.
Meh. Slow, boring, but beautiful to look at.
An experience in a far away place from home - where you aren't yourself - but who are you really?
One of the movies I re-watch every year.
I always liked Bill Murray. Now I've seen all of his movies since the beginning of his career.
