A fairly uneven bag of tricks, but for a first attempt, Gosling shows he has a real eye and could go on to great storytelling. Some gorgeous visuals, score and symbolism. It's just not mixed together perfectly, like many other first attempts it seems he was just trying to hard to pay homage to too many different sources at once.
Wanted to watch this because of Saoirse Ronan and Ben Mendelson.
What a waste of time.
This is one of those movies I get absolutely nothing out of. It´s the director-had-a-vision kind where a relatively simple story is blown out of proportion and told in overcomplicated pictures that are supposed to be artistic. OK, I get there are people out there who like that kind of stuff. I don´t.
Visually interesting but I'm not quite sure what I just watched here! Bizarre to say the least.
It's a different movie, and a really cruel one too. The photography is beautiful: the neon lights mostly. The soundtrack is a jewel.
