I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I love seeing Octavia Spencer doing something different. Diana Silvers was great. Some ok teen drama stuff and the third act is good with a few ridiculous moments.
It’s okay. Nothing remarkable. It was entertaining but anything horror-like as shown in the trailer doesn’t come until the third act of the movie. Everything up to that is build up. If you’re here for gore and plenty of it then look elsewhere. If you want some entertainment and don’t mind throwing $10 out then see it. I’d say wait until you can rent it to watch it. It will be better if you don’t spend above $5 to see. Still, it is not a terrible movie or anything. Just nothing new. One good thing is that there’s a reason for Ma doing what she does instead of just being another random, forgettable killer. So there’s that at least.
octavia spencer really carried that movie on her back huh
Well that was a crazy basement party with a slow start with a little Misery and The Act brought to the party and I liked it! Good performance from MA (Octavia) she definitely carried that cast.
Octavia Spencer, Diana Silvers, and McKaley Miller make a lot of great faces, but this is maybe one of the least inventive horror movies I've ever seen - the only surprises are non-sequiturs, the characterization is... extremely thin, and the pacing is completely off, with essentially no tension until the final act. The director has said in interviews that the origin of this movie is him saying to the president of the studio "Dude, I want to do something really fucked up" and yes, this is the kind of movie that you get when that pitch is enough to get a movie rolling and the director that makes the pitch... has never attempted fucked up before. Octavia Spencer signed on before she'd read the script because she got to play a character that kills a bunch of people, and... yes, that also shows.
Whoever did hair for Diana Silvers, though, that was the thing that took this movie from two stars to three - it's so exactly the correct mix of hairstyles for a slightly naive 15-year-old itching for a little more differentiation from her mom in a new town. (Everybody's hair in this movie, actually, is believable and expressive of the character - significantly more than the dialogue.)
Horrible movie, but Spencer sure give good act
Mixed feelings about this movie! Super creepy and I love Octavia Spencer in this role. Parts came off pretty corny though.
I really wanted this to be great. Octavia Spencer given a chance to be a creepy, unhinged villain? Sure! A supporting cast with Juliette Lewis and Allison Janney? Awesome! Alas, it just wasn't meant to be. What killed this for me is that the group of kids at the center of the movie I rarely cared that much about. And the drama around the adult characters and how their school days traumatic experiences drove "Ma" to be the crazy she is today? Eh... whatever. Spencer does play a great creep, but beyond that there's not a ton for horror junkies to latch onto. It's fine for a genre piece, but feels like a wasted premise.
Gives you the chills as MA is properly shattered
This movie is amazing really good horror thriller film to watch so creepy that it gives you the chills as MA all she wanted is people to like her, nevertheless she finds the kids of the parents that bullied her badly when she was younger, where she does an underage booze run then sets up a party in her basement where the only rule is not to go upstairs into as she calls it messy house in the middle of nowhere with no houses or other people about to see and report what she is up to. Octavia Spencer has done an amazing job as MA her acting is on point that it really something different for her as she tends to play nice down to earth characters, where MA is just extremely shattered from being bullied, she enjoys being in control and being the centre of attention. All the while trying to stalk the kids and their parents and trying to get back at their parents in the meantime who bullied her viciously as kids. She also has a condition of Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy where she as a vet nurse tries to use her skills from that job to self medicate especially when it comes to her daughter as she thinks her daughter has something really wrong with her and the doctors do not see it yet MA gives her daughter in perfect health vets medications in her eyes to try and make her daughter better, which is a symptom of this mental disorder, that is caused from her being shattered with humiliation by the kids parents when they were kids. Diana Silvers has done an amazing job too with her phenomenal acting is so on point her character is suspicious of MA from the start where she frequently asks questions about MA being too good to be true, which it comes in handy to protecting them in turn ends up saving their lives before it is too late. Overall loved this movie really gives you the chills while watching it, nevertheless I highly recommend you watching it if you have spare time on your hands you will be so impressed and not regret it. Also Well done to the amazing cast and crew for putting this masterpiece together.
The build up was so slow I nearly fell asleep, it wasn't worth the wait.
Ma is not so much a horror film as it is a crime scene, because this is where a nice idea is brutally massacred by sloppy writing and torn to shreds by lazy directing. And then they butcher the careers of Octavia Spencer, Juliette Lewis, and Allison Janney!? Films like this are the real threat to cinema because they make Netflix originals look good.
What the fuck was that?! It was so so ... Bad.
First off, I am a big fan of Octavia Spencer and it was cool to see her do something a little different. Unfortunately though 'Ma' was just a run of the mill average 'horror' although I use that term loosely it felt more like a thriller.
It was watchable but it was just the type of movie you watch once and forget about it, interesting enough to watch to the end.. but just nothing to shout home about and tell everyone about the next day! As others have said most of the good stuff is at the end but it's just not enough to save it.
Honestly I'm not going to lie at first I was bored after all it was just the beginning but stuff got crazy bro ma really needs some help
Man was this a messed up movie. I know it's not as messed up as others, but it's a little disturbing. Octavia Spencer was really good. Just because she was treated like that in High school, doesn't mean she had to do that to the teens. If it was on the people who actually did it, then I would understand. Decent movie to watch for a first time.
This whole movie feels like a Twitter shit post, which turned out to be true after its release but in my opinion, not the enjoyable kind.
Suspension of disbelief required - in what universe with 16yos party with a 40+ yo woman and not find it creepy, have her hit on them and touch them and then go back?
Octavia faces that amazing girl from Space Force and Juliette Lewis in her usual role. I she has completely innocent to me until she decided to listen to earth wind and fire while driving
Definitely NOT a horror, definitely ALL creepy and uncomfortable as fuck.
Octavia Spencer carried this movie and she did so greatly. Sue Ann is scary to watch and I was wondering when she's snap. The backstory made her creepily understandable in a way, I didn't feel sorry for the grown ups in this movie but those kids, damn. The ending felt a bit rushed and over the top, trying to see how much gore and shock could be fitted into a single scene.

DOUBLE THUMBS DOWN
1/10 THE 1 IS FOR LUKE.
Felt a little rushed towards the end, but overall, I enjoyed it. In the wrong hands this could have been trashy, and while its hardly high art, it is a cut above other psycho thrillers. Of course, this is partly down to the subtle performance of the wonderful Octavia Spencer.
Good switch up from the usual black Mammy image to make it more broad. Interesting to see Octavia in a completely different role.
I hate to rate it a 4, especialy with these fantastc actresses which i always love to see. They did also. ccause the inmade it fantastic, but somehow the telling of the story was boring....... and that is what i really don't like. It did not raise awareness as i guess it was meant to
The first 2 acts are terrible, shit is very boring, but then it got a little better when she hit that bitch with her car , and then the whole third act was aight, so it was whatever to me:person_shrugging_tone3::male_sign:
JOKER (2019) wishes it had the cultural and international impact that MA (2019) does.
That absolute curveball of a scene where Ma runs over a jogger, calls her a "fucking cunt" then cranks up the Earth, Wind & Fire makes up for the other 98 minutes and 45 seconds of meh.

Not a lot happens for the majority of the film but it gradually builds up the suspense and you definitely feel yourself getting more and more uneasy by the minute. The ending is over and done with waaay to quick, and we could have had a little longer to enjoy all the drama and action, to say we sat through 90 minutes of 'not a lot' but I like the backstory of it, too so that saves it in a way.
I think the film's story line was pretty good. They may have gotten a little lazy in tying it all together in the end. With that said the end wasn't as fulfilling as the lead up was for me at least.
Don't even consider to waste your time on this one, one of the most awful movies of 2019, so much cringe, horrible acting, bad soundtrack, bad everything.
Not the kind of "horror" i was expecting.
If its horror, it's so bad i believe is Netflix original.
Its a kind of movie to watch in the couch on lazy sunday afternoon.
How some crap makes it to the big screens is beyond me. This defintely falls in that category.
