Make Way for Tomorrow 1937

Wow, absolute heartbreaker. This drags a bit in the middle, but comes together for a transcendant final third. Following a roughly similar plot to Tokyo Story (one of my favorites), this one is worth watching for the performances of all the older characters: Lucy, Bark, even Max. There's a felt sense of naturalism to the performances that feels generationally distinct from all the younger folks in the movie that pulled me in as a viewer and made me care about the characters. By the end I was a mess.

“Oh, never-mind what we thought.”

a realistic exploration of the mundane powerlessness that comes with aging that while somber, wasn’t bleak and without hope.

quite sentimental—the subject matter almost calls for it—but it works.
really enjoyed the beginning and seeing the parents try to adjust to life apart; the friendship the father made and the connection the mother had with the granddaughter was wonderful.

film started to drag in the middle but finished strong.
