Marina Abramović: The Artist Is Present 2012

The film follows the artist as she prepares for what may be the most important moment of her life: a major retrospective of her work at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. To be given a retrospective at one of the world's premiere museums is, for any living artist, the most exhilarating sort of milestone. For Marina, it is far more - it is the chance to finally silence the question she has been hearing over and over again for four decades: 'But why is this art?'

I'm glad I watched this. The only thing I knew about her previously was that she sat on a chair opposit strangers for a hell of a long time. The documentary gives a good overview of her previous work (which the exhibition was also about) and captures the effect her centerpiece had on the audiece nicely. The only odd thing for me was about an hour in where it cuts to a newsreport on Fox about how Lady Gaga's new video was considered shocking but Marina's piece with the "nude doorway" should be art - that somehow took me out of it as where I belived that the documentary was over only for it to go another 30 minutes (which includes her changing up the performance).
