Slow to start and almost alienating, but stick with it, and you will discover the hidden secrets of the Marrowbone children. By the end, I was gripped, and was rewarded with a quite unexpected story.
The setting does not get what it should, create a claustrophobic environment. the script is too predictable and the development is too linear. Disappointing
Holy shit, I was not expecting such an intelligent and subversive plot from a cheap horror flick. Everything that feels like a plot-hole or a piece of lazy writing is actually a subtle clue, and the moments where I finally understood each clue while laying in bed or taking a shower the following morning was so exciting.
A great story but unfortunately a very lifeless and bad film. The only thing that is good about the film is the end of the film and the revelation of a story that is shocking but at the same time easily predictable. It's a shame if the film was better directed and a little more action with better and scarier masks, it could be a very good film. Unfortunately, it did not happen and thus the film became a boring experience.
It took me some time to finally watch this one, and I'm glad I did! A slow burner that keeps you interested throughout its duration with good performances, especially by MacKay and Matthew Stagg.
Very slow thriller with a great atmosphere and an amazing cast. Surprised i'd never heard of it until now. I can see people having a hard time getting through it sinse it's very slow but it has a great twist at the end that I didn't see coming and hit me right in the feels.
Not too shabby, might watch again someday
This is definitely not a horror as the listing states which is a shame because that was the reason I watched it. It’s a slow burn mystery/thriller with an ending I predicted ahead of time. Despite that, it was still pretty suspenseful and enjoyable, mostly because the ending wrapped up the story well. I felt like the movie’s takeaway as a result of those last few scenes was the power of unconditional love, particularly the importance of loving someone in spite of their mental or physical challenges.
SOOOO GOOD!!!!! amazing plot, REALLY great [ :( ] ending, and perfect cast. It has everything
OH MAN! I would never ever move into a creepy old house. Ghost scare you, the building's structure is unstable. What's the point? Scary movie for sure. I was so scared that I screamed and shouted in my hood. My ppl thought that i was a paranoid ghostbuster for real for real. MAAAN this sheeyit is horror scary. BE AWARE!!!
Nice plot twist great atmosphere and great perfomances too.A really good movie worths a watch for sure 7.3/10
Marrowbones reluctance to pick a genre ends up costing its greatest reveal, severely hampering its closing act. By the finale I was confused by what was supernatural and what was real, leaving me to pick up the pieces while the credits rolled rather than during the peak of its climax. Still, what is here is very well made with an intriguing mystery of a story that kept me hooked throughout, I just felt some of the main beats were missed due to some shoddy explanation and poor conveyance during pivotal moments.
A great film with a unexpecting ending that hit me right in the feels.
With social media constantly bombarding us with instantaneous updates about the everyday occurrences of everyone's lives, it is extremely difficult to stay spoiler-free from any form of entertainment. Still, I do my best to steer clear of anything that may ruin a movie for me before I ever get a chance to see it for myself. Hell, sometimes I don't even read the synopsis plastered on the back of a home release's artwork/case because I just want to go into a film as blindly as possible. That is exactly what I've done here with Sergio G. Sanchez's thriller, Marrowbone.
Rose Fairbairn (Nicola Harrison) and her four children have started a new chapter in their lives, hiding away from their violent past. After Rose falls ill, eldest son, Jack (George MacKay, Captain Fantastic), must do everything in his power to keep the family together and away from any more pain. This becomes increasingly difficult as outside forces begin to take a toll on the entire family, in the form of a lawyer who won't give up and a haunting figure within the home itself.
I love my horror films full of gore and a high body count, but there is something quite refreshing about watching a film with neither of those things that can still deliver some intense feelings of suspense and dread. Marrowbone does just that; It is a film full of twists and turns that even the most keen movie buff will be surprised by.
While I wouldn't say the cast is a star-studded one, there are enough familiar faces here to get fans excited before the opening credits even begin. Anya Taylor-Joy (The VVitch, Split), Charlie Heaton ("Stranger Things), and George MacKay ("11.22.63") are just some of the talented performers you will see throughout the film's 110 minute runtime. I was incredibly impressed with every single actor involved in this film, which really played a huge role in keeping my attention during some of the slower parts of Marrowbone. The family dynamic between all members of the Marrowbone siblings is endearing and I loved watching each of their unique personalities bring something different to their extraordinary situation.
Marrowbone is a thriller with some supernatural elements very early on. It is a ghost story; it is a psychological thriller; most importantly, it is a great film.
I am unfamiliar with writer and director, Sergio G. Sanchez, but I will certainly be on the lookout for any future projects he may be involved with. Marrowbone is a film that everyone should be talking about, yet I see no discussions or rumblings about it online. It is a shame really and I hope that this review will get at least a few more people watching and talking about it. The acting is superb, the storytelling is innovative and creative, and the amount of twists will keep you on your toes the entire time the film is rolling. I wish I could say more about how the movie unfolds, but I don't want to run the risk of giving away too much.
If you are looking for a fresh take in the thriller genre, I highly recommend placing Marrowbone at the top of your to-watch list. I promise you will not be disappointed.
There is too much not enough in Marrowbone, which is basically a ghost story with no ghosts, where we don't know what we're meant to be afraid of so we aren't.
