Martyrs 2008

A stomach wrenching movie. It's really well done and it really makes you think.

Such a haunting experience Martyrs is. It'll haunt you. It is still one of the most unsettling films I've ever seen, even on this rewatch in which I knew what would happen, it was still hard to watch during some scenes. Especially the second half of the film. You kind of feel what Anna goes through. And when the movie is finished, you'll know you will be haunted by it for days.

These New French Extremity films are just something else. They take things to a whole new level. It is not for everyone. But I do believe if you like horror movies you have to watch Martyrs. It is one of the best movies coming out of the New French Extremity movement. With great visual effects, great acting and a good enough story to get you hooked. Just try to watch something light after, it is what I'm going to do now.

really ?

Martyrs delivers an intriguing and original concept but doesn't quite reach its full potential. It borrows a page from Terrifier's playbook by dispatching the superior actress early which leaves a noticeable performance void. The third act hits a bit of a lull, but rebounds with a gripping and shocking climax that's sure to leave an impression. While it may not fully flesh out (no pun intended) its premise, Martyrs is worth a watch for horror fans looking for a unique and unsettling experience.

Dissapointed. At 35 minutes you still don't know what's going on beyond the few layers of plot presented. It's not because it's a mystery, it's because of a lack of plot development and story telling. What's do we get as entertainment? Violence with a shaky camera (did you expect a proper atmosphere ), and a dollop of cliché mental instability, with all the hallucinations and screaming that comes with that? Yawn inducing characters. To make it even more dull, scenes often go on way too long. That's because they needed to fill the time up due to a paper thin plot. But as long as there's a distressed unwashed bloody girl in shot, it's watchable right? Then the end. When the story actually progresses on a bit. Or does it? It's one of those movies that gets a good score because of hype. Pointless, stupid and boring.

A movie you see one time...a really hard one...

This was surprisingly mediocre. I guess I expected more given its reputation. The film takes you in right from the start with the beautifully haunting opening scene. It grabs my attention immediately. The first half of it, the home invasion part, is what makes me stick with this film. The way it's shot and the sound design just makes your skin crawl. It's just so well done, enthralling, and brutal that I was so sure that this would be my new favorite horror film, but then the quality keeps on decreasing after that, losing my interest. Once the core idea is revealed, it seems to me like it's tacked on as an afterthought in attempt to elevate the film from being just a torture porn, but ends up making it less effective. I still think this is an interesting film that more people need to see. There's a lot of torture scenes in this, though not in an excessively gory sense, they still are uncomfortable and unsettling to watch.

I was expecting “Martyrs” to be one of those torture porn movies with lots of shock value just for the sake of it, but I actually appreciated the attempt to elevate the disturbing scenes into something functional to the narrative. Laugier knew that he couldn’t just torture women for 90 minutes straight, and tried to add as many ingredients to the pot as possible. Some worked, some didn’t. The first half in particular felt a bit all over the place. Still, the direction and cinematography are miles ahead of what you’d expect from a recent low-budget horror.

I rated this movie super high, almost exclusively for the ride it took me on. I agree with what many others have said about the movie, but that never stopped me from being thoroughly entertained, start to finish. Martyrs has its share of problems, but it was a hell of a fun ride!

Pretty hard to see, I have seen stupid justifications, but the one here takes the cake

whether it's a good movie or not, it's an awful horror movie.

That was kinda disappointing, the ending specially, not a bad movie though

Even though "Martyrs" is undoubtedly a very well-made and well-acted horror film, it lost me towards the end. Then the violence became too repulsive for my taste, without any real consequences for the perpetrators. In the first two thirds, however, director Pascal Laugier definitely succeeds in building up a mystery. At the same time, he is not stingy with explicit splatter effects, but unlike most other horror projects, they are not meant to elicit a joyful reaction from the viewer. The film is really deadly serious throughout, and that works for the entire runtime. The final third is probably a matter of taste in terms of content; for me, it detracted significantly from my overall enjoyment. In any case, you shouldn't expect any morality from the story. Nevertheless, "Martyrs" is still a good film overall.

Dude !! What did I just watch ??

Horror is generally not my thing but watched this to get a sense of new French extremity (or whatever the genre is called).

I thought the story was a bit dumb and fast forwarded through the last 20 minutes. i was watching an english language dubbed version which sounded horrible and I’m sure that detracyed from the movie. I did appreciate parts of it - nice set, convincing performance from the lead actress etc.

That was a hard watch, and that ending. Jesus Christ that was a unique movie. I recommend it to anyone that wants to be disturbed & shocked.

Well shot, directed and edited but the script leaves a lot to be desired.

Story just isn’t that interesting.

3 Thoughts After Watching ‘Martyrs’:

  1. This film joins the short list of films that I will never, ever watch again. Not because it was bad, but because it was completely devoid of any viewer satisfaction. It was a compelling and thought-provoking journey, but not one I wish to repeat.

  2. That last “step” for Anna was absolutely horrifying. I wasn’t expecting that.

  3. The craziest aspect of this movie for me — beyond the relentless brutality — was the shift that happened after Anna discovered the house’s secret. Because you spend the first half of the film thinking that Lucie’s actions were completely born of delusion and insanity. Not so much.

There comes a time when the film becomes simply unpleasant and difficult to watch. The rawness of what is seen, and the suffering you imagine, prevents you from appreciating any artistic value.

First two acts were pretty fantastic, third act was sloppy filler.

This movie is just violence and nothing else. I didn't like it

it was just okay.

I think it was hyped up too much, the storyline was good though

This was an interesting movie to watch. The story-line kept changing. You never knew where it was taking you next. I would not call the changes in the story-line twists but more like it takes you into a whole new, but similar, direction. I believe this was an Unrated or NC17 movie. It's primarily the violence and horror that makes it that way. This movie is definitely not for everyone!!
