This movie is Payneful to watch

Not sure what everyone else has been disappointed about. For entertainment it was great to watch with some Sin City'ness style. Leave your reality meters at the door and grab some popcorn

Mila Kunis is the lemon zest on this leftover fish stick dinner fresh from the microwave. She's the only thing that gives this reheated mess any flavor, but sadly there's not enough of her present to make a difference.

Not completely without style (it smacks a bit of a colorized Sin City), the story is as predictable as the runs after microwaved fish and is as badly written as the cooking instructions on the box at the back of the freezer.

This was, I think, the first videogame adaptation I didn't think was terrible. Sure, it's not an Earth-moving story, it's all flash and style over substance, but so was the game, so it's a perfect fit. Max Payne, the game, was entirely based on the attempt to cash in on the hype around The Matrix and bullet time, and a hyper version of Neo Noir. Fittingly, cinematography and lighting in Max Payne, the movie, are impressive, and they really studied the style of the game well. The dark alleyways and dilapidated buildings, the city skyline in the distance, the snow falling – I could enjoy watching that and soaking up that mood for hours, no plot is even needed! Wahlberg does a decent job, and I always enjoy seeing Beau Bridges and Donal Logue. Good soundtrack, too. It felt strange giving this more than a 7, but I can't really see much that the film does wrong. Mood and special effects are all it's about, and I appreciate that it doesn't pretend to be more than that.

the beginning was promising, but it got worse by the minute.

This movie is “fine”. It certainly falls into the poor video game film adaptation genre. I enjoyed my time with it as a fan of the IP, but there’s not much meat on the bones to really draw in a bigger audience.

Rating: 2/5 - 65% - Not Recommended to Everyone

I think I thought this was a fun movie when I was young but damn, was I wrong then. The plot is horrible, the acting is like everyone involved just came in for a quick payday. I have played a tiny bit of Max Payne back in the day but even for a videogame movie this is just a horrible adaptation. They just took the name and a tiny bit of character background and made it into a horrible revenge movie. And that slap! Was that? Also I think I have never seen Mark Wahlberg act so wooden.

Anyway, the only saving grace, is if you can call that, is that they at least put effort into how the movie looks. But I could have started off my day better by choosing a different movie.

Based on the popular video game, Max Payne is a bizarre revenge thriller. After discovering a link between the murder of a Russian girl and the unsolved murders of his wife and child, NYPD detective Max Payne goes rogue in order to find those responsible. Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis lead the cast, but neither of them are any good. And the script is garbage; inexplicably mixing in supernatural elements that just don't work. Additionally, there are problems with the tone of film; as the gritty cop drama clashes with the surreal visual aesthetic. Falling victim to the video game curse, Max Payne is a convoluted mess that fails to live up to its source material.

This movie was a huge dissapointment if you've ever played Max Payne or are even familiar with it's story. It would not having been that bad if it was some random action movie with a completely different name.

I think I was expecting too much after playing the game like a zillion times. It just doesn't stand up to the game. I think if they had cutscenes like the ones in SinCity, it would have been fun.
