What an amazing movie..brad Pitt at his pure talent and Anthony Hopkins is one hell of an actor.....
The ending was a little abrupt and without a lot of meaning, but overall, it had a nice touch to it :)
My favorite romantic movie ever!
I WANT MY 3 HOURS BACK!!!! WAY TOO LONG.
I disliked the love story and it was way too long and drawn out.
I wore out my VHS copy of this movie and lent out my DVD copy so many times, it’s amazing it found its way home. It is on my Favourite Movies of the 1990s list, my Movies Watched Multiple Times list and my Movies to Watch Again list. Now, it is one Netflix, where I just watched it for some uncountable time. This movie plays romance beautifully. It takes its time. Anthony Hopkins performance is stately and rich. I truly believe that this movie would have fallen short if it had not had Claire Forlani’s performance of vulnerability and soulful longing. And, then, there is a young Brad Pitt, a strikingly handsome, beautiful man. He was criticized for his wooden portrayal but they missed the point. His acting was on point as he moved seamlessly from an idealistic young man facing a new life that was full of possibilities, to the embodiment of a dangerous and isolated entity seeing life for the first time through its beautiful vulnerabilities. The supporting cast is excellent. The music is perfect. This film is always a straight up 10 out of 10, for me. [Drama, Fantasy, Romance]
yes really good storry of the both of them super acting of Brad & Hopkins Amazing very nice ......continu to acting so hehe .... : )
I loved it. Especially Anthony Hopkins character, and the music. The music was just great. And let's not forget the fireworks! <3
i actually really liked this, gave me a good laugh at some points too :)
This movie has always been a favorite of mine. It’s pretty long so I don’t watch it very often but I always enjoy it when I find the time. I think the story is very cute overall and it’s fresh, which is what I like about any movie, and the characters are all likable except for the protagonist of course.
A lot of people comment about how bad this is, but I respectfully disagree (rather than the toxic way the people tend to disagree with criticism on this site and the more toxic way Trakt allows it). The acting is quite good, the story might not be for everyone and there’s no action at all, just a light and dark drama that explores an interesting question of “what if death offered you a bit more time on this earth to show him around?”.
A couple people mention the Jamaican accent and how stupid it was, but it always made sense to me because death is something different for everyone and is everywhere and at all times, so why wouldn’t he speak in a way that is perfectly clear to those spoken to? I actually found it entertaining and a bit funny to see this blonde haired blue eyed Brad Pitt talking like that, and I think he did it quite well! When the movie starts, death talks to Parrish in Parrish’s own voice, but once he shows himself in Brad Pitt’s body the mannerisms and patterns are the same, only the tenor of his voice changed, so talking to the Jamaican woman, to me, is identical, except he’s in Joe’s body, if he wasn’t then the lady would presumably hear her own voice, and it would have the accent.
This was made when entertainment was entertainment, there was no narrative to prop up, no agenda to push, just a story told over a few hours that keeps you tuned in, I wish there were more like this today.
This movie caused me to get an instant crush on Claire Forlani, she is a beautiful woman and the role she plays is very cute, even in subsequent roles it comes out that she seems to be like this in real life.
My Content Analysis
Acting: :star::star::star: (Average)

The great thing about this film is its music by Thomas Newman.
At best and on the surface "Meet Joe Black" is a tolerable film for pure entertainment, upon further inspection, a snail paced three hour patriarchal time suck.
I just had two major issues:
1) That Jamaican accent - the accent itself is actually pretty good, it's the context that's problematic. Sure, there is the faintest inference to Baron Samedi, Vodou Loa (spirit) of the dead (Death himself), in the use of Jamaican patois and the reference of "duppy", "spirit" and "obeah"... but that's not widely general knowledge. It wouldn't have come across so unsettlingly infantilizing if the inference were instead a direct reference, something overt so the audience wouldn't be confused by the sudden switch, instead it appears as though he's speaking to a child (he's literally standing above and talking down to her) almost mocking. Death has many names, they could have had the old lady just say it during her address to Joe (Baron Samedi) -simple fix.
2) Relegating the women to mere objects of service (constantly weeping, making things... preparations, food, notes, "love") added a tang of bitterness to this otherwise mostly pointless drama.
As someone else said, at least now I can tick it off my list.
I love this movie. Never have i ever seen a romantic story, where they're "almost" honest to each other. If course, Joe cannot reveal to Susan, who he really is.
One of the things i like most in the movie, are the looks between the two. The two most beautiful people in the world.
what the f is happening hahaha
It took me three nights to finish watching this work, but let me tell you: it was one of the best three hours of my life.
I've had several opportunities to see this masterpiece, yet my stereotypical personality, whenever I saw the length of the film, always put me on the back foot and I ended up not seeing it. Big mistake.
The film is praiseworthy in several aspects, namely, the direction, the cast and the performance of the three main actors (Anthony Hopkins, Brad Pitt and Claire Forlani).
When I started watching the film, I put my trust in the entire directing team that these three hours would not be wasted. This film is a plausible example that nothing could be done better. Martin Brest had the ability to hold me to the screen for three hours that felt more like half an hour.
As for the cast, they are all stars. Anthony Hopkins has his performance of the year. Silence of the Lambs... What is that next to this work? This is Mr. Hopkins' magnum opus.
Lately, I am aware that many movies I watch and want to watch are starring Mr. Brad Pitt. He is one of my favorite actors, so I was expecting more of a performance that would blow the scale even if it was just him playing the personalities he knows best: brash, cocky, and good with women. It definitely surprised me in a positive way. "Joe Black", before he was run over, is the typical Brad Pitt character: very glib and all the women fall in love with him. However, the "Joe Black" who vacations with Bill Parish is a totally different character than we have ever seen before. The childlike attitude that Death has is something totally new for Brad Pitt to play, and he does it perfectly. The faces and feelings that Brad Pitt shows as Death are easily understood by any viewer. I don't know what the preparation for this role was, but he nailed it. I actually burst out laughing with the dinner scene, the peanut butter and the first directorial meeting. Those scenes (and others I haven't mentioned) were truly hilarious.
Lastly, I mention, lightly, Claire Forlani. I already knew her from other roles, mainly in series like NCIS: Los Angeles, Hawai: Five-0 and CSI. I expected her best and honestly, I think she delivered it.
Finally, I would like to mention just one thought that occurred to me while writing the previous paragraph.
The plot is much more complicated than the synopses imply. You never really know what, how and when it will happen. The film puts its trust in very few characters, this, supposedly, would allow the viewer to guess the direction of the story. However, it is just the opposite. The story is so well conceived that, even with a small cast, it is hard to guess what is going to happen until the final minutes.
This movie is definitely going on my favorites list.
It is only fair that I give it a rating of 5/5
Hades descended to this vale of tears, but he did not kidnap Persephone, because he appreciated humans life. ;)
Lost treasure
I love this movie
10/10
This was… interesting. I felt like it missed the mark a couple of times, even though the premise was widely promising and engaging. It had me hooked for sure, from start to finish, which is a feat for 3 hour long films, but I felt myself cringe more times that I hoped for. At first, I thought the humour was a nice touch, but then it just turned strange - I mean the jamaican accent? what the hell was that?
Anyway, Anthony Hopkins was my favourite part about it, even if I couldn’t take my eyes off Claire Forlani. Brad Pitt was only okay, but that is more down to the way the character was written than his acting per se (the peanut butter bit was my favourite and I thought he was really cute with it. I also loved “Joe” and Susan’s meet-cute at the café and wish we had had more of them like that).
All in all, definitely happy I watched this. It added to my day, not the other way around.
The melding of music and acting...and story...have elevated, "Death and taxes," to a *romance that breaks my heart open. every time I see it...made all the more perfect by Claire Forlani.
*The romance between Susan and Joe, and between Bill and his life
It was too long, boring and absolutely horrendous. Such a waste of talents here, however Claire Forlani isn't a waste, cause she isn't a talent either... The conversations were just dumb and meaningless. Anyway, would 100% not recommend.

I liked the idea of the movie and it is definitely one you might enjoy if you don’t think too much about it.. However, here are a few issues I had with it:
I don’t really know how exactly to rate this movie but at least I can say I finally got that one off my watchlist.
