good performances but it didnt really interest me.
This film feels like such a missed opportunity in some ways. This had the making to be a great movie, but holy overacting. Faye Dunaway was extraordinary as Joan. If she had reigned it in a bit more and the film wasn't so melodramatic and over the top, she would have easily gotten a nomination (even a win). A brilliant performance let down by the direction and material. This film should have gotten Oscars for makeup, set design, and costume hands down. The ambiance and craftmanship is amazing. Captures the era perfectly!! -- Personally, I wish they had just ignored Christina's book and just did a straight-up biography, focusing on the early years of MGM and her career. Would have been way more interesting and intriguing, and would have made for a stronger movie. But for what it is, it's an enjoyable, silly camp classic. Definitely worth watching again and again.
