Love them or hate them, remakes are a part of every Horror Fan's life. So many remakes end up being so bad, that the word itself has become a sort of cinematic vulgarity that makes most of us cringe; honestly, we had to stop ourselves from slapping our computer screen when we read about the upcoming C.U.J.O. remake.
Aside from the worst of them, most Horror Remakes tend to be little more than unnecessary money-grabs that bring nothing new to the table, which leaves them middle of the road efforts at best. Every now and then though, a remake comes along that surprises us by being good, or dare we even say every bit as, or even better than, the original.
Not often, but it happens.
For the first 6 movies in the list:
If you're in the mood for a quality Horror Remake, any of the movies in our Top Six will do you right. For us, The Thing is the best of them, although The Blob will always be one our our favorite Horror flicks ever. Nevertheless, they all bring their own unique and terrifying vision to the world of Horror Remakes.
For the remaining:
Below are the rest of our "Best of" Horror Remakes, and of course, a few Honorable Mentions thrown in for good measure. Keep in mind that no "Best of" list is ever perfect, but merely a solid starting point for anyone looking to watch some great flicks.
The last 6 being "Honorable Mentions".

The genre survived in the 21st century thanks to the direct to the DVD market, the rise video streaming services and advances in digital filmmaking lowering the costs of making movies.
There was a short return to its exploitation roots, experimenting by new filmmakers, but mostly really bad low budget movies and remakes/reboots. Though there are a few gems to be discovered.
Genre definition: "Definition: A slasher movie is characterized by a villain who is skilled at killing and uses weapons other than firearms to stalk and target a group of young individuals, resulting in a significant number of victims. This villain may be either human or formerly human."
If I missed any movie you think that should be on this list or if you find some obvious mistakes please let me know and I'll make the appropriate adjustments.
Missing on Trakt:
- Texas Vibrator Massacre (2008) (IMDB: tt1225757)
Most Home Invasion flicks tend to involve some malevolent bastards forcing their way into a home, with the goal of terrorizing its occupants in mind. Sometimes they involve someone hiding in an attic or an upstairs room. Sometimes, it's a tiger that does the invading.
No matter what the scenario though, the average Home Invasion movie makes for an intense and terrifying ride. The above average ones make that ride even better.
For the first 6 movies in the list:
If you're in the mood for a truly quality Home Invasion flick, any of the movies in our Top Six will do you right. For our money, Inside and Them are probably the best of them, but then again they all bring their own unique and terrifying vision to the Home Invasion Sub-Genre, so enjoy them all!
