Notting Hill 1999

Romantic 90s movie with a great atmosphere. Recommended to watch with your significant other near Christmas.

Watched it for the first time 23 years after its release. I'm not a great fan of rom-coms. But this is a pretty good movie. It's fun and romantic. It's perhaps not as great as Pretty Woman but it's still pretty good. Of course you may spot a few parallels between these two movies. The plot is of course totally predictable, but I guess that's not the point in a rom-coms.

Dreamy Grant is actually, well, very British. Grant (and the borough) is as British as only American film makers can picture Britishness (hint: it's a fairy tale not a documentary about the contemporary inhabitants of London). Roberts is gorgeous. At times it feels that she plays herself. You really don't want to be famous.

It was my first time watching this film. It’s absolutely brilliant.

A typical British rom com nothing that special.

Other than the swearing and much too graphic flatmate, it was a charming movie with a perfect ending.

This movie gets me every time. I know it is "just" a classic romantic movie, but all the characters are very charming and funny and the story just feels so real. I know I will watch it again down the line.

It is a delightful movie full of the classical British wit that I always enjoy. It starts a bit rough around the edges, the roommate Spike is a disgusting character that I wish was not there, the soundtrack is a bit too on the nose and the very very ending is very very cheesy -- but it all fits for a 90s rom-com I must admit. On a positive note, it is fun, the dialogue is great and the side characters are quite interesting. And of course, Hugh Grant never looked so much of a baby girl as he did in this movie. Oh, those beautiful eyes of his... Instant movie crush!

Didn't really like the story or the characters, maybe just feels too out of date (to be fair it is indeed a movie from more than 2 decades ago). Still, the music and shooting We're very nice. The part of When You Say Nothing At All and Ain't No Sunshine are just terrifically and wonderfully done. It is indeed a classic for chick flicks, without doubt. Well love it or not, is something really depends on the audience I guess.

I enjoy it. Very light movie with great performance of Julia and Hugh. Watch it with your beloved

the flatmate is disgusting... zero chemistry between the leads and too sappy

This is a mom movie, which is fine because moms deserve movies too, but I don’t get anything out of it. It’s formulaic, commercial, sappy fluff aimed at people with the most boring sense of taste and humor. Julia Roberts gives a lackluster performance, she has no chemistry with Grant, visually it’s awful (literally every scene has the same shot/reverse shot set-ups) and the music choices are disgustingly tacky. Honestly, I have no idea what’s supposed to elevate this beyond countless other movies like it. There’s no special hook to this story or anything else, everything is predictable from beginning to end. At the very least I chuckled a couple of times during Crazy Rich Asians, and that movie put in some effort visually. This offers absolutely nothing in return, I wasn’t intrigued for a single moment.

One of the best rom-coms out there. Grant and Roberts are amazing together and you just gotta love the setting.

It's pretty rare to find a decades old romance movie where the male lead isn't a total asshole.

*22 years later and still excellent.*

This movie is 22 years old, but it's still the most enjoyable movie I've seen in ages.
Why can't they make movies like this again?

"Teach me the Magic of Wonder, Give me the Spirit to Fly" - John Denver

My score 7/10.
