Ouija: Origin of Evil 2016

There were a lot of surprisingly good things written and said about this prequel, especially given the harsh words for its predecessor. The late 1960's setting of "Ouija: Origin of Evil" helped to establish a feeling of disconnectedness for the characters that you just can't get from stories set in the present, given all the smartphones, tablets, computers, etc. that keep us constantly wired into things these days. The director played a few tricks that made the movie appear to be a relic from the same decade as well, but he seemed to forget about sustaining that feeling throughout.

The family was certainly likable and the relationship between the widowed mother of the girls and a priest from their Catholic school was cute and treated respectfully.

There are only a couple of jump scares even though there were many times I anticipated them to be coming. The only real scares came when a character would peer through the glass eye of the planchette. But thinking about it, the dark ending is pretty creepy and came as a real surprise given modern audiences and their distaste for any conclusions not tied up with a happy bow.

This is a pretty good one compared to the first movie and i really wonder why this one wasnt the start of this ouija series.
It gave off a feeling like conjuring.

The movies starts off really well. The acting is good and the story line is initially captivating. Half way through the movie it's seems like everything goes downhill, the story gets more and more far fetched, the acting starts to get hokie, it's like the director got to a point where he rushed to the end as fast as possible without regards to the viewer. It could have been done so much better.

Far superior to the previous film, it's unfortunately let down by the nature of being a prequel; we know where the pieces are all going to end up which takes away much of the tension.

I most certainly enjoyed this one. Terrifying as it is beautiful. Top notch!!

Much better than the first film, more of a storyline to it. The actresses are good, especially the girl who plays Doris (who is also one of the stars of the most recent Annabelle film!)

Good movie. Nothing new but still good. The movie has its moments. Btw I strongly suggest watching this one prior to Ouija (2014) which would make the latter one even more interesting. Go for it. 7/10

Started off ok, but ended up relying entirely on the same few (weak) jump scares, possession tropes and massive plot holes. Weak acting and writing. Decent direction and cinematography.
The more you think about this movie, the less sense it makes.

A lot of the "scares" involved CGI that just looked hilarious.

A good movie fun to watch..Nothing more nothing less!

Uses a lot of the expected gripes around this type of movie especially in the creepy kid category, but Mike Flanagan adds that extra care needed for it to stand out.

Horror for people who cry during Saturday tv movies. Starts ok and goes downward.

8.5/10
Such an underrated movie,
Super creepy and the younger sister sells it perfectly, wow what a great actress, just that smile and the look is enough, she comes
across so sinister.
She's beyond her
years in acting.
This movie deserves
more credit than it gets,
It has a good story and the pacing is good to, it moves along so smoothly.
Really good vfx to.
Although this came out second I do this one first it's better from a story telling point of view.
Right on with
Ouija

We have Mike Flanagan as the director here. Unlike his later films and TV shows (which are amazing), "Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016) was not that original and unique, but still - the story was well told; good jump scares and camera movement. The biggest Kudos goes to Lulu Wilson who makes one of the greatest child performances in the movie history. 1 star + here only because of her. Every scene she is in just kills it. Hope a bright future there will be for this actress. As for the rest of the cast - they are all familiar from the Flanagan's other movies and TV shows and they all do a good job :))

The movie can be scary at times, but the ending I didn't like which is a big minus + the story again - it was nothing original; just well told and paced.

Final Score: 6/10.

A little silly, a little creepy, fun watch and interesting background story. Not yet seen the first movie, Ouija

Awesome movie by Mike Flanagan. You definitely pick up on a lot his characteristics that you see crosses over into other projects he has been involved with.

This was pretty good actually. That's what you get for putting the story and pacing before cheap jumpscares. Which make the creepy parts more effective. Good performances from the cast.

Full of chills, Ouija: Origin of Evil is a frightful and disturbing horror film. The story follows a single mother in the late ‘60s who runs a séance business with the help of her two daughters, and when she incorporates a Ouiji board into her act her youngest daughter begins communing with the spirit world. Starring Elizabeth Reaser, Lulu Wilson, Annalise Basso, and Henry Thomas, the cast is a fairly good and gives strong performances; particularly Wilson, who really sells the spiritual possession. And writer/director Mike Flanagan does an excellent job at bringing intensity and suspense to the film. However, as a prequel its ending is already set and it’s restricted in what it can do. Still, Ouija: Origin of Evil is a compelling supernatural thriller that’s darker and scarier than the original.

Well then, this I didn't expect.

A massive improvement compared to it's previous garbage fire. Nothing that re-invent the horror genre, as it didn't anything new, but still manages to work in it's own favour. Beautifully shot and directed by Mike Flanagan with some genuinely creepy moments that worked better than jump scars. Surprisingly the kid actors weren't terrible and didn't break the movie.

The situation with "Ouija: Origin of Evil", a similar thing happened this year with "Annabelle: Creation". If it doesn't work the first time, try again.

Way better than I expected.

What do you get when you put the prequel to a cheesy cash grab into the hands of a competent director like Mike Flanagan? As it turns out, a pretty good, enjoyable movie that doesn’t rely on jump scares.

Is it anything mind-blowing? No. But it’s well worth the watch.

ONE OF THE BEST HORROR FILMS OF 2016

loading replies

The first movie was garbage, so this movie didn't have to do much to be an improvement. It's better, certainly, but no classic in the horror genre. Still, if anything, the film acts as another reminder to anybody the least bit tempted... don't mess with ouija boards, evil exists, and it shouldn't be messed with! Stick to Monopoly, seriously!

This is a well crafted supernatural horror flick, with some fantastic cinematography that loses its way slightly in the end. Could this be because of the fact it's a prequel? I haven't seen the first one so I'm not so sure?

Excellent! No jump scare at all (THANK GOD!) it gave me a chill down my spine, sometimes.
The plot is great, the acting is great too. the length of the movie it is precise, the movie flows naturally AND FINALLY some "smart" people on a horror movie: the older sister suggest that they "split" to search for the demon girl it's wrong (almost stupid)
nothing to complain in this first run. on a second watch, maybe I catch one or two "slips".

This was such a surprise. I haven't even seen the first Ouija movie because of all the terrible reviews and this prequel is very solid. There are a few clichés but the characters are built up enough that it keeps you engaged for the whole runtime. There are a few scary moments but I really appreciate the direction.

Surprisingly more terrifying and insane than both Conjuring films.

I was going to review this movie on IMDB but you have to write at least 1000 words & i can't write 1000 words about this movie because although its not the worst paranormal/horror ive seen its not the best by a long long way but theres 1 thing that really got up my nose about this movie & its when the elder sisters boyfriend hangs himself right in front of her she was upset for all of 20 seconds & then even made a joke of them all splitting up!
