The premise for the movie makes no sense. Really, it doesn't. If you can get past the shoddy neuroscience, you might be okay because then it's just a "big robots kill godzilla like creatures" movie.
It is very pretty to watch but long.
How can anyone not love a film about giant robots fighting giant monsters? Special effects have come on quite a bit since Robot Jox.
This is an anime in live action form. Lot's of fun! I love giant mech-bots and giant monsters, all fightin' each other- it's 2,000 tons of awesome...or awful. Y'know, whatever works for you (Newt's my fave and the tech-engineer guy, Clifton Collins, Jr's character)
There are a few things I take issue with in this movie, which made me not want to give it 10 stars because it wasn't 100% perfect; at the same time, though, I loved it a lot so I just don't feel right putting anything less than "totally ninja". Interested and excited to see how the sequel will play out. I need more Mako Mori in my life.
I don't think there's any way I can over-state my love for this film.

Was great seeing this back when it was at the pictures,have brought it on 4k Blu-ray and it looks amazing on my 65" 4K TV,great to see two great Actor's from Sons of Anarchy Charlie Hunnam and Ron Perlman in the movie and love the Australian element to it,it's a shame Charlie Hunnam didn't do the sequel.....

I believe you can't really listen to an album or watch a movie just once to decide whether you like it or not. There are rare occasions when I'll either love or loathe a film on my initial watch, but if I come away shrugging my shoulders, I'll try to see it again to coax my true opinions out.
I'm a giant monster fan. "King Kong" thrilled me as a child and still does as an adult, even though it was made in 1933. The original "Godzilla" and its sequels are among the most enjoyable movies I regularly watch. I know they're not really thought-provoking or examples of great acting or stories, but they are spectacles . You watch them to see giant beasts trampling the scenery. Razor-thin plots and ham-fisted dialogue are the norm and if you approach them with that in mind, they can be very enjoyable. This is exactly what I had to do with "Pacific Rim".
The first time I saw it in IMAX 3D. I had been looking forward to it for months. Movies featuring giant beasts don't come along every day. Superhero movies, yes. Kaiju, no. I have to say that my first go-round was disappointing. I couldn't follow the action, the characters were the cookie-cutter, "Independence Day" types, and the story was light to say the least. Worst of all, each battle seemed to be in the rain or in the water. Everything seemed dark and I couldn't get a sense of the scale of the beasts. The kaiju also seemed vacant of any personality at all. Bummed is the word I would say described my opening day viewing.
Then I kept hearing and reading that many people and critics enjoyed it. I gave it another shot but this time in 2D. Now, I don't know if I was in a bad mood on opening day, my expectations were too high or it was the 3D vs. 2D thing, but I really liked it the second time. I was able to follow the action much better and got a feel for how large the kaiju and mechs were. There were some great fight scenes, primarily during the second act. There were some tremendous scenes of awesome big things battling. The best moments for me were when the kaiju could be seen smashing through the city streets in the daylight. There were not nearly enough of these moments for my appetite, but when they did occur, I felt like a youngster all wide-eyed with mouth agape.
It's not worth carrying on about the plot. It was thin. Kaiju and Mechs fight and smash the crap out of each other and that is exactly why I watch these kinds of films.
Guillermo del Toro has not yet made a movie that I've disliked. He does a great job with the creatures he has a hand in creating and the worlds he creates are beautiful and awesome to look at.
My complaints about "Pacific Rim" is that there was too much focus on the Mechs or 'jaegars' and not enough on the kaiju. The kaiju didn't have enough screen time to leave any sort of personality or generate a great threat. They were interesting creations but seemed rather generic. I won't spoil anything by saying that the movie has an answer for why that is the case, but it still is disappointing.
If you've seen this movie once and came away unimpressed, you should give it another chance. A second screening sold me on del Toro's accomplishment of creating one of the coolest B-Movies you'll ever see.
A somewhat over-average sci-fi movie, but apart from it playing under sea against aliens - I didn't feel it was really outstanding. It was definitively watchable and enjoyable, however.

This movie has such a high rating from me for one reason, it honestly is one of the most fun movies I have ever watched. Yeah, it can be a bit cheesy at times but the movie knows what it is and I can respect that, it is a fun movie with robots fighting big monsters and in my opinion, it is a cut above most big monster films because the story is actually something you can get behind and all the actors have fun with their roles but with a few serious moments sprinkled in-between.
Also, it is shot absolutely beautifully as you can see all of the action involving both the robots and the monsters, its a shame that they could not get Guillermo del Toro on board for the sequel because he really does bring his all to this fun action film. The people involved with making this film (mainly the director and cinematographer) really need to be given the options to make either a Transformers films or Godzilla film as I feel they would do these franchises justice.
Give this film a watch and get ready for a really fun time.

Was not worth my time to watch such an overrated movie that clearly falls short in almost everything.
This movie is entirely cliches/tropes, but you never think it's tired or bad. The action scenes are great, the story is good (for a robots vs monsters action movie) and it all holds together with great style.
I loved it. Growing up as a fan of Gozilla films shown late night on Channel 4 in the U.K. and Mecha anime like Robotech aka Macross there was a good chance I would enjoy it but not a certainty as the abysmal Transformers film showed. I'm also a fan of Guillermo del Toro and he is probably the reason why the film works so well. He brings an attention to detail, feeling and humour that makes this film incredibly enjoyable; it's a simple action film that harks back to something older like 'Top Gun' rather than a more modern 'Inception'. We see well worn places and machines giving a feeling of realism with minor details adding to this like logos on the jaegars inspired by those from World War 2 bombers. There are archetypal characters but these are ones I cared for like in Star Wars, we also have the odd cheesy line in there too; I enjoyed their minor arcs and in particular the actress playing the young Mako was fantastic with her scene reminiscent of those from GDT's Pan's Labyrinth. Whereas Michael Bay turned a childhood series into a sleazy nonsensical mess, even in the context of giant robot beings, GDT brings a genre to life to meet it's full potential.
"A man's got to to do what a man's got to do" LOL, that line alone made the movie for me!

Knocking out an entire film's worth of back story before the opening credits, Pacific Rim doesn't waste any time in getting to the good stuff: thousand-foot monsters are swapping haymakers with their robotic counterparts inside of ten minutes. If you were expecting anything different, well, I'm not sure why because Pan's Labyrinth this ain't. It's exactly what the promo materials promised: a big-budget SFX sandwich with a dense layer of sci-fi sensibility spread through its guts. Hold the subtlety and nuance.
Fans of the classic monster movie will be, no doubt, tickled to see the evolution of that format (though some of these beasts are so foreign and complex, it's often tough to distinguish up from down amidst the mayhem of a fight scene) but I was somewhat puzzled by its herky-jerk pacing and weird sense of identity. It's a tale that can't choose between serious action and gaudy eccentricity, so it tries to move in both directions without luck. Likewise, I had difficulty looking past the odd jumble of TV stars mashed together at the center of it all, drawn from very different sources and plunked down together in a series of comically mismatched back-and-forths. The action is good, and abundant, but the plot is quite thin and the core characters are all basic caricatures. It's worth a watch, but only as a home theater demo or a simple bit of drunken escapism.

Robots hit monsters. Am I meant to care? Guillermo del Toro's latest project involves humans controlling enormous robots and beating up Godzilla style monsters emerging from the ocean. It's very satisfying that this didn't actually do that well in America, because this is just total formula. We don't need movies like this. We've seen it all before. This action garbage has silver linings here and there. Visually, it's interesting and has plenty of awesome imagery. It's got a strong colour palette. Del Toro's direction is merely acceptable, but there is a sense of wonder in the movie, and the CGI genuinely looks great. In terms of style and visuals, the movie is quite strong and not everything can be deep and meaningful. Many will enjoy this, especially if they see it on a big screen. Pacific Rim frequently feels like a loving tribute to its genre and for some it will be a dream come true. At least it's a bit lighter and less serious than some other blockbusters these days. For some this could be a good antidote to Man Of Steel.
I saw this on 4K screen so maybe I'm biased. The thing which lets PR down is that it's not just robots hitting monsters. There is an hour between the first and second big robot battles and the film has the cheek to try and emotionally engage us with these pathetic, one dimensional characters. Seriously? The film may look great, but it's so cartoony and flat (While pretending it isn't flat by shoving loads of meaningless backstory down our throats).

Surprisingly good, if you go with low or even negative expectation. Action scenes at night in the rain looks awesome with HDR in 4k resolution :).
Lately movies that claim to be monsters and action have proved a complete failure, and, to be honest I thought this was not going to be the exception.
Any change to see a real action movie with almost unstoppable battles monsters, and a dose of special effects so amazing you just leave you with your mouth open.
Of course, not everything is good, but entertaining plot is somewhat similar to that of other films: The hero gets a big pain that leaves the battle, then when the world needs the triumphant return finds the love of his life between the two due to the bad, the nearly died, and finally live happily ever after (like a soap opera).
We must clarify that thanks to special effects, battles, and good performances, the plot is not uncomfortable. I really think it's worth watching.

Generic characters, predictable plot, bad acting, and holy crap the exposition is handled pretty stupidly, they just throw information at your face, you can't even breathe, so annoyingly unnatural, plus the 2 hours was way too long for this movie, there was nothing interesting going on that couldn't be resolved in 30 minutes.
Anyway, worst Evangelion adaptation I've seen so far, insulting.

Oh, did I mentioned that GLaDOS had like 2 lines in the whole movie, something tells me that that was just so they can put her voice in the trailer and get the self-proclaimed "gamers" to watch, from someone that played portal, that was insulting as well.

One of the best 3D movies I've ever seen. It looked like a really silly movie but turned out to be a great Saturday afternoon action movie. Good stuff.
Giant monsters. Giant robots. Incredible fight scenes. What's not to like? The acting was even pretty decent (maybe I had low expectations given other comments). I loved some of the nonverbal queues, like when the Marshall shoulder gestures to Mako to stand at attention. Very good attention to details on all accounts. An incredibly good live action anime-style story.
The story / world building was very well done except the reference to the kaiju being dinosaurs. 65 million years of evolution/genetic engineering aside, this seems unlikely. But kudos for effort on the backstory.
For me, Pacific Rim was a huge disappointment: I mainly bought the BluRay because the flick was directed by Guillermo del Toro (I really liked his first Hellboy movie) and because it had good ratings across all review sites (e.g. currently 74% at Trakt). However, my excited anticipation vanished in no time: I THINK del Toro wanted the Kaiju to be seen as evil monsters that inspire fear and rage in the audience and therefore their slaughter by the Jaegers to be seen as just and noble. However, I never had mercy with mankind being attacked by the Kaiju and therefore never could identify with the glorified pilots of the Jaegers as the saviors of mankind. Additionally, after 15-30 minutes one knows exactly how the flick will end (the world is saved by a odd combination of two pilots in an old and decommissioned Jaeger based on a discovery by "Kaiju hippie" scientist). The sometimes laughable dialogs do not help either.
All in all this makes Pacific Rim an uninspired action flick I cannot recommend to anyone, even though the special effects are decent and their is a quite some action to be had. Why this movie is getting such good reviews I cannot understand: a German magazine wrote that Pacific Rim is an "exiting mixture of Transformers, Godzilla and Inception". And while the references are not altogether wrong, it lacks in many ways because Transformers and Inception are both out of league for Pacific Rim and the word "exiting" is just wrong when talking about this flick!
It's robots vs monsters so it's pretty cheesy but entertaining. Guillermo del Toro has the right amount of weird here. The world was the most interesting parts, the fights were decent. The monster designs were really neat.
So, a pretty normal world with giant monsters destroying cities from time to time. That alone made no sense whatsoever. Nobody was fleeing or mayhem anarchy or anything. That threw me off... also, living animals (Godzilla like, I give you that) that cannot be harmed by bombs and stuff? Sure... extra galaxies have a new set of atoms I assume? I am fine with superman flying thru force fields but that? No... effects and action scenes were top notch though. So it is fun to watch but I will never have the urge to see it again...
When the giant robots were fighting the giant monsters this movie was ridiculously enjoyable, but I had to go though about an hour of horrendously bad dialogue and plot performed by unlikable characters that added nothing to the action.
I'm hoping for a director's cut of this movie with all the superfluous stuff removed and tossed into a fire pit.

Seriously, the Jaegers are super cool :) I like their designs/engineering and size/mass. And the quote about them being able to fight a hurricane.
Scientifically they don't make a lot of sense (e.g., it would seem smarter to pilot them remotely and they don't seem like cost effective weapons at all) but they're simply cool to watch.
My favorite scene was the one where they dropped down inside the Jaeger's head to connect to the body. I just like such mechanical rail/elevator constructions and find it fascinating to watch (cool CGI combined with cool sound effects and animations).
When the intro talked about the aliens coming from below I immediately had to think of the Crysis game franchise. Until that portal/breach got mentioned right after that which makes it a bit different.
And of course there's the soundtrack! The main theme is just epic <3
And the main characters are pretty fun. Becket and Mori are lovely together, Geiszer and Gottlieb are entertaining, Pentecost is the boss, and Chau is just badass (I'm glad that he isn't dead :D).
The beginning was really good but I got quite a bit bored during all of the fighting in the second half (I'm not interested in the Kaiju and it doesn't show that much of the cool abilities of the Jaegers - or maybe I'm just bored because it lacks depth/meaning).
Pacific Rim is a completely batshit insane piece of pure awesomeness!!!
The CGI and special effects are great, The robots are great, and the monsters are extremely great. Granted..it hasn't got much depth, and the story is so and so, but the entertainment value is top notch.
The movie has an "anime" feel to it, but that might just be the big robots and the giant beasts. Anyway...If you have any interest in these kinds of things, do yourself a favour and watch Pacific Rim.

I didn't care for it that much.
There is a lot to like in this summer film, which essentially fuses elements from films like Transformers, Godzilla and Independence Day and vastly improves on those. Michael Bay and Roland Emmerich should take note! There is some risible dialogue unfortunately and some of the character development is obvious and simplistic, but importantly it endears the characters to the audience and Del Toro ensures that we still care for them amidst all the mayhem. A greater focus on an international setting rather than American certainly helps. The action sequences are also incredibly well staged, in particular a sequence in Hong Kong, and Del Toro's visual flair and pacing ensure the sequences never become repetitive or dull.
While the visual effects are great, the prolonged Jaeger vs. Kaiju fights started to lose me. In some respects it was reminiscent of Michael Bay's 2007 Transformers film.
The action scenes are the only reason why this movie is great. Everything else sucks.

The biggest steaming turd ever. How can you make a great actor like Idris Elba be so bad and cliché and as for Ron and Charlie I don't think I can watch Sons of Anarchy again....probably good for a five year old...on a positive note the 3d was good and that's why I gave it 4 hearts

The only thing I can really appreciate about this movie, is the soundtrack. The CG is okay, not over the top like everyone would like you to believe. The acting in this movie is absolutely horrible, the dialogs here and there just seem out of place and the story could've been made better. I am an anime fan so I appreciate the effort, but still... a B-movie production would have achieved exactly the same level for less bucks.

I cannot help but be disappointed. Not only do I hold del Toro in high regards but the hype for this was quite big (esp. seeing the similarities to my beloved NGE in the trailers). The story, characters and acting come second the the action & CG which even doesn't always look great unfortunately. I would have probably liked it more if I saw it in the cinema but the flaws are more apparent in the living room. My hopes for a kick-ass live-action mecha are now with Oshii's adaptation of Patlabor (and it better not end up like Assault Girls)!

From the trailer i thought it will be a nót very good movie with good effetcs. But it was my movie! Perfect! I just... I cant... it was like my favourite movies mixed in one. I really liked it.
And true, that that was the best 3D movie till now.
Not my first time to watch it but I didn't remember much about it AT ALL, so watching it again was very enjoyable. Pure science fiction, so if sci-fi isn't your cup of tea this probably won't interest you at all. Gigantic Transformer-like robots (controlled by humans, not cars that morph into robots) battle against just-as-gigantic alien life forms that are wanting to invade earth. Yes, the premise is very definitely way out there but this is still a fun movie to watch…especially if you can get into stuff like the Godzilla or King Kong movies, or even the Alien franchise (which is one of my favorites). You have to disengage your brain for a couple hours (this is 2 hours PLUS of runtime) and just enjoy the show. What I enjoyed about it along with all the action sequences was that it had an actual storyline that made sense. Probably the one thing that I disliked about this was how cheesy the ending was; it just seemed ridiculous at the tail-end of such a high-performance, extreme-action movie like this. It wasn't "bad", mind you; just very cheesy and "roll-your-eyes"-worthy. (The final "sneak peek" toward the end of the credits was good for a grin, however.) The acting was satisfactory but again, you're not watching something like Pacific Rim in search of Academy Award-winning cinema. (If you are, I weep for you.) This was just a fun, action-packed sci-fi movie that was good for a couple hours' entertainment. Definitely worth watching - for the right audience, that is - and even though this is not my first time to see it, I may even watch it again.
This is one of those absolutely craptacular writing movies that is just so much fun as to be worth watching. I enjoyed the hell out of it even though it was a shit show of writer failures.
However, giant fucking robots! This is enough to make crap writing entertaining. It's giant robots! Sure, this likely appeals to a smaller crowd, but it's giant robots!
The Marshal is such a great character. It is a love-to-hate character. He is an asshole. He is questionable as a leader. And the list goes on.
Idris Elba nails this character. Love that guy!

I don't think the pacing is bad, but I'm not convinced by the length of the movie, maybe it wasn't planned for another one.
The designs of the Jaeger and the Kaiju, I really liked them, even in chaotic scenes they didn't look bad at all, maybe criticizing special effects and others, would be just comments looking for perfection, the effects are good, and the rhythm of the movie was good, I liked it. I missed some cleaner shots of the Jaeger and the Kaiju to see more of their designs but they are good.

Bad acting, and the piss poor cg in the opening scene aside, this movie is really entertaining. I like the idea that the Jaeger is too much for one person to handle. It really feels like a problem we, as normal people, wouldn't imagine. But one of the reasons they use to explain to me why the second one is bad in comparison to the first one is that they supposedly filmed this one from a civilian perspective. From the ground, a helicopter, the 45th floor of a skyscraper. But rewatching it, that's not the case. Most of the shots are cinematic. Doesn't make this a bad movie, but it does invalidate the argument this movie is better than the second.
That said...
There are so many more reasons 'uprising' sucks compared to this.

The story is so cliched and familiar. If Transformers had been recorded after this movie, it might have been more watchable.
My friend kept referring to the Jaegars as "Slurpee Machines" (presumably because of the spinning core that resembles one), and kept making Slurpee-related one-liners during the already epic fights, which was fantastic.
Everything about this movie is charming, epic, or a combination of both. The worldbuilding is fun, the characters are interesting, and the action (as previously mentioned) is spectacular on a level rarely seen in the genre. Even though this movie doesn't seem to take itself too seriously at times, there's real heart at its core. It's kind of cheesy, it's predictable, it's extremely over-the-top, and I love it for that.
I had to give an 8 because I am a big fan of mechas. The people were annoying, but the effects were great.

As a German speaking Swiss I just couldn't take it seriously that these giant robots were called Jaegers. It sounded ridiculous :zipper_mouth:
I'm not sure is movie as bad as some people has make it as her is not really among the movies that I will consider good.
A point in his favor is that he lets me waiting more this piece the fact that the field is conclusive.
A lot of people told me this is a bad movie. After finally seeing it I can't understand why. Yeah the characters are flat and the plot is foreseeable but that's almost a given in these movies. So this is about the action and in that regard I fail to see while this was worst than others of this genre.
That was my comment from when I saw it about 4 1/2 years ago. It's not often I watch this kind of movie more than once. I think, althought just 5 years old (which is eternity in CGI), it aged really well. For what it wants to be it's a good movie. And it is a whole lot better than its sequel. Must say I enjoyed it even more than the first time so I'am pushing my initial rating from 7 to 8.
I think part of the background music is stolen from Attack on Titan.
I'm just catching up on the creative mind of Guillermo del Toro, preparing for the sequel. One of the things I enjoy about his works is the depth of his storytelling, his worlds and his characters have an authenticity that fills the narrative. As evocative as this is of GODZILLA or THE TERMINATORS, this is more than just a composite clone. The story is engaging. The cast is strong. The CGI is impressive. I give this a 7 (engaging) out of 10. [Adventurous SciFi]
Fun action movie. Drags at times. Action is enjoyable, monsters and robots look cool. A lot of the premise of the movie doesn't make a whole lot of sense, so just ignore that fact.
If you grew up like I did watching Japanese monster movies this movie rocked!
I swear to god the female jeager voice is similar to that of GLaDos from Portal 2!
Movie really is all about the Music & Looks. Story is not too deep but watchable without thinking about it too much. Great action movie with stunning Visuals & Music.
In my opinion, the perfect action movie. Uncomplicated, unpretentious, no unnecessary romance shoe-horned in there. The little annoying character angst there is is fairly quickly and neatly resolved so as to get on with why people came to see the movie, Kathy and giant mecha fighting.
The character are all likable, the protagonist is an especially stand up and chivalrous character, which is I think too uncommon these days. The effects were awesome for the time and because of lighting and atmosphere choice hold up just fine. I've now seen this film too many times to count and I enjoy it each time.
The score fits perfectly as well, the composer, Djawadi, did an amazing amazing job. It's a soundtrackI gladly listen to on drives.
Hugely fun robots versus monsters movie with some humor and personal drama thrown in for good effect. Could have done without the screaming caricature of a scientist though.
@toke oh wow I've just read this comment. "Evangelion adaptation"? What a joke. It's obvious that this movie does not attempt at all to adapt Evangelion, or even mecha movies. It tries to adapt the Japanese monster film genre. You think where did they get the name "kaiju"?
"Pacific Rim" is an amazing and explosive ride that is plenty of fun to watch, accompanied with dazzling visuals and a coherent plot.

This is an Ok film, I tried to skip it until a 12 hour flight and it was much better than what I was expecting.
Nice CGI but can't tell the same for plot. It was ok.
I liked it, but would've loved more background on the aliens! :D
On paper this sounded terrible, except for one thing - it came from the mind Guillermo Del Toro. This was the only reason I decided to watch it, and I was pleasantly surprised. As blockbuster monster movies go this one seriously delivers. The special effects are first rate, and it's really a lot of fun.
Performance wise, Idris Elba and Rinko Kikuchi and standouts. Del Toro favourite, Ron Perlman, has a small but fun role. The weaker links are Charlie Hunnam and Charlie Day, the latter serving as comic relief. Day merely does his usual "It's always sunny in Philadelphia" schtick which tonally doesn't sit that well with the rest of the film.
On the flip side the spectacle of huge monsters and robots battling each other while destroying the cities around them, is worth the admission price on its own. It's the ultimate Sunday night movie - unlikely to challenge you intellectually, but a perfect mindless end to the weekend!
seems like a mix of Power Rangers and Neon Genesis Evangelion
Shocking that I liked this so much! Classic deathmatch, but what style! Impressive. Besides, the second bottom surface of the hides. Great fun!

The beginning of the movie and the plot made me almost stop and pick another movie. But there's something in it that made me like the movie quite a lot.
Never stop surprising me.
Great Nerd-Trash. Fantastic Blockbuster-Soundtrack with good Special Effects. Yeah you got your plotholes here and your IndepenceDay-Patriotism there, but in the end it's a nice Actioner.
