As someone who has never had any interest or connection with Pokemon or pokemon charcters I can still say this is an enjoyable movie. I think this will be really fun movie for die hard pokemon fans but most of the intrigue came from Ryan Reynolds for me. All of the pokemon charcaters look good, and humor is a big part of this movie and they're are constant jokes made it dosen't really come off as trying to hard even tho they were trying hard. Ryan Reynolds carries this movie with his voicework because this movie dosen't really work without him, but still a fun movie that can be enjoyed.
yes, the description is definitely wrong, should have been something like "In a city were Pokemon and Human live together, a newly citizen and is recently met partner will need to works as partners to investigate a mysterious substance that may break the city balance". has there are no fight as we know them,, no trainers...
this movie is really wierd. I don't exactly know if I liked it or not.
On one side, you have the Pokemons, they are so well made, so well designed, their "acting" and behaviour couldn't have been done better. from this point of view, this movie is awesome. So many movies (hello Sonic) have failed in reproducing fictional character but this one is one spot. And wow, Mewtwo is incredible.
On the other side, the story, the jokes, the action etc, the movie itself, is so light, so unsurprising, already been seen 10 000 times in other movies, nothing is special.
The movie it's really made for the people that grew up playing Pokemon, and only those "niche" of people that was imagining a world with Pokemons.
So this movie is a must seen for Pokemon fan, cause the Pokemon are awesomly made, but if you don't really like Pokemons, never played the game and or generally don't care, than this movie is the most boring movie you will see and you will not understand most of the references.
Special kudos for the scene with Mr Mime, that one was really original and amusing.
Good world building, I would've preferred it the Pokemons looked more like animals and less like cartoons, but this Roger Rabit approach will do. Also, decent cinematography and score. But, the script’s complete ass (conveniences, unnecessary exposition, uninteresting characters without development, extremely predictable storyline etc.) aside from some of Pikachu’s snarky lines, so you’ll probably get bored at some part.
4.5/10
Omg I really loved this movie. It's not a typical Pokémon movie that's probably because of Ryan Reynolds he's so awesome in this one. It has some adult humor too and us just a great watch. The only bad thing is that it's a bit short haha.
It's great to see the franchise finally hitting theaters. The cinematography and score are great! And the plot twist is quite good! I hope that there will be more pokémon movies in the near future :)
Not sure why I even watched this movie. It was a really bad result of the producers to target towards kids and the original Pokemon fans which are now in their 30s (like me). The animation and effects of the Pokemon were very impressive but everything else was bad.
Ryan Reynolds' voice worked surprisingly well for Pikachu, but Kathryn Newton's acting was – I'm sorry to say – dreadful…
Story was very predictable and often illogical.
visuals were fun, story was okay. I don't know much of the pokemon culture/universe .. but the movie was still enjoyable
Ryan Reynolds & Justice Smith save what is otherwise not an impressive script. Bill Nighy is also quite good but isn't given that much to work with. Not the greatest movie, but's it's better than most video game movies.
Going into Pokémon Detective Pikachu, I had little to no knowledge of the franchise but was intrigued by the cute appearance of the titular character and Ryan Reynolds' voice acting. The story follows Tim, a young man investigating his father's disappearance, with the help of Detective Pikachu and a junior reporter. The plot includes adventure, a shady villain, and various colorful Pokemon. I found the movie to be enjoyable, but not particularly captivating as someone who is not familiar with the franchise. The world-building and presentation were impressive, but I was not engaged enough to want to pursue the games. The characters and performances were strong, with Ryan Reynolds doing a good job as Pikachu. The comedy was appropriate for the target audience, but the plot was thin. Overall, it was a decent movie, but it's mainly geared towards die-hard fans of the franchise.
Though I generally try not to make judgements based on nostalgia, this is undoubtedly a movie which would not have been so entertaining had I not been of the exact generation it was targeting.
The story is standard family action movie fare overall, though that may be underselling it slightly. The visuals of the titular creatures, and the inventive ways they’re incorporated into this alternate society, are quite a joy to see for anyone who has that same nostalgia for the early franchise. For most others, no doubt the movie is serviceable at best.
DEADPOOL PIKACHU DEADPOOL PIKACHU DEADPOOL PIKACHU
Was gonna give this a 9 but the ending sucked and I had to see Ryan Reynolds' ugly ass face, so no.
They really were like "Oh so you think you can avoid our bitch by watching the movie in a different language? Watch this".
"Pokemon! Gotta catch 'em all
It's you and me
Pokemon! Oh, you're my best friend
In a world we must defend"
Pokémon Detective Pikachu was much better than I thought it was going to be. You have Ryan Reynolds fantastically bringing Pikachu alive, every pokemon looking fantastic, they have created a fantastic world, the story although by the numbers is decent enough, Mr. Mime stealing the damn show, Pokemon battles, plot twists and a rewarding ending.
The best part is Pikachu, it is still the franchise Pokemon and Ryan Reynolds is bringing Pikachu alive wonderfully. The lines, the way Pikachu is animated, SINGING THE THEME SONG, volt tackle and just his whole character. It is the best part of the movie.
If you grew up with the games and want some light fun, this is the perfect film. It's enjoyable and brings back those nostalgic feelings. I want to play Pokemon Yellow again! I never expected to see such a good Pokemon film that is not animated. Hell! I never thought it was ever going to be made into a live-action film! I'm glad it is getting a sequel, I wonder what they'll do next. I hope they put as much heart and detail into the next one. I do know that I'll be watching it!
Ps. I lied, Mr. Mime's scene is the best damn part of the film!
I WANNA BE THE VERY BEST!
Well, what a movie! I didn't think it would be that good!
First of all, Pokémon. Lots of Pokémon with stunning visuals. And talking about visuals, everything in the movie was beautiful. Lots of vivid colors throughout the movie.
About the cast, my boy Ryan, he was awesome. Honestly I thought that (mostly because of his recent role as Deadpool) he would exaggerate as Pikachu, but no! He was a funny and loyal character. On the other hand, I didn't like Kathryn Newton's Lucy much. It seemed a corny/cheesy character.
I saw a lot of people saying the story was kinda cliché, but I didn't think so. Kept me clinging to the screen during 90% of the movie!
I would definitely watch the movie again! And I think I will re-install Pokémon Go eheh
Good part - it was pretty. CG looked natural. And few scenes were amazing (the holograms and ofc the Torterra, you know...). Pokemons were well made and animated (/stares at Sonic).
Bad part - is everything else. Plot - cliche on cliche. Nothing you won't expect (except Ditto, that was probably the only good part). And holes, like good piece of Maasdam (right after Tim awkwardly fell through the hole in the roof, he is jumping from one tree to another above the kilometer abyss, they probably cut the Naruto style training part there). Drama - no one really cared (just compare it to Wonder Park). The play - it's not like mannequins could play better, but remove MC and this movie probably won't lose much (well, you need to tune the plot a little, like example there was only the Lucy, and she met Pikachu when broke into apartments).
it was good but boring sometimes, not what i was expecting! i expected some funny scenes, adventures, exploring the pokemon world more! but good overall.
Loved this film so hilarious and really revitalises the magic of what it is like to be a kid again.
I growed up with pokemon and glad to be still a fan. This movie brought back a lot of memories and It was a lot of fun and had a great sense of humour. I'm glad the CGI wasn't over done and the detail on the pokemon were just right. I loved (ryan reynolds) as pikachu. The plot wasn't the best thought and could of been better but did love the surprising ending that I also felt was a little rushed and would of loved more to it.
Definitely aimed for kids, but great work on the graphics and thanks for the nostalgia
Worldbuilding, Pokemons and Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu get big thumbs up. Aside from that, it was just okay movie, certainly didn't meet my expectations. Storyline was predictable, plot twist wasn't that twisty either. Even though it had great moments, I would pass on watching it again.
please Mewtwo delete this movie from my memory and from existence .
Damn this film is good! Now unfortunately my interest in pokemon took a dive shortly before gen 4 so my pokemon knowledge isn't up to date but deep down its always been close to my heart. This is something that 10 year old me would've loved to see!
Some people are saying that the film has a slow start, buuuut I can accept it, it's not too slow and it has a pretty intricate story to explain to you indirectly. Ryan Reynolds steals the show, this without a doubt wouldn't be as enjoyable without him voicing Pikachu!
Overall, I highly recommend this film to pokemon fans and people who haven't quite gotten into the series, it's full of lovable moments regardless of your past experience with the franchise!
Hell I wanna watch it again right now!

As much as Pokemon: The First Movie was bad, it held a special spot in many fans hearts and went (at the time) to where no Pokemon episode had gone before. Emotional and story wise. Pokemon: Detective Pikachu in many ways feels like that first movie. It has a clear plot, with messy storytelling. Rehashed tropes used from old Pokemon episodes. Basic lessons sprinkled on, yet, it isn't hollow.
The world feels believable. Filled with architecture, business, people and of course Pokemon, who all feel like they belong. I had no doubt this world could be a thing within this universe. But, nothing is perfect about it obviously. Flaws stem from the design of the world surprisingly, and not the Pokemon themselves. Neon-Noir Crime films have a distinct style used to amplify the emotion and suspense for a thrilling mystery. Here, it's used rather poorly. Acting more like a modern kid-friendly buddy-cop movie than an attempt to make something that stands out, as this movie should.
The similarities to Who Framed Roger Rabbit? are mainly only there in the concept. Cartoon-like characters in a gritty crime movie. Here you get some of that but there is hardly any detective work happening. Stuff just occurs, giving our cast the next path to follow. It is all based on coincidence and doesn't have me really seeing this group as good investigators. It's quite the opposite. The only person who I thought was doing anything within their own merit was Kathryn Newton's character, Lucy. But I can say that there is one aspect of this movie that relates to Roger Rabbit closely, and that's the creepy imagery in a kids film. It's way more subtle here, lacking the dark noir blacks and overexaggerated expressions you're able to do in cartoons. But it's still a bit unsettling.
Justice Smith's character Tim is just bad. His main arc is okay, but he seemed to jump from point A to point C straight away. Lacking any build up to a defining moment. His relationship with Lucy is rushed as well. The only thing that isn't streamlined is the Pikachu relationship. Other than that, I found Tim's motivations off and his overall character boring.
Pikachu is the star of the movie and with Ryan Reynolds behind the voice, it holds the whole picture together. He is as charismatic as he is flawed. He is really the only one I cared about, yet even he had problems. The whole reason why he can talk to Tim leads back to the old Pokemon tropes of being far fetched.
The third act is awful and was so predictable in a number of ways. Didn't help that the amount of exposition that it gave was handed to the characters as easily as the clues were. If the rest of the film was a step forward from the old animated Pokemon movies, this act is stepping back into the realm of plot devices and cliche final battles. It wasn't good, yet I wasn't bored either. Unlike the Pokemon movies of old, this understands the balance of character importance and fan service (to an extent). The reason the third act pulls itself apart is that it leans on the fan service side way too much. But, since the rest of the movie had let me follow these people around, and experience them alone and contained. I felt better rooting for them by the time it all wrapped up.
For a first film into something new, it's okay. For fans, I think they'll enjoy it. Kids will too. But there is no denying that whatever comes next is probably going to be better than the first generation.
5/10
What a dumb plot. Love the worldbuilding and the animation though.
Keep it up guys. This is the first Pokémon movie I've seen that wasn't terrible. I don't regret watching it at all. That's high praise for a Pokémon movie. This live action + CG render combination is the way to go.
With a few hiccups here and there visually quite amazing CGI.
Very enjoyable movie. Would love to see more on this quality level.
But the storytelling and characters need a lot of work.
That's the weak point of this movie.
Ditto seems overpowered in this, though.
There are areas where this movie shines, and others where it falls apart.
The Pokémon themselves, perfect. The models, the textures, the way they move. They look and behave in a believable way. If this movie was purely to show off how to correctly model Pokémon, then I'd say they nailed it.
The world itself seemed well done, but very little was fleshed out - you're given a general overview, which makes sense as the majority of the world of Pokémon isn't relevant to the core story. It's a "good enough" summary that someone who doesn't know of Pokémon will understand enough to watch this movie, but not enough to be pulled in to another one.
In terms of the story, it has its high notes. Pikachu not knowing what to do after the Pokémon battle stood out to me, as did his walk-off when things went sideways and he no longer believed in himself. It also feels like Tim's affection for Lucy was either a late addition or added "just because". It never led to anything, and after the big battle, Lucy is told that she'll be on TV and that's where they end the story for her. The epilogue made no mention of her. It's like the writers forgot she existed because her core arch was finished.
Overall I enjoyed the movie, and I'd watch it again: mainly to see what other Pokémon were hiding in the background shots.
Bonus: the credits were pretty cool, and I'd love to see the soundtrack released.
It's not a great movie but seeing Pokémon on the big screen makes me happy. They look great for the most part. Ryan Reynolds is fantastic as Pikachu and I want the see the R rated outtakes really bad. Everything besides the Pokémon is rather dull. If you're a fan of Pokémon you should have a good time if not, you can skip.
Some might not find it to totally like Pokémon without Ash. But this is definitely a Pokémon movie and way better than most of their animated movies. The CGI nailed the looks of all the Pokémon creatures and their voices.
The movie is charming, funny and fun as well. They did a great job introducing this world to the big screen. I definitely want more.
Spoiler: Even if the twist doesn’t totally work. One thing though. I do want more, just not more of Ryan Reynolds talking for Pikachu. He managed to make Pikachu more annoying than cute.
The movie was just absolutely great! The way the CGI of the movie was put on screen was just absolutely insane. It's very loyal to the original games and show. TBH, I thought the plot was actually amazing even though others thought otherwise. It was "very twisty". The plot was really good and to those that thought it wasn't, also note that the movie was based on the game and they tried to make the movie loyal to the game. This was my childhood, so seeing it on screen portrayed correctly was :ok_hand_tone1:.
Detective Pikachu is a really fun time. There’s a good sense of humour, fun action, and a decent mystery. However, there are a few too many twists that do make the narrative feel a tad over complicated. Also, while the leads are likeable enough there are a couple moments where they are a bit grating. Nevertheless, long time Pokémon fans should get plenty out of this film but there’s enough of a good story for anyone unfamiliar with the property.
Overall I enjoyed the movie. The story wasn't surprising, but the lighting and graphics were quite good.
It was okay. Not groundbreaking and the plot is very bland. I didn't really find most of the jokes that funny, but the visuals and world-building were good. The movie was most enjoyable during the parts setting up the world-building and not the main plot, which is predictable, dry, and un-interesting.
pikachu has a little hat, and little feet, with little little toes, and little LITTLE fingers
ryan reynold’s pikachu was one of the only things that kept me watching this movie. the pokémon’s appearance was kind of startling at first and the plot seemed like one large filler.
Being a pokemon fan, I went into this film with high hopes. Saw it in theaters and one friend fell asleep for almost the entire movie... I'm actually jealous because this was difficult to sit through. Giving Pikachu Ryan Reynolds' voice would only work if the jokes were funny. To me, all of the humor felt forced. The execution of the plot was boring. Would never bother watching this again.
This is a fun and enjoyable movie for the whole family. While not every moment works, I found many of the things surprising in how well they worked in a live-action setting.
Wait a minute, why did no-one tell me this film had Bill Nighy talking about Pokemon? I would have watched it sooner!
Amazingly good CGI
At first I thought that the movie was more for children, but I liked it very much. Even as a non-Pokémon fan, I think that the film was good and understandable due to the beautifully thought-out and emotional story. The excellent CGI made everything even more interesting.
It's really hard to like a movie when it revolves around some guy that is epicly stupid and pathetic. And the intern is 100% annoying. The first 30 seconds of seeing her had me wishing bad things upon her.
This really was a let down.
The best thing for me was the CGI effects and how they brought the pokemons to life. Especially Pikachu was really cute and funny. People who are familiar with pokemons and their characteristics will benefit from this and find heartwarming and sweet anecdotes throughout the movie.
As for the story, it entertained me. Not more but also not less. The only thing I sorta dislike is the end. I was a bit disappointed by how they wrote it but anything else is well done and deserves a watch.
This movie is just a Zootpopi remake, change my mind.
6/10
H H H H H
Shockingly (pun entirely intended) decent. Give it a watch if you're a fan of Pokémon.
I was expecting the worst, but I have to say this movie was actually more than decent. It feels like the people behind it are just the same as we are: kids who used to love Pokémon in the '90s and that are paying their tribute to the franchise. The structure and overall tone remind me of those kids-adventure movies we used to watch in elementary and junior high. I am pretty sure that I would have loved this just if I were twelve.
Its biggest flaw is the lackluster humor. I guess Pikachu was meant to offer witty dialogues and not so politically correct jokes all around, but rarely manages to do so. I guess they held it back to "protect" the kids and avoid issues?
However, glad to finally see a decent video game movie in a while!! Better than most of the Pokémon official animated movies anyway.
I would summarize this as: Deadpool, but like a yellow furry Deadpool.
Ryan Reynolds is his usual snarky self, but this time as a Pikachu. Action ensues. The plot is the same as the video game and that means it is predicable, but the Ryan Reynolds snark lines are delightful as ever. Also, if you happen to be watching this on DVD (what? just me whose library has this on DVD?), check out the bonus features which are as good if not better than the movie itself.
It was a good movie, meaningless but very good, a very tragic story, the end didn't make sense at all, how Harry entered Pichaciu's body.
Excellent film. I had a cracking time watching 'Pokémon Detective Pikachu'.
As a kid I had a very loose interest in Pokémon, I didn't know anything about it other than a few of the main characters. Therefore, in regards to the realm of it all, I don't know much. With that noted, I was thoroughly entertained throughout this.
Ryan Reynolds is great as the voice of Pikachu, he had me amused from start to finish. Ken Watanabe and Bill Nighy are also involved, they both honour their respective roles with strong performances. Justice Smith and Kathryn Newton, both of whom I was unaware of, are decent as Tim and Lucy.
The special effects are nice, while the plot is good if not amazing. I like the way the world is built, too. It's the humour and Reynolds' Pikachu which carry this production, that's for certain. I'm very much up for a sequel.
It's a highly rewatchable movie, because of the humor it had thanks to Ryan Reynolds portrayal of Pikachu. I loved all the Pokemons that they've shown, and mostly the film is dominated by the first generation ones.
without ryan reynolds, this would have been a flop. I kinda wish this showed when I was a kid..I would totally flip! But now in my 20s.. It's okay.
I expected nothing when I first saw this movie and was very surprised. They didn't have to go that hard but good on them.
In this era of #Mewtoo, it's good to see Pokemon getting equal billing in a movie. This wasn't for me, however, as while it's not a badly made film, I still failed to see the point of these pocket monstrosities. I am, of course, too old to understand.
So entertaining from beginning to end!
Highly recommend family flick
6 - Fair
I can't really find how someone came up with it, but it happened. Story wise, it's weird. Pokemon look weird. But I still love Ryan Reynolds so yeah...
I think the movie was awesome specially as a Pokemon franchise fan, it may had a few flaws but I don't mind those.
I just wished there was more to the Lucy and Tim's relationship development shown. :)
Pros:
- Visuals (cinematography, art direction, end credits sequence, Pokémon appearance)
- Music (original score and callbacks)
- Ryan Reynolds' voice acting
- Seeing Pokémon in live action form is actually awesome
- One plot twist was pretty cool and wasn't obvious to me, but I usually miss this kind of twist
- A couple of moments that made me laugh
Cons:
- Mediocre acting
- Glimpses of a complex story marred by cheap moments
- Treats the viewer like they couldn't figure out plot elements without flashbacks or spoken lines. For a "detective" movie, this is ironic.
- Pokémon are scattered throughout this movie's world, but I felt like only Pikachu had true personality - all of the other Pokémon felt like extras. This is the most disappointing part!
Growing up Pokemon was the game of choice for most but it quickly wore off its welcome. While I may not grasp the concept of the game, I do understand films a lot better. Graphics are pretty good and the story is surprisingly really good... it's the lack of interest on my part hence its low score.
Ryan Reynolds, man. I want him to voice every animated character ever! He's amazing as a voice actor, it makes the character feel like an actual live being.
Also, I loved the reasoning behind why Tim could understand Pikachu, when humans and Pokemon can't really communicate through speech.
This is a fun and mostly entertaining movie. A nice setup, two likable leads and some cute, wholesome dialogue compensate for some dodgy effects and too much exposition in an overall weak story.
It was great unpredictability movie for me.
Only expect to like this if you like (or even REALLY LIKE) Pokemon. I saw this for Ryan Reynolds and the entire thing underdelivered and fell flat. Please, not sequel.
I wanted to rent a movie and my college age son picked this movie. let's just say I'm really surprised at the lower ratings. this was just an adorable movie and an actuality engaging storyline. the kid was really likeable and I liked the plot twist. it was well acted, and honestly with "animated" whether drawn or puppet animation, some actors just aren't convincing that they're actually talking with anyone. this whole team did a good job.
apparently some of the geekier didn't like Ryan Reynolds. say what you want but he is actually really good at voice inflection which really helps with a character that the actor is just the voice. plus, you can tell he likes these types of movies and really gets into them as an actor. for parents added bonus, with him, you know there will be "adult" jokes and puns.
Pokémons are way better in their original animations. It's like Lion King. This new 3D s**t is terrible.
Having never played the "Detective Pikachu" game, I can't attest as to the film's faithfulness to the source material. As a movie on its own merits and with a passing knowledge of Pokemon, I found that I enjoyed this more than I thought I would going in. It has a decent narrative structure (although the villain reveal is a little out-of-left-field; they probably could have used a little more buildup) and likable if somewhat cookie -cutter characters. But, WOW, is the tone inconsistent! Most of the movie gets surprisingly serious and dark early on, and for parts of the film Ryan Reynolds feels more like comic relief. Expect emotional whiplash from this one. Still, it's a fair movie that at least fans of Pokemon will likely enjoy.
It was cool seeing everything live action. Ryan Reynolds is always a delight. The main plot wasn't anything particularly special and I didn't care for the ending. The Pokemon are the real attraction here. Seeing all the ones from when I was a kid was great. Pikachu swearing was even better. Everything else, including the humor outside Reynolds, is just okay.
The world building was great, and pikachu and his comments are pretty much what makes this movie work. But there was also a lot that doesn't make sense. There's a lot of running around that is only enjoyable because of pikachu's ongoing commentary. And then we reach the big final and I found myself thinking "what??". It just makes no sense. Why would anyone want to turn all of humanity into Pokémon? It just makes absolutely no sense. I could see wanting to become Mewtwo with all his powers. I could see him exploiting Pokémon, stealing their powers to heal himself, almost anything else would make more sense. I mean, who wants to become a psyduck? The thing lost me once that became the final goal. And then by the time we get to the surprise ending, we get an explanation for why Pikachu can talk, but I almost found myself disappointed. Snarky pikachu was what made this whole movie great and then we lose him. And snarky dad just isn't the same. There's a reason they made him talking, it would be boring to watch a live action movie if all pikachu said was pika pika. And now we're back to square one because there's really nowhere to go from here if they want to continue building. And so I found myself torn between liking the fkrst half and not liking the ending.
Could've been better. It is just a Pikachu with a cliche Hollywood movie plot.
I didn't expect I will enjoy this, but this was cute and fun! Really enjoyable! Really liked the graphic of Pokemons.
Filme me surpreendeu com a qualidade visual e o enredo imprevisível! Espero que tenha continuação.
Detective Pikachu is a fun film.
I can't really say much else about it other than that. It doesn't really try to be anything more than a fun film, and all the references to Pokemon as a medium in general don't feel forced or contrived, which is something I definitely expected going into it. Ryan Reynolds delivers a good performance as the titular Pikachu, and Justice Smith certainly does a fine job here as well. The film is an absolute joy to look at too, and there are even some good emotional beats as well, specifically between Pikachu and Tim. However, the villain's plan is a bit... contrived, to say the least, and all in all the twist ending was kinda dumb. If the third act wasn't such a wild, fun ride, this would probably be an 8/10.
But, as it stands, this remains at a 9/10 for me.
such a creative, light and fun movie to watch with your family... doesn't let u bored, I really did enjoy it.
Twas a great movie u see. Seeing Chris Geere again was also awesome, but he should be given bigger roles...
great movie...
hope it has another sequel
Having movies with real life Pokemon is a great idea. They should do more. The FX are there, they look amazing. That's obviously the strongest point of the movie. Too bad the rest does not have the same quality. If you try to make it more serious than just a kid movie, do it all the way and not just on apparence.
The plot itself is pretty frail. The bad guy's plan makes no sense and has no motivation (unless he's just stupid and insane ?), is executed in two minutes and undone in five. The character development is a joke, the protagonist just changes from "I hate my dad and pokemons" to "I'll give my life for them" overnight. Most twist plots are out of nowhere, they don't fit and can only make sense by the need to have twist plots. The detective work is not much better, they just stumble upon everything they need. The most rificulous part being the totally abandonned and unmanned laboratory where the accident occured just a few days ago. It's still fully functionnal, with all the evidences, nothing and nobody guarding it and they can leisurely go everywhere they want for hours.
Too bad they couldn't do it seriously until the end. It just looks like a real movie with a scenario for 6 year olds. Reynold's performance is worth it though.
"As the start of a potential franchise is flawed but promising".
Imagine this being your first introduction to pokemon.
The CG was decent at parts and other times actually so awful I wondered if I was watching a movie or a high school project. The absolute worst part was when they were putting Mew into the truck at the facility he broke out of. Another awful one is when the giant Torterra are spawning. They look like rag dolls. I was embarrassed.
The acting was not good and the female character was completely disposable with zero chemistry between either of them. One scene in particular, the main character is meant to be sitting beside pikachu reminiscing about his poor relationship with his dad, gradually becoming teary but his delivery is so deadpan it's like a robot pretending to be human. He acts in a similar manner when sitting on his bed his dad set up in their apartment and wipes tears that aren't even there.
Kids films shouldn't get a pass to be awful when you know this is targeted at those looking for a nostalgia trip. The music was completely forgettable and some tracks were so overused they could be in any film. Additionally the story was so loosely formed and it treats us like idiots in the resolution where Mewtwo shows a flashback of putting main character's dad into pikachu's body instead of just separating them. The character came to the same conclusion already. they should have used the budget on the scene to improve the CG.
Pokémon Detective Pikachu - Detective Deadpool
So Detective Pikachu I was to much hyped for movie, my bad.
First act is slow, world building but still interesting Detective Pikachu. Middle you could see that everything going odd places with story, characters become dumber and just sitting there and trying to think why they doing this or that. And this act is like weakest point of the movie all characters and motivations is like you trying to understand what's going but it’s just gibberish.
What was good, mainly all Pokemons are really good and feel real, world building is really good and feels alive and existing. Some of jokes at first act was good latter it get emotional and repetitive.
In conclusion, movie is good but if you trying to get some deep story it’s not for you. If you exited just see pokemons in real life cgi power it’s treat. And we all should go to cinema and watch it, that we would get more pokemon movies but now with better writing. This could be a great movie with good script.
5/10 + Ryan Reynolds as Detective Pikachu = 6/10
I don't know what to think or how to feel. Guess it can't be that bad then.
While not as electrifying as I might've hoped, Detective Pikachu definitely had a spark so I'll round up and give it a recommend. The story was even more predictable than the Gameboy game but the scenes with the Pokémon were fun, even for an outsider such as myself.
Absolutely batshit insane. It's entirely exposition, great pokemon models (they need to do a nature "documentary" with these wow), and the most off the wall final 20 minutes I've ever seen. A decent movie if you're a longtime fan of the video games, and I would argue the patchy plot is faithful to the game writing.
Some movies should never be made.
Tim Goodman (Justice Smith) gets a call from the Ryme City Police Department about his father. After a car accident, Tim’s father Harry and his Pokémon partner are presumed dead. The circumstances of the accident are put into question however, when Howard’s partner Detective Pikachu shows up. With Pikachu’s memory gone, he and Tim try to find out what happened to Harry.
Storywise, POKÉMON Detective Pikachu does not stand out. The plot feels very generic and in places, rushed. During the first act, we see a completely indifferent Tim. His father’s death does not seem to affect him very much. On top of that, some characters seem forced into plot. On the way to his father’s apartment, Tim runs into Lucy (Kathryn Newton), an intern at a large news network. She seems to come and go as the plot requires. Newton’s flat performance does the character no good either.
During the second act of the movie, the pace picks up a little. Tim and Pikachu start to connect and do detective work together. The flow of the movie is interrupted by a few weird moments that seem shoehorned into the story. This culminated in a third act that has a few plot twists.
Despite its flaws, the movie is carried by Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal of Pikachu. He brings the humor we have seen from him before, like in Deadpool. Justice Smith has a few good moments as well. The few Pokémon battles that we got were good and fun to watch. It’s a fun one-time watch for Pokémon fans, but don’t go out of your way to see the movie.

The animation was brilliant - sadly let down by the acting and the script. It felt very forced, and really ruined the movie for me. Nice to see Pokemon in the films however.
There were some good bits - some funny adult humor, but other than that, quite a let down.
