Police Story 1985

Wow! Just wow. The way Chan is able to balance martial arts, with crazy stunts and slapstick humor is insanely impressive and always proves why he is regarded as such a master. This movie is pure entertainment. Probably the best in his filmography. It's easy to forget (because we've become so immune, due to years of over-the-top cartoon action with CGI, safety nets, and padded sets) that there was a time where we were thrilled, and even cringed at some of these types of bone crunching stunts that these people would put themselves through for our entertainment. Bravo Jackie Chan.

The new Criterion blu ray of this and number 2 is a MUST HAVE. The restoration looks absolutely amazing and is loads better looking than what is streaming on iTunes. Also I would kill for a Jackie Chan stunt team shirt!

What a fun flick. That courtroom scene was really well-written, too. I love classic Jackie Chan.

Police Story is as fun as the last time I watched it!!!

It still holds up as a solid action movie. Insane action stunts (Jackie Chan style) and stupid comedy (also Jackie Chan style) makes for a very good hour and forty minutes,

Jackie Chan was a big part of my childhood, and some of these movies are actually just as watchable now as they were then.

Just get it and get ready for one of the most insane openings to a movie ever.

"I just realized how tough this case is, can you replace me?"

Jackie Chan's commitment in making this is truly remarquable, you can feel it throughout the movie. The stunts are everything here, some of the best i've ever seen. Remarquable action choreography. The slapstick humor is actually funny and Jackie Chan is a natural at it (favorite being the scene where he answers the phones). Anytime there's no action on-screen or humor, the movie becomes boring though, it's really not a story I found interesting. The middle part was a bit tough to get through. Respectable direction from Jackie Chan.

1- How much glass did they break?
2- I wish I could parallel park like that
3- I can still hear the punch/kick noises
4- Where's Jackie Chan's stunt Oscar?

You know the action is good when every punch, kick, and glass break gets an audio reaction out of you.

This movie slaps during the action sequences, those scenes are very impressive and filled with great stuntwork. The rest of the movie is pretty boilerplate, the story and characters are about as stock and predictable as it gets. Now, fortunately most scenes are quite funny, so it still manages to entertain, even if I don’t think it does slapstick as well as The Naked Gun. The directing and acting are pretty bad and stiff. They use some very odd lenses for the simplest of shots, and I don’t know what’s going on with some of the sound editing here. Also, I absolutely hate the use of music, way too much handholding for the audience. It’s kind of a fastfood version of an 80s action movie, a proto Fast and Furious, if you will. If you’re looking for something that scratches that itch, this does so pretty decently.

5.5/10

I knew Jackie did his own stunts but I had no idea he also wrote and directed. What an absolute legend. The movie is hilarious too.

Too silly. Too stupid. Not funny enough. Not martial artsy enough. Strange mixture of kung fun, British spy movie, slapstick, super hero movies and mystery. Don't like it. I guess, Chan fans get everything they asked for and will be entertained. I think it's trash.

Pure adrenaline rush filled to the brim with terrific and authentic only a Jackie Chan movie could pull off. Comedic relief between the action pieces is funny enough with great support from Brigette Lin. Everything else fades against the unadulterated physical charisma that Chan and team delivers with an action choreography that never ceases to blow you away.

I just can't get enough. Every time I watch Police Story time flies. It has your Jackie humor, Jackie stuns and your Jackie fights. Like we have an amazing chase scene in the beginning, Jackie Chan dancing like Michael Jackson, the fight scene at the villa, Jackie Chan trying to convince a witness that she needs his protection, we get Bill Tung, Maggie Cheung as May, Jackie's girlfriend, the scene where Jackie Chan grabs her scooter is just so damn funny, we get a courtroom scene and we get one of the most epic Jackie Chan set pieces at the mall. Seeing Jackie Chan sliding down that pole with all the lights is still a sight to behold.

Yes, Police Story will never get old for me. And it still isn't my favorite Jackie Chan movie but it is up there. Well worth a watch for anyone!
