If they really had to remake Psycho; then they should have just adapted the book more closely. With Norman older and Marion's head cut off in the shower.
Otherwise a shot by shot remake is just a waste of our time and Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting) only testing his abilities as a filmmaker. Just because Sant was nominated the previous year; I guess he thought that meant he was as good as Hitchcock.
The casting is just awful. Vince Vaughn looks lost on what to do with the part of Norman. Anne Heche looks just as lost on what to do with Marion. The rest of the cast does better but are mostly mis-cast as well. Just stick with the original.
I am sure it was fun to make at least.

It's an interesting experiment in film, but ends up being totally pointless. It's not offensive to the legacy of the original, but it adds nothing to it. An ill advised test.

Pointless remake, Vince Vaughn was a terrible choice to play Norman and he doesn't come close to Perkins' performance. The iconic shower scene felt very mediocre.

I was surprised by the big names in this, and they all do quite a good job (except Vaughn obviously and Anna Heche was also not very convincing).

I did like that it was set in 1998 and overall it was watchable but I don't see why anyone would watch this over the original.

Laughable. If you're going to do a remake at least try to spice it up a bit, all we got was an extra jerking off scene and the house looks cheaper. Apart from that, this is a shot for shot copy with just everything less interesting. The shower scene was so boring. Anytime the score comes on it's just an insult to the original. Vince Vaughn and Julianne Moore are the only assets this movie has but it's not enough to justify the existence of this remake. Even judging it as a shot for shot remake, this is one of the worst i've seen. Time wasted when I could have rewatched the original instead.

Usually you expect a remake to be made in order to give a new or different view on the story, update it or just do it better. None of that applies here.
It was the exact same script (the original is ok), the exact same music (the original score by Bernard Hermann is masterfull), the exact same scenes, angles and decor, shot-by-shot. Just different actors and now in color. The only changes were a few touches of vulgarity.
Maybe this is meant as an homage, but comes of as rather pointless. Changing actors for another performance of a play works, but seems strange here.
No point to watch this. Watch the original instead.

Perhaps the most literal remake ever made, director Gus Van Sant delivers a shot-by-shot remake of Psycho. It’s not an exact copy, but it’s fairly close. Vince Vaughn, Anne Heche, Julianne Moore, and Viggo Mortensen form a solid cast, but their performances are a little odd and unnatural. Something about the filmmaking style clashes with the modern setting, and the film seems somewhat self-aware of what it’s doing. Still, the storytelling works and creates a compelling mystery with interesting characters. While Gus Van Sant’s remake doesn’t recapture the brilliance of the original Psycho, the power and allure of the material still comes through.
