Rango 2011

"The future, Mr. Rango! The future!" Love all of the references in this film from the Chinatown references to A Fistful of Dollars/The good the bad and the ugly. One of my favourites has to be the scene where Rango lands on the windshield of The Great Red Shark convertible from one of my all time favourite films Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas!

This is a decent movie. There were a few times when this movie remembered me of some of the spagetti westerns that came out in the mid-1960s.

The Spirit of the West is off course without a doubt Clint Eastwood. Too bad he didn't also do the voice, that would have been nice.

why would he that makes no sense

Didn't get it. Weird story. Turned it off half way thru.

Rango is for Kids. Some animated movies are entertaining for all ages but this one is not one of those. I'm sure kids would get a kick out of this one but if your over the age of 12 don't bother.

Great animation but the dialogue was a bit too quirky.

One of the poorest 3D animation movies I've seen yet.

I bet Daniel Bryan likes the 1:05 mark

Wonderful animation and rendering. It had it's good moments, but overall, the film was just weird. There were several oddities of the writing, and in some parts the talking was a little too fast to understand. Also, with some characters, it was puzzling as to what species they were even supposed to be. The acting was very good, but the script could have been a bit different.

Pretty decent film, oh what the heck... I loved it!

Graphics are amazing... nice details...
Good humour, had to laugh couple of times, hard! =)
Johnny Depp did well as a lizard =D

I'd give 8/10

It still holds up after all these years. It's still pretty funny, even if the story is pretty basic, and the action scenes are so much fun! The animation is still very impressive; it manages to narrowly escape the uncanny valley by taking a more stylized approach to realism.

Surprisingly weird and quirky, it’s not quite the thing you expect from a mainstream animated film.
You can tell it’s not a Dreamworks or Illumination film, but it also doesn’t quite fit with the Pixar formula. It’s certainly way too layered to be just a simple kids film, in fact I don’t think there’s much for kids to latch on to here. Some of the concepts it tackles include environmentalism, identity, mythology and religion, and it doesn’t hold back with its messaging, genuine artistic risks are being taken. There are also a ton of references and jokes that will fly over the heads of most kids, which certainly made the film more enjoyable for me. I like its animation style (good colour, interesting use of light, I really like the harsh, ugly textures that are used on some of the animals) and it’s aged pretty well. The music’s also great and the voice acting is solid. It even took me a while to recognize who’s voicing the main character. As for negatives, I think some of the humour is poorly executed, and it didn’t need to be this long.

7/10

NOTE FOR MYSELF SO I REMEMBER SOMEDAY, ONLY REPRESENTS MY OPINION/THOUGHTS FOR MYSELF NOT A “REAL REVIEW“, SO YOU MIGHT NOT AGREE WITH IT
(also its not my 1st language)

6.5
somehow both bad and good
dialogue can get a little bit stupid and cringey sometimes and not everything works out but the story idea is good overall
has some very awesome cinematic shots which is kinda surprising in a movie like that, they did pretty good with the western vibes
Beans look creeped me out a little bit, reminded me of that star wars guy (sorry to the fans, never really watched it)
on the other hand, a snake has no business looking that hot x'D
watchable but not a must

Johnny Depp's voice acting was on point, and that "ascending" scene, where he crosses the busy highway street sorta reminded me of that all-white area he was in as Jack Sparrow in one of his movies

From director Gore Verbinski comes the incredibly imaginative and well-crafted animated western Rango. The story follows a lizard named Rango who, after falling out of the back of a car, comes upon a small desert town where he’s made sheriff after telling a tall tale of his exploits. Featuring Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Bill Nighy, and Ray Winstone, the voice cast is especially good. And, the animation is incredibly detailed and realistic; with some amazing character designs. Additionally, the humor is quite funny and includes a lot of satire of the western genre. The score by Hans Zimmer is also impressive, and sets the right tone. A whimsical adventure, Rango is fun for all ages.

"Name's... Rango."

I loved this. From the clever and creative concept art to the weirdness to the humor and to the crisp animation... this is a great western. Feels weird putting this on a list of my favorite westerns, but they earned it. Makes sense that it is one of two non Disney/Pixar films of the 2010s to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was the other one). We need more films like Rango.

I have seriously mixed feelings about this film, I find the first two thirds a chore to watch. But when Bill Nighy's character appears in the third third, the film really picks up in both pace and enjoyability.

A gem of animation that completely slipped under the radar for most people. If you like Johnny Depps wierd quirky sense of humor and enjoyed his performance in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas than this is the movie for you. Despite the movie being 9 years old it still looks stunning, it manages to have a sense of styling to the characters while still being somewhat realistic, something the new complete farce of the Lion King could learn from. It's bizarre, interesting, surreal, complex and filled with subtle adult humor and if you have any interest in animation in general it needs to be watched. I stll enjoy watching today's animated movies but Rango really puts to light as to how much this genre of films has devolved over the years.

A perfectly acceptible little family adventure that won't compete with the masterpieces from Pixar or Dreamworks, but doesn't presume to in the first place. Johnny Depp brings what he does to every picture these days - an inimitable lust for life and boatloads of free-wheeling character - but the film doesn't make much effort to move beyond its status as a playground for his zealous voice work.

Rango's plot is very by-the-books, and despite several amusing nods and winks to other pictures along the way, is never quite able to shake that burr loose from the heel of its boot. For a PG kids' picture, it also pushes the envelope in several spots with an armful of violence and a dozen jokes that will sail right over a younger audience's head. Didn't really bother me, personally, but it's not something I'll be pulling out for the rugrats until they're a bit older. It's good enough, with a genuinely excellent guest appearance at its climax, but never really approaches greatness.

Love the craziness, and the animation looks so incredibly good!

Rango is western... make no mistake. But i assure you one thing should you decide to give it a chance, its what it needs to be! Its entertaining, action-packed, funny and sincere.

loading replies

Continually surprised how many people mention the references in this film without mentioning the most obvious, Chinatown.

First things first: the animation looks absolutely fantastic and the character design is awesome. Depp does another great captain Jack impression, which you either like or not. Lots of references to other movies, with the obvious ones being Fear and loathing, Pirates of the Caribbean and spaghetti westerns in general. The movie atmosphere feels very different from other animated movies, so I can only applaud the effort to shake up the genre.
But to be honest, it didn't pull me in. It tried to be too many things at once, and therefore failed at being really good at any of them. There were only a couple funny moments, the 'religious' theme was scattered and sometimes awkward, the Clint Eastwood vibe didn't go well with the funny side, the story was too simple for adults but too slow (and perhaps too dark) for kids.
Still I can recommend watching it, even if it's just for the visuals or the Clint Eastwood vibe. Just don't expect a masterpiece.

No way is this just ' a kids movie'.
Visually impressive, funny and once again a testament to depps amazing acting skills.

I'm not to sure of "for kids" quote from jenningsw22, I thought some scenes of the film were some what bizzare and at times damn wierd. My daughter certainly didn't enjoy it and found it as bemusing as did I.
If this is a kids film I would have to say it is rather dark.

A graphical masterpiece. A bit like ratatouille: Not the best movie I've seen, but a it includes decent story; It can make you laugh a couple of times and overwhelms/amazes with a lot of incredible details.
