There was a bit of hype surrounding this movie, and it's actually more a coming of age movie than a straight cannibal movie. However , there's one particular scene to make you uneasy for sure, and some others in much lesser degree (or so this horror hound speaks).. It reminded me a bit of Ginger Snaps but with another horror palette so to speak. This still means you should see this movie! Fingerlicking good....
A pleasant surprise. Great premise, strong acting and high production value... The story loses focus in the third act, but not too late to garner 9/10.
Don't believe the hype. This is not a sickly horrifying movie. It's very tame.
Two sisters veterinary students, and a vegetarian family, with cannibalistic instincts. The ironies are evident.
I wanted to attend a screening of "Grave" (now re-titled to "Raw") almost a year ago from today but it was canceled so I have been looking forward to it's regular release ever since. The general press continued to hype this up, the trailer looked quite dope and even Mondo jumped on the wagon doing the OST pressings... expectations high [✓] (check).
As one can already see by my rating they were not met at all... I was even more so offended that it got that much praise. Frankly put: the movie sucks.
I don't quite understand what it is that some people saw in this... maybe they're vegetarians or just got distracted by the shlock.
The so-so concept which consists of elements all done before is terribly under baked. The changes occurring in the main girl are not really grounded in her character but rely on music or shlock scenes to progress but even with those I feel duped. Nothing in the setting helps to support the story (and it's nonsense) and instead makes the whole thing seem even more unrealistic and distracts with some overly edgy bullshit.
As the movie progresses it just falls apart even more and looses it's focus, building towards a tonally misguided ending. It almost felt like a joke.
The only positive thing I can say that the cinematography is quite good for the most part ¯_(ツ)_/¯...
What did I just watch? What a weird but grossly entertaining film. I've never felt more disgusted and intrigued during a movie. Definitely worth a watch.
BRO WTF IS THAT WHAT DID I JUST WATCH?
love it
I liked how "Raw" makes intelligent use of the tropes of genre cinema to tell what is, above anything else, the tale of two sisters. Justine's metamorphosis can be clearly interpreted as a metaphor for coming of age, for the human being's peculiar instinct to socially "cannibalize" each other. However, it's Justine's relationship with Alexia to give the movie some kind of emotional depth. Even though I had to hide my face behind the pillow during some of the most graphic moments, the strange twists of irony here and there kept everything tolerable.
I just wish they kept things vague without spelling out everything that was going on, especially in the ending. They also went a little too heavy-handed with their cartoony characterization of the seniors and teachers.
A perfect ending for a horror movie is a rare accomplishment. This achieves it.
French Vet school. Worse school ever. LOL
Haha, what a wild ride. Supremely entertaining and totally uninhibited. I urge all stuck in the hollywood loop to venture out and be rewarded in spades.
This is a filmmaker confident in their craft, hats off to Ducournau. This film is what you make of it; it is raw (go figure), it is visceral, and it is confronting at times. Not just as a result of the images on the screen, but what you take away from those images. Boy, am I a sucker for a soundtrack, and this one was killer. I highly recommend - even if you do have a weak stomach, the full-on scenes are few and far between in my opinion. Although, I do love horror films... so I may not be the best judge.
I usually like disturbing movies like this .. but this one just didn't do it for me. I did not care for any of the characters and did not find the acting to be particularly good. The plot kept getting more and more ridiculous yet it was very illogical and didn't progress in a natural way. Like when she cut her sister's finger off the sister passed out and she didn't seem to care much. Then the sister seemed to forgive her right away and then stepped in front of a car. Am I missing something here?
Yeah, that was really gross to watch. I really thought I was going to vomit at several moments in this movie. The acting was pretty good and the atmosphere was great as well with these moments that start calm and then slowly you see what's happening and you're like what the actual fuck. The story was kinda dumb tho.
Also, what the fuck is that school. They treated those first year kids like literal garbage, I'm hoping there aren't really schools where shit this crazy happens.
Let this be a lesson to future parents. Do not raise your children to be vegetarian
It's hard to watch but I'll probably watch it again or recommend my friends to watch. It wasn't the best but pretty good. The story, the irony, the acting, the atmosphere are done well.
not english, just english subs...
What a suprise this movie was! Ok it was sick enough but Cinematography and directing was brilliant and i just loved Garance's perfomance she was amazing! Its not a movie you can rewatch for sure so pay attention in first watch..7/10!
A bizzare, disturbing and feverish horror flick that almost feels like a super villain origin story. I was really intrigued with the premise of the movie and thouroughly engaged with the protagonist's journey. The grounded take on cannibalism had me so creeped out at times i literally had to cover my eyes, which is a reaction i never get from other horror films. This movie is truly horrifying and is a must watch for anyone yearning for genuine horror, and not the same old jump scares, demonic little girls and demons that couldn't scare a baby if they tried.
most disturbing movie I've ever seen and I've seen some shit. Julia Ducournau did a great job with the film, totally loved it and the main actress performance was brilliant. A must watch if you have the stomach for some cannibalism.
Julia Ducournau’s RAW. Such an elegant film I have seen recently. Unusually poetic, rich in symbolism and highly disturbing. You could get a chance to witness the unacceptable complexity of your self and its inexplicable emotions. This is cinema, starting slow, emerging audaciously from its former forms of uneasiness, in denial of making comfort zones and gradually intensifying to the extremes of human instincts. Love this uncompromising beauty of French cinema. This is how you make films in 21st century. The meat is fresh and bloody. Now, what are you hungry for???!!!!
I thought this movie was supposed to be gross?
At first I was unsure what to think, but by the time she started eating that finger I was audibly saying: "What the fuck is this movie?" - in a good way!
Third act kinda went a little downhill, but still a great movie nonetheless.
While the story is a little undercooked at times, this is still a tasteful coming of age (cannibalistic) drama. Oh, and is it wrong I craved a bacon sandwich while watching the film? Well, I was all out of finger food, so I had little choice!!
My friend noted that since the parents knew of their kids' true nature then surely they would not have let Quicky, the dog, be killed. That's the only silver lining in this movie.
A dull foray into a girl's first year at Uni. It will probably resonate with those who had similar experiences of the strangeness, awkwardness and weirdness that is Uni life but it doesn't make a good movie. The "carnivorous" change is just sensationalism and shock value.
Intriguing coming of age story, with some twisted themes. Justine's decent into madness with her hunger and the frustration with the hazing rituals, leads to some interesting imagery. I felt shades of Cronenberg throughout, amongst others.
horror movie? Shocking? So much hype. I'm disappointed. Watch Hostel, that's a scary movie so much better
Some real good scenes in this one that will make you cringe for sure but the story is very well played out and the acting is great also. French horrors are great!!!
Grim, gross, unsettling and powerful; this metaphor-laden coming-of-age story was much better the second time round. I'm still not 100% on all the messages being sent, but what I did pick up this time resounded loud and clear. So stylistically unique, there is nothing quite like a well made French horror movie, and it's hard to believe that this was Ducournau's debut feature. Can't wait to see what she does now post-Titane.
I FINALLY got around to watching this. Let’s be clear, it’s not for everyone. It’ll surely be difficult to watch for many, impossible to watch for some. Not to mention subtitle films are not for everyone as it is. I on the other hand, loved the aesthetics to this film. It is expertly made and undeniably unique…just proceed with caution with this topic matter.
Rating: 4/5 - 85% - Would Recommend
Thaaat's why you don't force meat onto vegetarians.
I'm glad I didn't know what this was about before I watched it. I think that made it more enjoyable.
it's not a unique movie but there are some enjoyable subtext that becomes more clear as it goes on. disturbing parts are really effective and i like that too, but the mansplaining at the end....that was the most disturbing part for me.
There was a lot of buzz about this movie where people would run out of the screening needing medical attention. I didn't see anything of the sort in this movie. It was actually quite interesting. What might be interesting is the background story of the final scene.
The plot isn't that simple to understand which is why there are so many bad reviews however I do think that the movie is not as good as the hype made it out to be and I would not rewatch, I do think that I would recommend you watch it but the ending is also a bit meh and it just ends abruptly when you least expect it to as you feel as it its now starting and there is so much more to come. That's just my take on it anyway and I find it was a bit similar to neon demon as the plot is not that straightforward/easy to understand and you need to fully understand it to enjoy the movie.
weird, disgusting, grotesque, bloody amazing! one of the best and most unique movies i've ever watched
Such an interesting movie with a super bad ending. :(
The film at times seems to be making a leap of quality, but never comes to occur.
This is amazing , so visceral and beautiful.

Red band trailer was nowhere near to the whole picture, the final version. Oh boy, that's something! It disturbed and disgusted me at some points, but it could balance it with funny and gorgeous moments. Mananged to merge a coming of age with a drug addict movie, however in this case drug was substituted with flesh. And the most astonishing feature was that kept surpising me in the whole runtime, altough I expected something wierd would happen, but even weirder did every time.
