Red Christmas 2016

A welcomed addition to the holiday horror genre. Honestly I wanted to rate this lower as the majority of the film moves too slow and feels very Lifetime-y from the over dramatic performances to how the film's shot. Thankfully it does pick up towards the end. Some entertaining kills, interesting family dynamic, and some cool lighting choices about the halfway point make this home invasion slasher a blast to watch that its flaws are forgotten. The film is injected with a heavy topic such as abortion and while I may not agree with everything here, it succeeds on giving you an emotional ride. I didn't expect it to be this sad and I knew I have to give this an extra star. Overall, it's a flawed but still solid effort.

A rather poorly made horror film, Red Christmas doesn’t deliver any scares. The story follows a family celebrating Christmas in the Australian countryside that is visited by a mysterious stranger looking to settle some unfinished business. Except for Dee Wallace the acting is universally bad, and the script isn’t much better. But it’s the directing that really damns the film. The kill scenes are poorly shot and there’s no tension or suspense to them. And the special effects are terrible; particularly the creature make-up, which is downright laughable. Red Christmas is an amateurish film that doesn’t work at all.

Atrocious, stilted acting out of everyone except Dee Wallace. Dumb decisions that scream "we didn't have any directing or pacing and just sort of ran from room to room". Ridiculous effects on the level of high schoolers in their backyard with fake blood and makeup. And the message of the story is really heavy-handed. Like, we get it. We got it during the intro, and 15 minutes in when the killer showed up, and every other time an attempt at an emotional scene or conversation happened. If you like home invasion horror movies, look elsewhere.

Cool little Christmas slasher/home invasion movie. It's got a unique, nasty story and Dee Wallace's sincerity really brings more weight to the whole thing.
