A very interesting and compelling story that is conveyed by a very poorly written script.
It polarises between melodrama with the victimisation of Jewell and his mother and the slutty journalist that sleeps her way to a first page story (for which there is no evidence) and the over zealous FBI agents that will go to any length to convict Jewell (which is not how it went down at all).
So between the shock value (that's made up) and the melodrama there isn't enough to turn a great story into a great film.
It was ok.
Not one of Eastwood's best directorial ventures.
Intensely moving, and yet another reminder of the abuses of power within the justice system. A good yet sad film, but thank goodness for the many people like Richard Jewell, striving to make a difference in support of the protection of others.
I had no idea about the case so the approach and the story telling was ok. It felt way to dragged long and very stupid as evidence and approach from the FBI. It was all a big charade. Hauser was magnificent and i do not believe the movie will be watchable without him.
Great film by Clint Eastwood highlighting the social injustices of society. True story of Richard Jewell who discover the bomb during the Olympics in Atlanta. Later he was accused of being the bomber. This story is about the downward spiral of a hero unjustly accused of a crime and the crucifixion in the media. Great performances. A great watch.
Great movie and thrillingly underrated, great acting and directing, I don't know why it's not nominated for acting and directing in Oscars! Totally recommended
I've been an Eastwood fan for basically my entire movie watching life. Ever since I've saw him in one of the Dollar western. If he's playing or directing - it's a reason for me to watch it. However his last directing credits were literally hit and miss the last youple of years.
Amerian Sniper (miss), Sully (hit), 15:17 to Paris (miss), The Mule (hit). And now Richard Jewell is somewhere in between but leaning more towards missing, again, for different reasons.
I knew nothing about the person or how he's been treated at the time. So I had really no idea what was going to happen in this movie. While I'm not surprised at how the story unfolds I have to say that Eastwood did not manage to invoke real sympathy for the man in me. The whole thing pretty much plays like you would expect it to. Jewell is the hero.
After I watched the movie I read about the controversy surrounding the portrayal of Kathy Scruggs. I know movies are taking artistic freedoms when it comes to the portrayal of characters but I think they went below the line here. Especially considering that she is dead. That made me read up a little more. I don't want to excuse what has been done to Jewell by the FBI and the media, and how terrible it must have been for him. But I found it interesting that the movie neglected to mention that the Attorney General formally apologized and that Jewell got a 500.000 $ settlement from NBC. Others settled, too, but I don't know for what.
I think it is really important to tell stories like this. But adding or leaving stuff out are intentional decisions on part of the writer and/or director and I really ask myself: why ? If you make a movie based on a real event, stick to the fact. Don't add or leave things out. Because if you do I really question your motive and your agenda.
It's nice that this hero gets his name cleared, even if it is after some over-the-top melodrama and a film directed by an ultra conservative asshole (but hey, if Sam Rockwell, Olivia Wilde and Kathy Bates are willing to sell their souls for a paycheck, I'm willing to sell mine for a movie ticket).
Drags a little bit on the end.But it's a pretty well thing for a movie. As someone unaware of this incident,It was intense for me
Yet another terrific movie from Clint Eastwood - he's a much better director than actor. All the actors played their part well and the story flows without getting bogged down. 10/10
This is an excellent film from Clint Eastwood!
Firstly, what a terrific performance from Paul Walter Hauser! He plays lead perfectly, as he makes it impossible not to root for the titular character - which is admittedly a given due to the plot, but Hauser adds an extra level of believability to proceedings. I felt every intended emotion.
Sam Rockwell does very good behind Hauser, as do Kathy Bates and Olivia Wilde. Jon Hamm is good, too, as he returns to an Eastwood flick, having made his film debut in the latter's 'Space Cowboys' nineteen years prior.
Portraying a messed up true event, 'Richard Jewell' is a film that I'd most definitely suggest you check out. 9/10 from me.

Another great film from Mr. Eastwood. Don’t care about his politics, don’t care about the accuracy of this story. It’s a entertaining film. Acting was superb, Paul Walter Hauser, Sam Rockwell and the always excellent Kathy Bates are just amazing.

Really enjoyed this one, Paul Walter Hauser carries the whole movie. What a great performer!
Once again, Clint Eastwood delivers a masterful directing performance, weaving together a complex and emotional narrative with precision. The film does an excellent job of portraying the events as we know them, offering a compelling look at the investigation, media frenzy, and legal battles that followed the bombing. The acting is excellent, with each actor delivering a convincing and compelling performance that draws you into the story.
Finally a movie with Sam Rockwell where I could for a moment forget he was in Green Mile. Was an interesting story though I don’t
actually remember it occurring.
Great acting but I didn't feel that drama about fat people. It was the drama of how the FBI generates people guilty at no sense whether they fat or not.
The FBI and the media are not very well portrayed in this story where the protagonist, luckily, in the end was not as stupid as he seemed.
From director Clint Eastwood comes the tragic, true story Richard Jewell. After security guard Richard Jewell discovers a bomb in Centennial Park during the 1996 Summer Olympics and helps save people from the explosion he’s praised as a hero, but the FBI soon targets him as the bomber, despite having no evident, and destroys his life. Featuring Sam Rockwell, Jon Hamm, Olivia Wilde, Kathy Bates, and Paul Walter Hauser, the film has a strong cast that delivers some excellent (and award winning) performances. And Eastwood does an impressive job at heightening the tension and suspense as the FBI closes in on Jewell, entrapping him. Incredibly powerful, Richard Jewell is a cautionary tale of how easily an innocent man’s life can be ruined by reckless and irresponsible journalists and law enforcement officers.
Total Respect for Richard Jewell and his family but -- "This a weird little movie" It's like you have all the ingredients but you got the recipe from a phony website so the end result is inedible. (ingredients : actors ; recipe : script and direction ; inedible : movie)
It's exactly what you expect. It felt a little too long. Paul Walter Hauser and Sam Rockwell were pretty good. Olivia Wilde's character felt weird.

"Paul Walter Hauser commands the screen."
