Ring 1998

For me this still is one of the best horror movies around.

Really very astonishingly good horror. More subtle than the American version. I like both pretty equally.

It's hard for me to understand why this movie ever became popular, but I say this being over two decades removed from its debut and with the benefit of having seen the vastly superior Verbinski version. The script is a muddy, confusing mess. Anywhere the characters can't be bothered to take initiative, psychic powers are there to propel the plot forward. Sadako herself doesn't have the same effect.

I’m sure all horror fans have seen the American version; The Ring. However, despite how similar in storyline, they are also quite different.

I expected this to be far scarier, but for me it wasn’t.

Considering when it was made, it’s a high budget film with a great cast.

It’s slower than the American version, which didn’t bother me at all.

I enjoyed it, but I can’t really say which version I prefer as they both have their own merits.

This version is more authentic I suppose and well told without the use of a lot of background music to build suspense, unnecessary jump scares or special effects. It’s in a way more basic, as in a well told story.

I like both versions, I honestly don’t have a preference.

Looking forward to watching the others in the series.

To be honest! The American version was better. You could say they fixed it! But then again, they had bigger budget!

Ringu deserves praise for its original ideas but falls to its American counterpart. It lacks the atmosphere and creepiness the story needs to be effective. The writing also takes the easy path of making difficult and obscure situations easily understood by characters in order to move the story alone.

After the TV movie from 1995 already demonstrated the potential of the story, the first theatrical adaptation of the novel "The Ring" by Kōji Suzuki is able to fully realize it. In contrast to the first work, this one succeeds in maintaining the tension throughout. Nanako Matsushima and Sanada Hiroyuki work very well as the two leads. And the changes from the original also make for more interesting character dynamics. However, the film suffers from some pacing issues, and the horror also comes up a bit short for my taste. The only real shock moment is the iconic finale, but that makes up for a lot. I don't see "Ring" as a masterpiece, but it's a pretty good film that still works very well today.

One of the best movies I've seen ever! One of the most nerve racking ones too! Great atmosphere and soundtrack and the sound effects when the day appears is goated and incredibly soothing but creepy at the same time. The ending song is awesome too as most J-Pop/Japanese music is. All the Ring movies are free on tubi so you know damn well Imma watch them all before the year is out!

I like the American version slightly better than this. Sadako is not as creepy here, although the TV scene still carries some impact. This probably faltered a bit for me because I had seen "The Ring" a number of times before and none of what happens here came as any sort of surprise. That may keep it from getting a fair shake, but it was still enjoyable.

I don't get what so great about this movie! The movie never explained why the movie was called "The Ring". It never explained why the man had all the freaking answer except for at the end. How were we supposed to know that he was psychic? The movie was boring and it wasn't scary at all. The faces weren't scary and pathetic. Pathetic movie. I'm sorry all of you who liked it. But the American version is SO much better. Because in that one, you at least get some freaking answers.
