Somehow I hadn't seen this until last weekend. I should not have waited this long, because this is a great film. Mia Farrow is great in this, and you really feel like you're in her shoes the whole way. Great cinematography as well. The shots down the hall of people on the phone are wonderful. You fell like the character, trying to peak around the corner and understand what is happening.
So that is all I can talk about without spoilers. Stop now if you haven't seen it.
If I had only seen half of this, I'd have been pretty disappointed. Some of the acting is bad, plot holes are jumping out, the story arc is predictable, etc. And then I get to the end and every single thing leading to this was perfect.
That bad acting was bad acting by the character, not the actor. You realize that everyone around her that is in on the Satanism is faking what they want Rosemary to think. The people not in on this are acting well. Her friends comfort her and seem real because they actually tell her the truth of what they think.
I love the fact that when you're going through it, you're wondering if she is crazy or if this is real. I wasn't sure how it would end, but close to the last scene I thought she'd grab that antichrist and dive out a window. I suppose that is still a possibility, but the film just cuts out beforehand. Instead of deciding for you, it is up to the viewer to predict what side she's on going forward.
I thought I'd give a 4.5 at first, but then the more I thought the more I realized that I really wanted to watch again to learn more about everything. That is absolutely a 5.
I watched this movie because mother! had a poster that parodied this. I should not of waited so long to watch this. Fantastic movie with a great performance by Mia Farrow. I'm not a huge fan of the horror genre but this is a great example of how to make a movie scary without any jump scares or any other tricks. Its just very creepy and makes you uneasy. You never know exactly what is going on.
I appreciated Rosemary's Baby a lot more on this revisit. I loved the introduction of the characters and setting up the suspense within the first 20 minutes. Then it becomes a movie of a bunch of horrible people gaslighting a poor woman.
Liked everything except the ending. A 8/10 from me:white_check_mark:
"Rosemary's Baby" is a film that is unsettling in the distance it keeps between Rosemary, and those that she believes love her. Satanic terrors aside, it really tells the tale of a woman alienated from her friends, husband, and even her newborn. It's devastatingly depressing not because of its downbeat and off-kilter conclusion, but due to the total separation of Mother and Child.
The film is moody and disturbing but not horrific. The characters are unforgettable and the acting is superb. However, it also plays campy and ends on a rather silly note. The "Hail Satan!" cheers are as giggle-inducing now as they were chilling to theater goers in the late 60's.
I done been hearing about this devil baby demon seed movie since I was a young-un. Heck I was afraid to watch it till now, but I tell ya all this thing wasn’t no more scarier than a night in the outhouse in August after eating a mess of grandma’s greasy taters, if you know what I mean. I tell you I know it was writ back before all the fancy pants special effects & what not, but come on. We never even got to see the dang old baby. I can’t figure that out I mean it’s a movie about a devil demon baby monster thing & we never get to see the devil demon baby monster thing. I want to see the devil demon baby monster thing! Even if it’s just some kind of mutated claw, like in Alien where something sticks out a dripping with gooey oozey smoozy stuff all eating through the floor like some kind of creepy extraterrestrial acid blood stuff. That would be super cool & stuff, but no. All we got was old acting from old people doing an old movie, it was all just too, well, OLD. It was a pretty good story & stuff, so I guess that’s not too bad.
That’s about it.
I didn't care for it when I was a teenager but now I see what a masterpiece it is. People who expect jump scares or gore every 10 minutes (which were the only kind of horror movies I knew back then) will be disappointed.
I can now empathize with Mia's character after seeing how she's being gaslighted.
Rosemary's Baby is a work of sheer brilliance that left me in complete awe. The music, the direction, the cast, and the atmosphere is everything that some modern horror should take notes on.
Roman Polanski is a master of his craft and he perfectly builds up the tension in every scene that makes the mystery even more engaging, as you the audience get interested in what's going on like Mia Farrow character. Speaking of Mia Farrow, shes pretty damn amazing in this and one of her best performance I've seen from her. The same goes to the rest of the cast, especially John Cassavetes and Ruth Gordon.
The movie is a slow burn, but the pay off is satisfying and I always like that in movies when everything adds up to the end. You Know what, I'm kinda disappointed that I didn't watch this sooner, but thankfully I did, even at this time.
Better than Tenant or Repulsion, but a slow roll movie with no scares and really light horror
Best poster of all time? I just love it so much. The rock landscape making a silhouette of a pregnant woman and the two title words joining to show "Rosemary's" attachment to her "Baby". And the fade face is so perfect urgh. So glad it didn't go for a 'satanic' red and black visual too, that would've been corny - instead it goes for a murky green that's not even in the movie. It's so aesthetic to look at, but also iconic as hell.
And yes, still one of the best films ever made.
Good film that burns too slow for my taste.
Love the transitions into the dream sequences. Got so bad at the husband starting from the middle lol
First watch for me I know this is a big time classic but i'm quite disappointed. It has everything going for it the acting, cinematography and the psychological horror elements are top notch... but it's as though the movie is missing a climax you're just waiting for something to finally happen but then it's just the credits.
NO JUST NO
I MUCH PREFER THE MODERN TV SHOW
MUCH BETTER ACTING AND A WAY MORE INTERESTING STORY TOLD. THIS WAS JUST PLAIN BAD AND BORING
Story: 10
Script: 8

Overall: 8
This is another example of a pseudo-intellectual art-house experiment that has gone tragically wrong. Words cannot describe how awful the fillm is...
"Rosemary's Baby" works the opposite way of "Repulsion". While the source of Carol's paranoia came from the inside, Rosemary's struggle comes from the influence of the outside. She is first introduced as some kind of unreliable narrator, to the point that we are never sure if what we are watching is actually happening or not. The real surprise is that, for once, it didn't just happen inside Rosemary's head: the evil is actually residing next door, lurking beneath the respectable middle-class.
It's an interesting film with a peculiar mood, but I never found it even remotely scary or unsettling. I particularly liked the sarcastic dialogues between the couple and all the little details that can be discovered on a rewatch.
Masterpiece. Very unsettling. It successfully builds nearly incredible tension. Amazing acting and cinematography.
An all-timer, obviously. Fires on all cylinders.
A Long Old Classic Flick. Man How The Times Have Changed
Over rated, was hoping for so much more after all the build up.
Slow but well crafted movie. The tension builds exponentially from the start. Pretty creepy by the end. I liked the ending but personally I'd liked to know what happens next. Mia was both exellent and occasionally bad, but I think she did a good job overall. Everyone else were good.
8.5/10 absoulutely fantastic movie with great blow mind script and well made!
Good at growing tension and making you uneasy/creeped out, but damn that hail satan ending was shit. It would have been great if she was just a crazy bitch and they were all normal folks trying to help her.
Brilliant horror movie. It's subtle and original, it doesn't matter if you watch it now, it has aged gracefully
i can see how i predict what is going next in every scene.the ending bother me.
I thank my teacher for showing us this, its weird but seems to be what my brain enjoys!
Can be defined in one word: disturbing.
I love Mia Farrow.

it's really good! I never read any particularity about the story so it did surprise me! By the end of the film I was extremely frustrated.. and goddammit how I hate Rosemary husband..
My only hope she went on a killing spree following the end of the movie.. she got reasons to kill all them bastards.
