This should cool off the Rambo wannabes. The opening beach assault sequences were the most violent, realistic, and upsetting filming I've ever seen; looked as though the thing was actual combat footage. The shushing noises of rounds cutting through the air was the most chilling part of all. Perfect portrayal of the insane stupidity of war and the anguish of all who enter this most foolish of enterprises. A must see.

Why does Stephen Spielberg seem so pandering and inattentive as a director-- Until the moment he begins filming a World War II film? The Ulysses of Spielberg's career is, unequivocally, either Schindler's List or Saving Private Ryan. And with production credits on such landmarks of the genre as Flags of Our Fathers (and its sister project, Letters from Iwo Jima), Empire of the Sun, and Band of Brothers, he has put together a weightier artistic portfolio in WW2 movies than even in his other wheelhouse of box-office-conscious action thrillers.
