Saw II 2005

Could have been a decent horror flick if it hadn't been populated with a bunch of totally unbelievable, illogical assholes.

"Saw II" is less exciting than its predecessor. But it is also a big step in the direction that the Saw films became known for in the end. Namely, a larger group of people is locked in some kind of escape room, which they can only leave if they survive a series of brutal traps. As always, an investigation plot runs in parallel, with the police trying to get to the killer. That all works pretty well here, too, as there are a few nice traps, and the typical Saw twist at the end also works. Tobin Bell is given some real time as John Kramer for the first time and does a good job. The rest of the cast is rather average, though. I also sometimes noticed that the script wasn't really meant for the series. All in all, the film is perhaps a little less gross than you'd expect from Saw. At the same time, director Darren Lynn Bousman doesn't quite manage to maintain the thrilling atmosphere of the first part. Overall, though, it's all still pretty solid.

Sequels always want to one-up the previous movie and this is no exception. A house instead of a room, they amped up the cinematography and it feels soooo edgy. I liked the twist though!

This movie is awesome, is one of the best gore movies of all time and one of the best of this franchise.

Saw II is by no means a bad film, but the cracks had definitely began to show for the series.

The plot this time around is not as strong as the first, but is still interesting and fairly different from how Saw I sets itself up. We get a much better picture of who Jigsaw is, and its the first of a strong set of performances from Tobin Bell. Again the focus isnt really on gore and shock, not yet anyway.

This film does start an annoying trend of having absolutely clueless and annoying characters. Some of them act so irrationally and it makes you wanna shout through the screen at them. Again, I am not a fan of the editing nor the cinematography and I have a feeling it only gets worse in the coming films.

Could've been worse I suppose. Not bad... maybe a bit meh. 6/10.

For starters, it’s would be nearly impossible for sequel to trump what happened in the first film. But this reinvention, or next incarnation of the formula is absolutely nailed. The whole pacing and vibe was changed to a nearly perfect adaptation. Still the second best film of the franchise for a multitude of reasons.

The needle-pit scene is still so nerve-wrecking to watch! It is one of the nastiest traps in the SAW franchise. So well made.

Anyway, Saw II has more, much more Tobin Bell which is epic! We expand on the backstory of why John Kramer became Jigsaw. We get a clever plot twist at the end. We get an angry Donnie Wahlberg, more gore, we see corpses from the first SAW, we got some more clever clues for the traps and we get a survivor out of the first SAW film in Amanda which is greatly played again by Shawnee Smith.

SAW II is still a film I like to watch but the horror is gone that we had in the first one. It's gore and style first and horror after. It is still entertaining but the horror should've come first in my book.

In the end, it's a good sequel and worth a watch.

Giving it a re-watch for my 31 Days Of Horror. It's been years since we originally watched these.

The perfect movie to make your heart flutter! Terror and fear are omnipresent. It is a very unpredictable film with an exceptional ending!

When the series decides it’s going to be true schlock and doubles down on the over the top editing and frenetic bloodlust that detaches it from reality and instead puts it in the realm of nu metal music video. When Xavier starts cutting off the back of his neck, I laughed because of the wild cuts and Amanda’s overacting, and kf only added to the enjoyment. Kramer is full of shit, his philosophy just an excuse to vent his issues and get the thrill of the kill, and two movies in Saw is much the same. It pretends to say something on a very surface and obligatory level, but it’s just here to be gorey fun. So far, that’s enough.

Like the second scoop of blood and guts ice cream, this was just as tasty as the first though less original than the initial bite.

I probably liked everything you hated (the torture porn, the gimmicks, the twist...) but still am amazed what people will do to themselves and each other just to keep sucking breath on this planet. I think I'd reach a "Nuh-uh, death is far preferable to this shit," way faster than the characters in this movie.

I'm surprised this one is rated so much lower than the first. I find it better. The writers have found their footing on what they want the franchise to be, creating a genuinely interesting crime thriller, just with loads of more gore than the previous. Tobin Bell makes for an excellent character, without having to overact like other villains in the genre, but it's the twist and story that's unexpectedly fantastic. One of the better written scripts for a horror film, every element comes back in some way. This is a classic I keep coming back to every so often, the characters are fascinating to watch. The score by Charlie Clouser is chilling and classic, completing the haunting tone. On top of which, I love the color palette of dark greens David A. Armstrong and Darren Lynn Bousman chose for this one. Each film seems to have it's own colors. The first had a blue and white scheme, the third a more brown and orange, the fourth and blue and red, and so on. It's oddly deliciously appetizing, in it's dirtiness. If you somehow haven't checked this out, you should. It's much more than what you would expect.

Gruesome and ultraviolent, Saw II takes the series into torture porn territory. This time criminal mastermind Jigsaw has trapped 8 people inside of a house and exposed them to a deadly nerve gas, and to get the antidote each of them must complete a task that’s been specifically designed for them. Starring Donnie Wahlberg, Shawnee Smith, and Tobin Bell, the casting is pretty good. However, the characters aren’t that likable or sympathetic; which is probably intentional as Jigsaw has been rewritten as an antihero who’s punishing wicked people for their wrongdoings. Yet as gratuitous as the violence is, there’s a strange morbid fascination to the traps. And, director Darren Lynn Bousman does a great job at building suspense. Though Saw II goes more for exploitation than horror, it still delivers plenty of frightening thrills.

The cast of characters are all terrible and not utilized in an effective or well-written way at all. The actual overall plot/layout of this sequel is excellent, but is squandered over what amounts to terrible character writing.
