Season of the Witch 2011

I'm not in a position to defend the fact that I liked watching the notoriously panned "Season of the Witch". The story is very simple, the silliness of the dialogue is at times embarrassing, and the whole movie does nothing that hasn't been done better a million times before. But dammit, I had a good time that I think stems from the pairing of the unpredictable Nicholas Cage and the overall badass-ery of Ron Perlman.

It took me a while to get over the fact that Crusaders would never use the language that they do, but the pair has a chemistry that evolved over the course of the movie.

The villainous force that the heroes must fight seemed formidable, even though this whole affair is loaded with spotty CGI effects that took away from whatever realism could be generated. In short, this movie is a cartoon. But hey! Cartoons are fun!

Season of the Witch is a dark, supernatural thriller that’s full of suspense. The story follows two knights who are enlisted to escort a young woman accused of being a witch to a monastery to receive judgment, but along the journey they begin to suspect that the girl is not what she seems. Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman lead the cast and have good chemistry as battle-worn compatriots, and Claire Foy delivers a solid performance as the “witch.” Additionally, the story is fairly well-written and takes some clever turns that are unconventional. But there are a few elements of the film that don’t work (such as the CGI), and it takes a while to get to the main plot. Crusade films often get bogged down in clichés, but Season of the Witch has a few angles to it that make it refreshingly different and entertaining.

Honestly, there isn't really much good to say about this movie. In whole it seems like they took several movies and stitched them together to put out some medieval-action-mystery-horror-flick, using low-budget style fx, bad cgi and a rather clumsy story, topped by some nasty goofs and plot holes so big you can drive the Nimitz through.

Want an example? In the beginning they sail to the coast of Styria - guess what? Yes, Styria never had (and still hasn't) a coastline at all since Austria is a landlocked country. The whole movie gives one the impression that they worked over this so often that in the end, nobody could remember what it was about and they simply decided to give it a quick end (which is really a b-movie style ending with the overdone standard cgi fx you can see in nearly every b-rated horror movie) to get it over with.

If you're into decent medieval mystery stuff or medieval action, stick with The Name of the Rose or Kingdom of Heavens if you must. ;)

Is there a correlation between Nicholas Cage, his money problems and the quality of his movies. He's a great, yet very desperate, actor.

Cage and Perlman buddy movie. Poor movie, but the ending was better than the first 80 minutes of movie :)

4/10

Great cast, so-so story wise, but the dialogue is absolutely tripe!!!

Fairly awful. Script was average, direction was heavy handed and Nicholas Cage pulled his tired "mournful" from his handful of acting tricks. The only thing to enjoy was Ron Perlman who afterwards must have stared at his paycheck while gargling the bad taste from his mouth.
In fact the best part was the closing credits because I've never seen so many omlauts in one place.

Better than movies of the woke era.

Season of the Witch is a very entertaining adventure movie. Yeah, that's right, adventure. It has elements of horror - especially in the third act - landing this as more Lord of the Rings, with a dash of Army of Darkness.
The movie is surprisingly well made, with most of the heavy lifting done by Cage, and Perlman. And, wow, talk about two pros who knew what they were working with, and how to make it believable.
Oddly enough, the only real flaw here is that there needed to be more. The film felt rushed. I absolutely could have used half an hour more with Cage, and Perlman just talking.
Ghost Rider, and Hellboy transport a witch... groovy!

"We're going to need more holy water."

A movie staring Nicolas Cage, Ron Perlman and Stephen Graham with a tiny role for legend Christopher Lee can never be boring right? Well this one freaking is. Up until the way that Perlman dies I totally blacked out that I actually had seen this in the cinema. Yes. I totally forgot until the final 10 minutes.

Season of the Witch is about transporting a "witch" from point A to B at superspeed along the way you have wolves, a dangerous bridge, fog and the final fight. Before all this we get to know our two Crusaders in Cage and Perlman.

That is basically it. So is it worth a watch? If you love Nicolas Cage maybe because it's only 90 minutes before the credits role and because of how bad he is. Not over the top lovable bad Cage but just bad. So truly consider this before watching this.

"My vow is to God. Not the men who murder in His name."

I was fully prepared to give this a 2 rating, but it had some moments where I thought "Oh ok, they were actually trying here." Don't get me wrong, it is still bad, but Ron Perlman and Nic Cage are good together.

Well, this is generic Cage's movie.

I need to stop watching Nicholas Cage films, I’m forever disappointed.

Barely watchable, very forgettable. Must me the money Cage desperatly needed to keep his mansions. And what about those incredibly dorky helmets. Since this movie is not about authenticity at least make them look cool.

And the rating is pretty strange too, pretty graphic stuff for a minor (pg13)
