just something that made me freaking angry: THEY JUST UNNECESSARiLY KILLED MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS FROM THE ENTIRE SHOW. freaking Wash and Shepard Book. frak!
Too few and very far between, really good Science Fiction is hard to come by these days. Thank God we have people like Josh Whedon who not only delivered one of my all time favorite TV-series but also gave us Serenity...one of my favorite movies of the last couple of decades.
The whole setting (Space Western if you can believe it), the music, the characters, the story, are almost perfect. I sure can't think of another movie that keeps me so engaged rewatch after rewatch.
If you haven't seen it...take my word for it...you have missed something. Most people that enjoy good storytelling will like this one even if they don't particularly enjoy sci-fi.
Did I mention I love this movie?!!?
This movies sans "big name stars" and "massive hype" is 1 of the 10 best sci-fi films I've evr seen. I love the subtle intensity that hyperventilates with each act of violence or epiphany.
I watched this way back when solely because I thought it might contain some visual fireworks. I was not disappointed because the CGI was among the best I'd seen at that time. The outer space shots of ships and space battles was nearly breathtaking. The actual story and characters though, were pretty run-of-the-mill. Specifically, the character River. How come no one just shoots her from a distance instead of facing up with her; waiting for her to lay waste to them Bruce-Lee-style?
Captain Mal was an interesting character but nothing original. After seeing this movie, I read some rave reviews that bordered on "Greatest Movie Ever" praise. I must have missed something. It was good, but certainly not great.
This was a consolation prize for those who loved the FIREFLY TV series and mourned it's untimely demise due to gross mishandling by the network. Great movie. Would have been better as a TV series. But, I'm grateful to see at least some recompense paid to the fans. The additions to the cast were top notch. The CGI was good. The writing was superb. EPIC fight scene(s) with RIver. As this is at least the third time I've watched it (I own both a digital and DVD copy), you can understand that I would rate it 10 (superb) out of 10. [Space Western]
I'm of the opinion that Firefly was a bit over-rated. Not bad, but my opinion on it wasn't fantastic. In that context, the movie felt like a bit of a downgrade.
The following are some nitpicks I had about the characters and some of the plots.
River's big reveal feels too quick. I get that it's because it's probably something they'd had in mind for a long time and needed to squeeze into a single movie, but that doesn't make it any less jarring.
Easily the most disappointing part of the movie. Malcolm completely flips on Simon. He was part of the crew by the end of Firefly. Suddenly he's not; him and his sister are a burden that he wants to toss out.
I know Jayne's a generally immoral character, but he appears to have completely gotten over his guilt for putting River and Simon in the situation he did. I wouldn't expect him to outright try to abduct (and maybe kill?) River. That scene also just sort of ends and everyone forgets about it after Malcolm finds River and she shows them what she wanted to.
I'm a bit disappointed that once again Shepherd turned into a victim as a plot device to make the crew angry, this time permanently, and it seems like his ties to the Alliance are to be left a perpetual mystery. It's also disappointing that he was no longer an active crew member.
Again, probably a result of it being crammed into a movie, but the Reavers lost a lot of their mystery and fear aspects with how quickly they became prevalent. They were more or less what I expected, but I think they served better as boogey-men.
The movie got a lot of the feel of Firefly right, but the above make it feel a little too far off for my tastes, and so I do think it was a lesser experience. I'm sure I'm in the majority thinking I would have preferred more Firefly seasons.
I don't know the series this film was based on, but it turned out to be quite entertaining, the space ships and space battles were quite impressive and the whole story was rather engrossing, also the characters were interesting and not one-dimensional. I am not much into sci-fi and prefer fantasy, but on the whole I enjoyed the film, though certainly people familiar with the original TV show can get much more out of it. From what I understand about it, the film is some kind of iconic movie for science fiction fans, so I am glad that I am now familiar with it. Some sequences were reminiscent of "Doctor Who" or it might have been the other way round.
Sadly when people reference Whedon's previous work they say either (pre-Avengers) Buffy or Angel or both hardly does Firefly gets dropped. Serenity is a continuation of that television show which was a diamond in the rough. Even though this film was based off a television show that only ran 11 episodes on FOX before it was pulled, Serenity is actually a decent entertaining film that can rival most other Sci-Fi films out there. This film was humorous and thrilling at the same time. The plot of the film which helped tie lose ends of the television series was original and entertaining to follow and the cast were all excellent. Fillion is the best!
What the hell was this psuedoHorror-SuicideSquad-StarBattle-ZombieApocalypse thing.
Almost none of the original "Firefly feeling" was kept.
I get that it was a wrapping up movie but man: the doc loses all his sweetness, River fully morphs into what she was turned into, no jokes, no camraderie, (almost) no Preacher, no Zoe-Wash / Kaylee-Doc / Inara-Mal moments, no Jayne goofing around..
Same names but basically the dark Serenity crew cousins.
I'll treasure my Firefly memories and leave it at that.
p.s. Kaylee gearing it up to survive and stay with Simone, glad I saw that
Play director and think of a midpoint between quiet anxiety of the cult classic "Forbidden Planet (1956) and the driving rage of "Aliens" with Sigourney Weaver. Voila! Easily one of the 5 best sci-fi of all time.
I watched Serenity before firefly. thought Serenity was amazing. watched firefly later and loved it which made me love this movie even more. just watched this movie for the 5th or 6th time 10 years after originally watching it and still love it the same. such a good movie. you serenity/firefly haters(few as they are) take it somewhere else because these reviews read like a fan page and you're bringin down my nostalgia for this franchise. Joss Whedon Rules!!!!!!!
I watched this movie based on the good reviews. I was really disapointed.
The characters/story are simple and you can guess the end from the beginning of the movie...
Don't care if I haven't watched the TV Series. This one was good!
Better than the show. The show waltzed around way too much talking about stupid bullshit and I honestly didn't even like a majority of the characters in the show. The movie format forced Whedon to condense the story down to a more interesting format with no unnecessary crap thrown in for the purpose of expanding the time and it didn't allow for him to showcase his unlikeable characters as much as he would like to.
"So no more running. I aim to misbehave."
Literal chills. Can't explain. I think this movie is a worthy wrap-up after Firefly. I know only one person who has seen this and didn't watch the show - my father. He didn't fall asleep watching this, which is a high praise. He's having a beer with Wash and Book right about now.
"I am a leaf on the wind. Watch how I soar."
"Take my love, take my land
Take me where I cannot stand
I don't care cause I'm still free
You can't take the sky from me."
- Firefly theme song and official mission statement.
Serenity is the definition of "Space Western" and a fitting end to the beloved Firefly series. This is a film for the true dystopian Sci-Fi lover, for fans of rogue space shows like Farscape, Cowboy Bebop, Battlestar Galactica, Andromeda and Dune. It's about survival and heart and found family, and about holding some damage but staying upright and flying anyway.
"I am a leaf on the wind! Watch how I soar."
Its sad, that a show which won multiple emmys got the axe after season 1 and they had to cram this into 2h.
The show and movie has 3 of my favourite actresses (Baccarin, State and Glau) in it (Torres is ok, but I neither love nor hate her)
Hard to believe this is 15 years old. It’s time for more, finally. Though, Whedon enjoys killing characters too much. Some deaths in this were unnecessary.
what with the high score, this show is boring............
I watched this after not seeing it for a few years and it still holds up as a good sci-fi movie, I wonder if I will enjoy the series as much...
Simply the best science fiction movie of all time. Excellent cast, plot, scenery, action. There is not a flaw in this movie. The series was just as good, but got canceled far before the end of the story. This movie really doesn't give the series the conclusion that it deserved, but it really set the bar high for this particular genre.
10 years before copycat seem not much change.
This movie-spinoff of the discontinued series "Firefly" has really surprised me: it is fast paced, has a unique kind of humor and doesn't use the action elements to excessively!
Additionally it features a great story and even after the 2nd watch I still think it's one of the best movies I ever saw!
All in all a very nice flick and on par with the great Firefly series!
Wow, i am speechless, but so much to say, hahaha, wow, after binging through the tv show Firefly i now come to this, and i feel very much satisfied by the end, this film resolves the main lingering plot thread left on from the Firefly tv show, that tv show was cancelled much too soon, and only had 14 episodes, due to the amount of fan support, we now have this movie, a great continuation/sequel to the show, we see throughout, some of the usual character traits of the characters although...to be honest, some of the actions/motivations at the beginning (mainly janyne) was a little out of character, but i have to keep in mind, this movie was made about 2-3 years after the show, it is not like the josh/creators/writers binged the show then made the movie so basically it is understandable some things are out of place, but i still thought it was all handled adequately, but this movie was not about the characters mostly, it was about the plot, to resolve the plot, and it was great all i can say, and by the end everything was really satisfied and most things was basically resolved, of course they could finish/add everything but they did a fantastic job in just 1 movie, it was nice seeing the characters again and he character of river was fleshed out greatly (and is part of the plot obviously) , and the actress was much much better than in the tv show, she was great. Again, great visual effects, nice action sequences, great enhancement of the firefly universe/lore, all in all, a very satisfying experience.
I love this movie and loved the show..
Someone explain to me why suddenly someone speaks in Chinese. What is... the consequence of globalization?
The best loved it didn't even have to have watched the series although it helped 20/10 if I could.
Only there to fill in what the tv show couldn't do after it ended... Not good stand alone
i love u summer glau!!!
awesome movie, feels kinda like 'mass effect 2' in terms of storyline and plot, worth watching if you seen Firefly (the TV Show, and i recommend you to do so). awesome CGI, space fights and everything. 8.5/10 (the post above (with spoilers) explains why i don't give a higher rating)
This movie stinks, cause its the $h!+
This film completes one of the best science fiction shows of the past ten (or twenty) years; Firefly. For some reason the show got cancelled and they had to resort to a movie to wrap up the story. This movie does a great job at that: all the unfolding storylines, character developments and mysteries that were introduced in the show are explored and explained to a very satisfying ending. The only complaint I have is that it would have been so much more fun to have seen it all unfold in a few more tv-show seasons instead of just one movie..
Firefly+Serenity is one of the best things I've ever watched!
My recommendation: go watch Firefly (even non-scifi people can enjoy it) after that you're going to want to see Serenity and you'll love it even more!
Agreed. Except for the brother and sister and the reavers this movie does not explain much. Its better to see the tv show first to understand why the crew does things the way they do.
Don't bother watching this unless you've seen the TV series, you'll just ruin one of the top 5 SciFi TV Series you could have watched.
Awesome movie! Without any doubt one of my favorites.

Whats not to love, catchup with the crew of the Firefly class ship 'Serenity' 3 years after the the now much loved TV show ended. Follow this rag-tag, loveable crew on a new adventure set directly after the events of Episode 14 'Objects in Space'. The script itself is based on ideas that were orginally planned for Season 2 (which of course never happened) instead the film now sets to answer all the unanswered questions, fans had from the first season and what can I say, Joss Whedon has done another magnifcent job and Serenity makes you realise how much you loved Firefly. Watch, enjoy and fall in love with the characters and Serenity herself.
