Shanghai Express 1932

"Shanghai Lilly"--honestly, what a great fucking name for a character. Dietrich here turns in one of my favorite performances of the era--that shot of her that they use for the Criterion cover is truly breathtaking. The movie is great fun throughout, with many colorful characters populating the train in a way that reminded me just slightly of Casablanca. The love story that develops is a skosh melodramatic, but I can't complain too much. This was great.

The Oscar for Best Cinematography is well earned. Plenty of absolutely stunning shots and very effective camera work. Deitrich, too, is stunning, though the script and some of the supporting performances leave a bit to be desired.
